The ordnance maps purchased from Tay Valley FHS have really helped me locate all the little farms, mills and parish churches. I found photos for most churches and villages on SCRAN or RCAHMS. PHOTOPOLIS has neat photos of Dundee but they are on SCRAN too. Gazeteer give general information on parishes http://www.geo.ed.ac.uk/scotgaz/gaztitle.html Before census in 1851, Scotland did Statistical Accounts which don't give surnames (so don't expect to get genealogical info) but gives general inforation about the economic conditions in that parish.1791-1799, and 1845. 300 or so questions were sent to the parish minister so their detail depend on his competeness.
