Hi Everyone, I notice there has been a few exchanges on the name MCNAUGHTON recently. I wonder if anyone recognises my JAMES MCNAUGHTON. I haven't been able to trace his birth but he was born around 1791 in Perth. I have no idea who his parents and/or siblings were but I do know quite a lot about his life. He enlisted in Edinburgh with the Black Watch in 1812 - he was a volunteer from the Royal Perthshire Militia - and his place of birth was given as Perth. His trade was cordwainer. He was a soldier in the 73rd Regiment when he married a MARY GIBSON in Edinburgh in 1813. Mary's father was a JOHN GIBSON, occupation Writer in Perth. I have quite a bit of information on his army career and he was discharged in 1833 with his intended place of residence being Edinburgh. James and Mary had six children that I am aware of - JOHN born 1818 Perth. WILLIAM born 1821. JAMES (my ancestor) born app. 1821 in Aberdeen going by census returns - no sign of this birth certificate yet. I assume his father must have been posted to the Aberdeenshire area at the time of his birth? MARY ANN MCNAUGHTON app. 1828 Edinburgh. ALEXANDER app 1831 Edinburgh. DONALD app 1837 Edinburgh. My soldier JAMES must have died sometimes between his discharge from the Black Watch in 1833 and the 1851 Census Edinburgh as this shows Mary a widow aged 56 living with her daughter Mary Ann and sons Alexander and Donald. I have searched to no available for JAMES' death and I feel that I am at a dead end as I don't know where to try next. Does anyone out there recognise my JAMES MCNAUGHTON? Or does anyone know where I can trace the records of the Royal Perthshire Militia? Or does anyone recognise MARY GIBSON. So many questions! Thank you for taking the time to read this. Best wishes, Pauline in Berkshire.
