Hi Folks Can anyone help me as to why my Stewarts are listed as Sdeuard on most of the certificates I have? On the same pages are other Stewarts but they are spelt that way and not Sdeuard like mine (Hope that makes sense). I'm assuming they are not from the same family but I suppose they could be.On some census documents they are spelt Stewart and everything matches so I know it is the correct family. Any ideas? Thanks in advance. Happy hunting! Jane ----------------------------------------- Email provided by http://www.ntlhome.com/
Hi Jane: Well, it could be worse. My Stewarts, from Weem and Lawers, went through a century where they called themselves McCombich (various spellings) which means "companions". Jane, Does it not actually say 'Steuart'? I've seen a 't' looking like a 'd' before. This spelling was a less common variant of Stewart & Stuart but can be found in the likes of economist Sir James Steuart (1713-1780), the Steurat family of Ballechin (descendants of an illegitimate son of James II of Scotland) or today in the Steuart-Fothringham family of Murthly Castle.
