Hello list I too have a soldier (English?) John CROMPTON (regiment unknown)as second husband to Ann KENNEDY living in Aberfeldy at the birth of his daughter. I haven't yet been able to get a positive ID, but possibility is a census entry later in York (barracks?). Since your dates are during the Napoleonic Wars, it may be that your man was in Scotland to recruit or be recruited into a Highland Regiment. The men of the Highlands were seen as ideal for effective, mobile light infantry & foot soldiers. I have a little book called 'Stanley: Its History and Development' which was produced in 1972 by an Extra-Mural class at Dundee University. It begins with the origins of Stanley in 1784 with the cotton mill, and ends in 1970s. Most of the info. about the town is around 1823-76 so this may be too late for you. If not, contact me and I'll send some details.
