Hello Listers, I've down-loaded the will of one of my GGG grandparents, James Mellis a shoemaker, who died in 1870, and I wonder if anyone can help me with some queries. He resided in Stobhall in the Parish of Cargill. Can anyone tell me anything about Stobhall in the Parish of Cargill? Is it a house or hamlet? Does it still exist? In his will he named his wife as Margaret COLLEY. But in his inventory she is named as Margaret MCCOLLOCH. (actual quote: At the Union Bank of Scotland in Perth in name of James MELLIS deceased and Mrs Margaret McColloch or Mellis, Cargill, payable to either of them or the surviver of them £ 51/1/2) Can anyone account for her 2 names - Margaret Colley and Margaret McColloch? The next item in his inventory is another bank account, this time solely to the credit of Margaret McColloch or Mellis. Should I assume she had already died? (And he hadn't transferred the money into his name.) Or did her money belong to him in Scots law? Is any other lister researching MELLIS in Cargill? The deponent for the will was David MELLIS shoemaker, son of James MELLIS. David Weymouth, Dorset
