Patrick, You asked about Stanley around 1800. I have a little book called 'Stanley: Its History and Development' which was produced in 1972 by an Extra-Mural class at Dundee University. It begins with the origins of Stanley in 1784 with the cotton mill, and ends in 1970s. Most of the info. about the town is around 1823-76 so this may be too late for you.
