Mike, You should find it all on Scotland's People and while it's a pay site, at about NZ$2 per lookup, it's pretty cheap if used selectively. That will also give you the census records. I resisted for many years, but I'm now a firm fan. Besides, people who may provide the information would have to incur the same costs. Try the free pathway first like IGI and Rootsweb family trees. Even Google some of the names using quotation marks. But it should all be there at Scotland's People if the lady is willing to spend a few dollars. Peter in Sydney
Hello from New Zealand I have sent this to the three lists in the hope that the combined brains may be able to help me. I recently "completed" research on the family of a deceased distant cousin from Vancouver BC. Now I am helping his widow with her ancestry. She is the gggd of William PATTON d 1796 who lived in Fossoway Kinross for much of his life and most of the children were all born there. We ave been able to follow this line through a great deal. I believe that William was the son of James Murray PATON/PATTON (and Ann MARSHALL) as the forenames James Murray were used in the next two generations from William. Also the birth year from the census returns would tie in with the birth of a William PATON/PATTON in the IGI and Scotland's People. In that case he had 5 siblings according to the IGI. James Murray PATON/PATTON b 1790 Ann PATON/PATTON b 1791 Thomas PATON/PATTON b 1793 Margaret Ann PATON/PATTON b 1797 George PATON/PATTON b 1803 The names James Murray, Thomas and George all appear in William's will!!! While the names PATON and PATTON are not too common they are common enough to give me trouble in finding out descendants. Is anyone able to confirm the marriages of the 5 other children mentioned above and to start me off with any of their children, please? And also to start me off on a census hunt with either/or/and the 1851 and 1841 census details of them. Thank you Mike
Hello from NZ I don't know if this is possible but I thought I would give it a try!! The Perth Museum and Art Gallery has two paintings of James Murray PATON/PATTON, accession numbers 9/6 and FA6/80. I wondered if soemone would be able and willing to take digital photos of them and send them to me please. I am researching who I believe to be his son William b 1806, the ancestor of a relative who is a direct descendant. Thank you Mike
Mike, The museum doesn't like people taking digital pics inside, but the image might not actually be on display - best to check with them if they can do a copy. Incidentally see http://www.archive.org/stream/cu31924029810979/cu31924029810979_djvu.txt - there's a bit more on James there. Hello Katie Those names don't seem to work in with what I know so far but I will keep just in case. Thank you Mike -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mike, list, I'm not sure how useful it is, but my first cousin 4 times removed, James McCallum of Glenalmond, first married Catherine Paton, b 1815, whose parents John Paton & Margaret Murray married Methven 1814 and raised their children in the Glenalmond/Fowlis Wester area. John Pat(t)on's father was Thomas Paton. Various Murrays in those lines.
I was directed to an archived post by Marilyn STIRLING from 2000 but the email address in it bounced. I wonder if someone could point me in the right direction. It is about the name PATTON/PATON Thanks Mike in Kawerau NZ
Hello Peter. Thanks, every little helps. I'm sure that there is a strong connection because one name appears before and after the William I am working from. Mike ----- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Fossoway was where the Jacobite "White Cockade" came from. Half of Perthshire, including Glen Almond, was owned by the Murrays of Ochteryre, Abercairney and Atholl! It still is! Do not know of any connection between the Murrays and the Pattons. Peter
Hello Chris. It gives me quite a lot to work through but the name in the first piece James Murray PATTON has me excited as William PATTON's second son was James Murray PATTON!!! Thank you Mike -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi there, See http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/PERTHSHIRE/2000-12/0975684489 - you'll find some connections between the Murrays and the Patons there. I have copies of summaries I made from charters which I examined from the privately held King James VI chartularies when doing a university course a couple of years back. They concern property transactions in Perth, and James Murray Paton or Patton, the Sheriff Clerk of Perth, who was from Cairnies, Glenalmond:
Hello from New Zealand In the will of William PATTON of Fossoway in 1845 there is a reference to a James MURRAY Esquire of Glenalmond. I am assuming that this is the Glenalmond Estate in Perthshire!! I wondered if anyone is able to help me with any information about the name James MURRAY and if there is a connection to the PATTON name. Also any information about Glenalmond. I am hoping for a marriage of the two names in the early 1800s. Thank you Mike

