Thanks for the thoughts, Peter. I started researching this family in 1990 and trolled through the Dundee [and many other] censuses for 1841, 1851, 1861 reel by reel. It took hours and was truly headache inducing! If listers have only used Ancestry or other online censuses you have no idea - when the LDS produced the 1881 on disk it was wonderful [even with the limitations]. There are actually only 4 John Gibbs born in Perthshire within 5 years of 1784. In the census, John Gibb said he was born in Perth [city] & he was evidently still in the city in 1827 when his youngest son was baptized there. My new information is his death record which I just downloaded - no idea why I haven't done this before - and it says his father was James Gibb. Only the John Gib baptized in Perth had a father named James. I misspoke previously as there is a bap in Forteviot for John Gibb, s/o David and Mary Frazer in 1788. I had reservations because he was a little young to be the man in Dundee, though we all know that ages can be inaccurate, and because on the census John Gibb never said he was born in Forteviot. The full record of the 1808 marriage in Dundee is basic: it gives their names, the date, his occupation and states they were residents of the parish. Gibb's occupation [iron founder or moulder] is consistent on the censuses, his death record, his son's death record and also on his wife's death record. There are no wills for this family group. What I am really interested in is whether or not a lister has researched the Gibbs in the city of Perth or the Sim family. Liane
Hi Listers, If someone was listed in the above Census as living at "Cuith in Moulin" where abouts in the Moulin Parish would they be living. Any suggestions welcomed. Gaye in New Zealand.
Gaelic place names get corrupted all the time so when looking for a particularly place it's always a good idea to look for anything that looks even remotely similar. So Tina's suggestion below is certainly warranted. That being said I'm inclined to think that Carn a Mheanbh-Chruidh is probably not the same place as Cuith. Carn a Mheanbh-Chruidh = "cairn of the little horseshoe" Cuith (Cuithe) = "wreath of snow" As each of these place names is a legitimate name on it's own I'm inclined to think that one has not been corrupted into the other. However, having just received John Moon's suggestion of "Cuilt" I'm now going to contradict myself. Cuilt ("woods") is a very common place name and could easily have been mis-read or mis-transcribed as "Cuith". I would be inclined to lean towards Cuilt as the more likely of the two suggestions so far. I'm afraid I'm not familiar enough with place names in Moulin to offer a more informed opinion. I was using Scotland's People last night when I realized that an individual I am interested in, JOHN GIBB, moulder, who lived in Dundee [md Ann Mathew 1808] was alive beyond 1855. There was only one candidate in the deaths, so I paid for the death entry and discovered that his father was James Gibb, blacksmith, deceased, mother's MS unknown. I had thought his father was David Gibb and mother Mary Fraser of Forteviot/Dunning, particularly since some of their children moved to Dundee to work and Fraser was a name used in my line. But a baptism was never found. JOHN GIBB, moulder, said in the 1861 census that he was born in Perth abt 1779/80 and his son said he was 84 on the 1864 death record. I don't see a 1780 baptism for a John Gibb. There is a baptism in Perth in 1784 for John Gib, s/o James Gib, blacksmith, and Margaret Sim. The father's name, occupation and residence match the Dundee death record. Does anyone have knowledge of this family? James Gib, smith, Perth md Margaret Sim d/o James Sim shoemaker in Perth, 1 Dec 1780. Thanks, Liane Fenimore

Hi Rhoda, Many thanks for your help. I took your advise and with the information I found have been able to go back another couple of generations, plus also solved another query as to why some of the later generations were given their middle names. Once again many thanks. Jennie
There is a small FHS inside their library. Blairgowrie Genealogy Centre is based at Blairgowrie Library in Leslie Street. Volunteers from Blairgowrie and Rattray Local History Trust are available to help with family history enquiries related to the local area. The Centre is open from 2pm to 4pm on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from Spring to Autumn. Visits at other times can be arranged by appointment. Mary In a message dated 7/5/2010 4:50:57 P.M. Jennie The Scotlands People website has the registration of the death of an Annie Ferguson, other name Lindsay, in 1857 in Blairgowrie. She was 81 at the time of her death. The death certificate which can be downloaded from the site should give you the names of her parents, including the maiden name of her mother. This assumes that the informant knew the names of her parents, of course. See: www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk There are also 7 children listed for this couple in the OPR birth index on the same site. My ggg-grandfather was an apprentice slater in Milnathort, Kinross-shire. We still have in the family his original "Indenture of Apprenticeship", http://www.chalmers-family.org/Kinross/JDC/appendix01.html - for both a transliteration and a photograph of the original. Records of apprenticeships were kept in burghs and Royal Burghs, but not generally in smaller towns, so we are fortunate to have this.. An apprenticeship would generally last for seven years. You will see from my "Indenture" the contract was not signed until a year after my ggg-grandfather had actually started working, and it was actually terminated "for a certain sum" some months short of the seven years completion. My ggg-grandfather was 11 when he started work in 1806, and we speculate that his elder brother also served an apprenticeship for the same man, but probably 5 years earlier. The apprenticeship was terminated so that my ggg-grandfather could start work with his brother. Hello Lister, I am trying to find information regarding my great-grandfather James GARDINER b c1826 to James Gardiner (Quarrier) and Anne SCOTT, probably in Creiff. On the 1841 census it says he is an Apprentice Shoemaker - can anyone tell me where I may find information about apprenticeships please? Before becoming a farmer in Victoria in the late 1850s he was a shoemaker in Victoria too. Any information regarding his parents would also be gratefully accepted. TIA, Lorraine (Dodemaide) Standfield, Victoria, Australia.
The records of the Guilds of Crieff are virtually all lost . In 1837 , 4 years prior to the first census there were some 27 shoemakers /souters / cobblers/ bootmakers in the Parish according to Piggots Directory . They were a particularly active Guild and the celebration of St Crispins Day ( he was their patron saint ) and had the town's first band . They were in the forefront of the processions that were held in connection with the run up to the 1832 Reform Act . This extract from an 1829 Perthshire Courier makes interesting reading. Although it doesn't say so it was part of the local agitation for reform . Things were politically dynamite . Hardie a weaver and two accomplices had been hung drawn and quartered some 22 miles down the road at Stirling for participation in the 1820 Battle of Bonnymuir an incident air brushed out of most school history books . After that protest was more subtle .10 to 12 000 attended when the Parish population was about 4 500 ! Sure your ancestor deserves our thanks for what is not generally known . 13 August 1829 CRIEFF The inhabitants of Crieff and neighbourhood were on Thursday week gratified with a procession in honour of St Crispin which excited an interest proportioned to the rarity of such exhibitions in this quarter . The new and splendid robes of Perth Royal St Crispin Lodge were borrowed for the occasion and a deputation from Muthill was escorted to the town accompanied by the Crieff Instrumental Band . The procession when arranged had a very imposing appearance ; it proceeded from the lodge through the Comrie Street , Burrell Street to the Gallowhill , and passing through King Street , St James Square , and the High Street proceeded as far east as the Toll bar from which it returned to the Lodge . The day being fine the streets were crowded to excess , and upon a moderate calculation the crowd must have amounted to 10 or 12 thousand . A ball which was kept up with spirit till a late hour next morning concluded the festivities of the occasion . Col in Crieff
