Hi all Thank you very much Peter for all that information, the right family, it has both added to and confirmed research that we have. I hope you are able to solve your baffling mystery, Colin. >From Peter's information we are even more interested to know what the 1851 census says!! It could lead us to where Robert Hutton was born. So if any very kind person does have access to it, please we would love to hear from you. I only joined this list a few weeks ago, although not a newbie, I have not been involved in Scots research before. I have found the list most informative. Thank you all. Mary in West Oz >From : Peter Roy <peter@perth47.freeserve.co.uk> Mary, >From the outset of my interest in family history I came across this couple during the course of my research. I was looking for the details of my gt-gt grandmother Jessie Hutton who had a strong connection with Forgandenny. Robert and Grissel Hutton were prospective parents and this is what I know already if it is of any benefit. I have no lineage for Robert Hutton but Grissel was the daughter of James Duff, farmer, and Janet Kennedy (from Original Death Entry dated 1885). She was born on 28 June1802 (IGI and this ties up with her age on Death Entry) and she has been known through life as Grissel, Griz(z)el and Grace. Robert Hutton and Grissel Duff were married on the 3 Nov. 1826 in Forgandenny (IGI) and they had 9 children (IGI) These were all born in Forgandenny and were James 19 Jan 1827 John 3 Nov 1828 Janet 17 Jan 1830 Charles 25 Feb 1833 Christian 17 April 1836 Alexander 30 Nov 1838 William 12 July 1840 Peter 23 Aug 1843 Jessie 1 Oct 1850 Anecdotal information from a local historian in Forgandenny provided the following. Robert Hutton, and his wife Grizzell Duff, servant to Colonel Oliphant and living at Rossie Southgate up to 1831. Moved to Over Binzian until he and his wife retired to Boatloan in 1854. Children were registered as baptised when the minister made up a list of seceders. It then goes on to list the children as above. The Oliphants were a famous Scottish family and it is worthwhile looking them up on the internet for their history. Each of the places named are in the environs of Forgandenny so they didn't stray far. The 1881 Census shows a 79 year old widowed Grace Hutton still living at Bootloan (Boatloan) as a crofter. Her birthplace is recorded as Auchtergaven in Perthshire. She is shown living with her son-in law Robert Nicol (Robert Nicol is the informant on her Death Entry), a railway labourer, her daughter Jessie (presumably) and 4 grandchildren Robert (7), Grace (4) and John Nicol (3) as well as William Hutton (11). Grace died on 19 April 1885 at Croftwillock in the Parish of Forgandenny at the age of 83. She died of senile debility and pulmonary congestion. My problem is that this Jessie Hutton married Robert Nicol and appears to be alive in 1881. My Jessie Hutton definitely died in 1869 so there were more than one Jessie Hutton in Forgandenny in the mid 1860s. My Jessie Hutton was married in Forgandenny in 1866 and her parents were declared as John Hutton and Marrianne Walker. There was a suggestion in my family that Jessie's "father" was, in fact, her brother who brought her up from a young age. Possibly the same John who is the son of Robert Hutton and Grissel Duff. This is one mystery I have put to the side for a while but will come back to later in life. If you would like a copy of the original Death entry and/or a printout of the 1881 Census entry, let me know and if you are still looking for an 1851 census entry, Over Binzian in the parish of Forgandenny might be a good place to start. Oh, by the way, what is your interest in Robert and Grissel ?
