Hello Margo My maternal grandparents came from Glasgow and I remember as a child listening in amazment to my grandmother telling my sister and me how they had to attend school on Christmas day. However they did not have school on New Years day. From what I gather it was just an ordinary working day in the 1890's. On the other hand New Year was a different matter. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Our "Christmas special" - we don't have a Christmas cake - we have a clooty dumpling - my youngest daughter inherited the unwritten recipe from her Grandmother. ** 'clooty dumpling' - a steamed fruit pudding made in a cloth and, once cooked, dried in front of an open fire - it doesn't taste right otherwise ! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Best Wishes Les --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have a nice recipe for Clootie Dumpling which I will send (off list) if anyone is interested. Someone on one of the lists sent it to me a few years ago. I also have one for Skirlie.
