    3. George, The family name McDiarmid is closely aligned with the name Campbell and as such there were hundreds and hundreds of them in and around Loch Tay. Why the Marquis of Breadalbane hissell was a Campbell and owned all the land on both sides of Loch Tay going west to Crianlarich and east to Aberfeldy and South over the Sma;Glen. His lands there abutted the Murray lands of Ochtertyre. On the north side of the loch this included Tyndrum where it abutted Campbell lands from Inverary, Crianlarich, Lix Toll, Killin and then Lawers, Machuim, Fortingall and Kenmore to Dull and Weem. On the south side of the loch it encompassed Ardeonaig and and Altalnaig (abutting Drummond land along the sky line to the south) down to Aberfeldy swinging south over toward Moness eventually meeting at Amulree and then returning over Glen Quaich to Kenmore. The Fourth marquis cleared out the Amulree area in 1834 with many poor souls ending up in Hopetown, now Ontario, Canada. It pleases me no end that the last surviving wretch of this family ended up playing the bagpipes in the London underground for pennies! On Scaring Some Water-Fowl In Loch-Turit Why, ye tenants of the lake, For me your wat'ry haunt forsake? Tell me, fellow-creatures, why At my presence thus you fly? Why disturb your social joys, Parent, filial, kindred ties?-- Common friend to you and me, Nature's gifts to all are free: Peaceful keep your dimpling wave, Busy feed, or wanton lave; Or, beneath the sheltering rock, Bide the surging billow's shock. Conscious, blushing for our race, Soon, too soon, your fears I trace, Man, your proud, usurping foe, Would be lord of all below: Plumes himself in freedom's pride, Tyrant stern to all beside. The eagle, from the cliffy brow, Marking you his prey below, In his breast no pity dwells, Strong necessity compels: But Man, to whom alone is giv'n A ray direct from pitying Heav'n, Glories in his heart humane-- And creatures for his pleasure slain! In these savage, liquid plains, Only known to wand'ring swains, Where the mossy riv'let strays, Far from human haunts and ways; All on Nature you depend, And life's poor season peaceful spend. Or, if man's superior might Dare invade your native right, On the lofty ether borne, Man with all his pow'rs you scorn; Swiftly seek, on clanging wings, Other lakes and other springs; And the foe you cannot brave, Scorn at least to be his slave. [The end] Robert Burns's poem: On Scaring Some Water-Fowl In Loch-Turit You may wish to have a look at www.highlandstrathearn for some background information on some of the area. Hope to see you if I can, Colin Peter ________________________________________________ On 9/20/2010 5:58 PM, perthshire-request@rootsweb.com wrote: > > Today's Topics: > > 1. Glenturret (George F. By way of explanation, the bride of the marriage record which prompted my question was Lucy McDiarmid, who married a resident of Laggan in the Parish of Kilmonivaig in 1812, following which happy event the couple immediately settled in the Parish of Lairg, Sutherlandshire, where neither had any connections, as near as I can tell. With all this moving about, I'm trying to learn whether the McDiarmids had any connection to Glenturret. I know that some of the McDiarmid family were from Fortingall. > > No prepositions appear in the actual record of marriage, so there is no indication that the bride was "of" Glenturret or merely "in" Glenturret. > > Moran taing a' rithist a h-uile duine. > > George > > > ------------------------------ > > Message: 2 > Date: Mon, 20 Sep 2010 07:54:21 -0400 > From: Rossion Inc<info@rossion.com> > Subject: Re: [PERTHSHIRE] PERTHSHIRE Digest, Vol 5, Issue 117 > To: perthshire@rootsweb.com > Message-ID:<4C974B6D.2040701@rossion.com> > Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed > > Glen Turret lies in Monzievaird (now Monzie) Parish just outside the > town of Crieff. Some of my lines and other (likely related) McCallum lines were in the Glenturret/Hosh area for years, including one or two at the distillery, with others later at Wester Fendoch, Greenfield, Foulford and other locations mid C19. My lot went to the Glenturret& Crieff area around 1800, before which they were in Glenquaich. Rob Maxtone-Graham - reads this list occasionally I think - was a great help in showing me the big picture of McCALLUMs on Lochtayside and I'm still taking it from there. I had plenty of detail on them, but no overview. > > For the record: these people got about. > Whichever parish Glenturret belonged to, I have found my family's records and burial places in various parishes: Crieff, Fowlis Wester, Monzie, Weem, Dull, Logierait, Methven, and the rest. > > I was also interested to note the story of the couple that were whisked away to Sutherland for no apparent reason. In 1802, my 3x great grandmother Janet McCallum from Glenquaich 1877 married (2nd/cousin?) James McCallum at Monzie and they farmed in Ross-shire. I might never have believed that this was my couple, had the minister not been obliging enough to record that James was from Ross-shire while Janet was OTP in Monzie. They raised their children near Dingwall and gave Amulree and Breadalbane as their place of birth. In 1841, their son, my 2x great grandfather Duncan McCallum born 1810 Ross-shire was found with his auntie back in Wester Fendoch and somewhere in Crieff in 1851. Cattle dealers. Until I read Haldane's Drove Roads of Scotland and realised that all these places, and Amulree might seem obscure to me here in the low and wetlands of Mainland Europe - but they are the all-important junctions and tryst points on the drove roads! Looking at the map, I realize that Lairg in Sutherland where your couple went falls in this category too.... > On the through road from the north and west.
