Hello from New Zealand I have sent this to the three lists in the hope that the combined brains may be able to help me. I recently "completed" research on the family of a deceased distant cousin from Vancouver BC. Now I am helping his widow with her ancestry. She is the gggd of William PATTON d 1796 who lived in Fossoway Kinross for much of his life and most of the children were all born there. We ave been able to follow this line through a great deal. I believe that William was the son of James Murray PATON/PATTON (and Ann MARSHALL) as the forenames James Murray were used in the next two generations from William. Also the birth year from the census returns would tie in with the birth of a William PATON/PATTON in the IGI and Scotland's People. In that case he had 5 siblings according to the IGI. James Murray PATON/PATTON b 1790 Ann PATON/PATTON b 1791 Thomas PATON/PATTON b 1793 Margaret Ann PATON/PATTON b 1797 George PATON/PATTON b 1803 The names James Murray, Thomas and George all appear in William's will!!! While the names PATON and PATTON are not too common they are common enough to give me trouble in finding out descendants. Is anyone able to confirm the marriages of the 5 other children mentioned above and to start me off with any of their children, please? And also to start me off on a census hunt with either/or/and the 1851 and 1841 census details of them. Thank you Mike

Mike, You should find it all on Scotland's People and while it's a pay site, at about NZ$2 per lookup, it's pretty cheap if used selectively. That will also give you the census records. I resisted for many years, but I'm now a firm fan. Besides, people who may provide the information would have to incur the same costs. Try the free pathway first like IGI and Rootsweb family trees. Even Google some of the names using quotation marks. But it should all be there at Scotland's People if the lady is willing to spend a few dollars. Peter in Sydney
