William NICHOLSON was born in 1783 in Dunblane, Perthshire, Sct. to George NICHOLSON and Margaret BAILLIE. He was a soldier in the Argyll Fencibles 1798- 1800 then, while in Ireland, joined the Rifle Brigade, 2nd Batt. He served with that regiment till retirement as Barrack sergeant in 1824, seeing action in South America and The Penninsular War. He was evacuated after the Retreat from Corunna back to England then Ireland where he served the rest of his army career before returning to Scotland He married Elizabeth DEWAR about whom I know very little except that the family lived near Dublin and children were born there included Margaret, my Gt grandmother, b. 1828 and Robert Dilworth NICHOLSON b.1820. William retired as a Chelsea Pensioner to St. Ninians, Stirling. He died there in 1850. Elizabeth Dewar NICHOLSON died in 1859 in Bogside, Perth.
