Peter, Many thanks for that. William Henderson was born on January 25th 1784, so would have been 86 years old at time of death. Can I ask where the registers and directories you mentioned are kept? Hi Chris These are all printed and published books which are available in large academic libraries and the National Libraries including the British Library. The Medical Register and Medical Directory were, and still are, annual volumes listing all doctors with British licences to practise; they have been published since the middle of the C19. Earlier editions often gave summary CVs of individual doctors too; modern privacy laws seem to have put the lid on that. The Medical Directory for Scotland came later and lasted for a shorter period; it may not have been an annual, but more of an occasional, and is found in fewer libraries. Large medical libraries will have complete sets of the British Medical Journal but, as I say, I am not sure when it began printing regular lists of medical obituaries. Most of the ancient Scottish universities have published list of C19 and earlier graduates; these are now out of print but again are usually available for reference in academic and national libraries. In the C18 and early C19, students often went to university very young, commonly at the age of 11 or 12 (for Arts students) or 15 or 16 (for medical students), so your William could have been the one who graduated at Edinburgh MD 1813 - but that is pure supposition. William and Henderson, after all, are common Scottish names. Hope this helps.
