Hi Mary, I cannot assist with your query but would like to add one of my own to your Hutton thread. I am seeking more information regarding this family.... James Garvie m Janet Hutton 30/08/1812 .....Margaret Garvie 17/07/1813 .....John Murie Garvie 29/12/1816 .....James Garvie 22/05/1819 I am a little perplexed because according to son James Garvie's entry in the Register of Deaths his father is named as Lawrence Garvie and his mother Janet Hutton. Can someone perhaps help resolve this ambiguity for me? Colin, I have a copy of the original Death Entry of a John Garvie dated 1898 in the district of St. Mary in Dundee. This describes John as a retired forester and widower of Janet Luke. Death occurred on 21 May 1898 at 21 City Road, Dundee at the age of 78. His parents were Lawrence Garvie (deceased Master Blacksmith) and Janet Hutton (also deceased). The informant was James Garvie - son. I know you are interested in this time scale as I too have a Garvie link to Aberdalgie with Meldrum and Glass connections. It's all a bit messy and all these James Garvies, John Garvies and Lawrence Garvies are doing my head in as they say. If you would like a copy of this death entry, please let me know. Peter, Thank you for the information. > I have a copy of the original Death Entry of a John Garvie dated 1898 in the > district of St. Mary in Dundee. His parents were Lawrence Garvie (deceased Master > Blacksmith) and Janet Hutton (also deceased). The informant was James > Garvie - son. I had a transcription of this Death Entry and this was what actually prompted my query. The entry here indicates that John Garvie's parents were Lawrence Garvie and Janet Hutton. However IGI records indicate that Janet Hutton married a James Garvie. I am confused by this ambiguity. Was the incorrect information recorded here? Perhapes James Garvie was also known as Lawrence Garvie. The informant, James Garvie, was the eldest son which would suggest his grandfather was also James Garvie. There is also a discrepancy in age. If John Garvie died at age 78 in 1898 then his birth would have been 1819/1820. James Garvie and Janet Hutton had a son John Murie Garvie but born 1816. Is this the same John? Since there is no birth date in the Death Entry, could this suggest that the informant didn't have all the relevant facts? But surely he would have known his grandfather was James and not Lawrence? There appears to be no record that Janet might have married a Lawrence Garvie. > I know you are interested in this time scale as I too have a Garvie link to > Aberdalgie I am very much interested because this John Garvie was my great great grandfather. Janet Luke his wife is buried at Aberdalgie. John was buried at Dundee. I have the inscriptions of both graves if you do not have it already. I am hoping to visit Aberdalgie in April this year. > ....with Meldrum and Glass connections. It's all a bit messy and all > these James Garvies, John Garvies and Lawrence Garvies are doing my > head in as they say. My pursuit and frustration too. I sense there is a close connection between these two Aberdalgie families. Carolyn Wilson of Australia to whom I am indebted for much of my information has applied her mind to this dilemma too. My greatgrandfather, also a Laurance b.1845 at Aberdalgie confirms our suspicions. We thought the James Garvie who married Janet Hutton and Laurence Garvie may have been brothers whose parents were James Garvie and Janet Glass. But such a solution implies James Garvie married Janet Hutton at the age of 10!!!! Hardly likely. Carolyn Wilson also points out that the name Laurence, Laurance, Lawrence came into the Garvie line from Janet Glass's farther Lawrence Glass. Perhaps your reflections have suggested an alternate solution?. > If you would like a copy of this death entry, please let me know. Yes, please Peter. I only have the transcription. If you have a scan of the Death Register I would appreciate it. I have photos of the graves of Laurence and Helen Garvie, John Garvie, and Janet Garvie M.S.Luke should you wish copies. I would also be interested in what your link might be with any relevant genealogical data you might have relating to these families concerned.
