I have been searching for months for a marriage between William GRAY b. ca 1810 and a Margaret SWAN b. ca 1810. Their first child Duncan was born Sept. 1841, then Mary 1844, Margaret 1845, William 1846 & Janet 1848, all born in Kilmadock. Then they emigrated to Upper Canada (Ontario) where Jennie, Peter & James were born. Can anyone help me with finding this marriage ? I found a marriage on the IGI between a William GRAY & and Margaret LEVAN on 10 June 1841 in Kilmadock and I'm wondering if the names SWAN & LEVAN are interchangeable or transcribed wrong as both names end in AN. The date of this marriage is at about the right time & place. I checked the entire IGI batch #M113625 and there are no other LEVANs and no SWANs. If anyone would have access to the film maybe they could have a look at the name LEVAN. I'm trying to connect this William GRAY as a son to my ggg grandfather Duncan GRAY m. to Mary McLaren. I have a son William b. abt 9 Sep 1804 in Kincardine by Doune and I cannot prove these Williams are one and the same. Any help would be appreciated. -- Bob === Robert Neil Chatham-Kent, ON rneil@sympatico.ca
Bob, Only a couple of months??. Some of us have been searching for years. The answer should lie in either 1841 census or in the birth record of one of the children. Both are available on Scotland's People for a small fee and you can pay as you go. http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ The minimum spend is 6 UKP or about Can $15 for which you get about six lookups at a couple of dollars each. But the information is well worth the money. Duncan's birth for example should give mother's maiden name, age and birthplace, which I feel sure is Swan. If you look at the marriage, you should get parents for both bride and groom. I think it's money well spent, and not expensive. Alternatively, if you have an Ancestry subscription, you can check 1841 census for Kilmadock and see if there is a Margaret Swan or Margaret Levan in the town. I think I'm correct in saying that the census would be around March April and they married a couple of months later. So they should still be at home with parents unless working elsewhere, Peter in Sydney
Hello Bob You are quite right in thinking that the name LEVAN has been transcribed wrongly. The image of the original marriage entry is on the Scotlands People website and the name of the bride is 'SWAN' and not 'LEVAN'. What is strange is that Scotlands People has also transcribed the name wrongly as they have indexed the marriage under the name LEVAN. I think it is quite clearly 'Swan' but perhaps I was helped by your identifying the surname. I will send you the image off-list but it won't help you to identify his parents. This was a marriage before the introduction of statutory registration, and there is no mention of occupation or parents in the entry in the parish register. I will ask Scotlands People to amend their index.