John Findlay Minister of Saint Paul's Church Parish of Perth Rev. William Aird Thomson Minister of the Middle Church Parish of Perth Rev. James Esdaile, Minister of the East Church of Perth Rev. Samuel George Kennedy, Minister of the West Church of Perth Elders of the said Parishes of Perth On 22 MAY 1795, Thomas Anderson Esquire, then of Blackfriars, sold Lots 1, 2 and 3 of the South Division of Rose Terrace to Thomas Hay Marshall, who held it under Anderson in feu. Considering Thomas Anderson having become embarrassed, his estates, real and personal, were sequestrated by the Lords of Council & Session, and the lands belonging to him having been sold, the managers of the Hospital acquired them and the right to superiority on them, conform to a Disposition dated 2 NOV 1799 granted in their favour by William Marshall, agent for the bank of Scotland in Perth, trustee on the sequestrated estate, which was recorded in the Burgh Court Book of Perth on 27 MAY 1800. Despite the prohibition on subinfeudating the lots further, Thomas Hay Marshall then sold the Lots, as noted in the feu charter of 28 OCT 1805, to be held of himself, to Robert Morrison printer in Perth, for payment of feu duty of 30s Sterling, payable annually at Whitsunday, and doubling at Whitsunday 1832 and every 19th year thereafter, for those years only. On 4 JUL 1814 Robert Morrison sold the Lots to John Scott, teacher in Perth, whose son John Scott, printer, then conveyed the property to peter Brown Esquire, conform to the Disposition after mentioned. James Patton Esquire of Glenalmond acquired the right of superiority from Thomas Hay Marshall, and then conveyed the right to Misses Margaret and Mary Eavine McDougall, lately residing in Perth, but now in at Ballachuan in the parish of Kilbrandon in Argyleshire, conform to a Disposition in their favour dated 8 JUL 1830, and they then conveyed the right of superiority to the Hospital in 1831. Peter Brown has now paid the Hospital £21 as the adequate and agreed on price and value of an annual payment of 20s being part of the feu duty of 30s per year payable, leaving him now to pay 10s per year in feu duty. The Hospital also now dispones in his favour the piece of ground on the east of Barossa Street or Printing House Lane in Blackfriars of Perth along with the house erected on it which was formerly a printing house, and now converted into a schoolroom, dwelling house and others consisting of 44 feet in length from north to south, erected principally on the back ground belonging to Lot 3 of Rose Terrace and partly on the back ground of Lot 2, and bounded by printing House Lane or Barossa Street on the west; by part of the back ground of Lot 2 on the south; partly by the remaining back ground of Lot 3, and partly by a small house erected by Dr. james McFarlane on the back ground of Lot 2 on the East; and by the back ground of Lot 4 on the north. Free ish and entry is granted on the aforesaid lane or street and through no other way. The proprietors of Lot 3 have access through a four feet wide entry from the foresaid lane through th subjects disponed, the height of the ground story of the aforesaid Printing house. And Peter Brown must place iron bars in the window of the ground story, if not already done, to guard against intrusion from the Printing house into the back ground, and conform to the agreement whereby the heirs and assignees of Thomas Hay Marshall were bound by a charter granted in favour of Robert Morrison not to erect any building within 15 feet of the Printing House, in order to protect the access of light into the building. Peter Brown is prevented from subinfeudating the property further. he must also pave the area five feet wide outside his property on Barossa Street, and to causeway to the middle of the street the length of his property, and to keep it in good repair. In future documents, he is to include the reddendo aftermentioned, and all conditions and provisions already stated, failure to do so meaning his contract with the Hospital will be null and void, along with all rights enjoyed by the Hospital to the ground, formerly held by John Scott as vassal or proprietor under James Paton, his heirs and successors as immediate lawful superiors of Scott, to which superiority the Hospital acquired the right as previously described. John Scott's Procuratory of Resignation in favour of Peter Brown is dated 17 NOV 1830, with consent of Robert Robertson, merchant in Perth, trustee for the creditors conform to Trust Disposition executed by the said John Scott in his favour in 1830, and given in to Robert Clink at the Hospital. Peter Brown is now made infeft. The feu duty payable is 10s annually at Whitsunday, and doubling at Whitsunday 1832 and each 19th year thereafter, for those years only. Precept of Sasine is duly given. (No witness listed) I should add that I am not connected to this line of Patons - at least not yet! Hope it helps! Fossoway was where the Jacobite "White Cockade" came from. Half of Perthshire, including Glen Almond, was owned by the Murrays of Ochteryre, Abercairney and Atholl! It still is! Do not know of any connection between the Murrays and the Pattons. Peter On 18/02/2010 2:32 PM, perthshire-request@rootsweb.com wrote: > > Today's Topics: > > 1. MURRAY (Mike) > 2. they go back that far, but you run into initials only listed the farther you go back. the spelling in phonetic as it is on records, so there are more "variants". ex: by Geo Millin (flanked) da Isobel Millne 12.1773 2 y-m Margrat Milln 5.2.1772 27 2y6m, his son John Milln 18.11.1781 1y9m. G.M. E.M. You'll notice less info on the dates (just month and year). I don't know if they were saving money by less of an inscription?? Mary In a message dated 2/12/2010 11:57:09 A.M.
