    3. Good orning listers, Many thanks to all for the interesting information about Glenturret and the MacDiarmids. For those who may be interested, the Lucy MacDiarmid whom I have mentioned, as well as several contemporaries who were perhaps brothers or other close relatives, emigrated over a period of years between the 1820s to the early 1840s to Pictou County, Nova Scotia, Canada. Lucy and her husband and children settled in the Egerton District, later called Middle River and now Rocklin. Hugh, John, Archibald, Ewen, and perhaps others of the surname MacDiarmid settled at Barney's River, Pictou County. Some, at least, seem to be buried in Kenzieville Cemetery near Barney's River, with at least one thin branch of the descendants moving to Minnesota, U.S.A., at an early date. It is thought that at least one of the above came from Fortingall. I am not really carrying on a search of the MacDiarmids, but am seeking to document Lucy MacDiarmid and hope to learn her parents' names. (Lucy appears as Louisa in some records.) I mention all this in case it is of interest or use to MacDiarmid researchers. George Sanborn Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island

    3. List, George and Col, Very much looking forward to seeing any and all Rent Rolls for Ochtertyre, to home in on any of my McCALLUM family who may have been there. Some of my lines and other (likely related) McCallum lines were in the Glenturret/Hosh area for years, including one or two at the distillery, with others later at Wester Fendoch, Greenfield, Foulford and other locations mid C19. My lot went to the Glenturret & Crieff area around 1800, before which they were in Glenquaich. Rob Maxtone-Graham - reads this list occasionally I think - was a great help in showing me the big picture of McCALLUMs on Lochtayside and I'm still taking it from there. I had plenty of detail on them, but no overview. For the record: these people got about. Whichever parish Glenturret belonged to, I have found my family's records and burial places in various parishes: Crieff, Fowlis Wester, Monzie, Weem, Dull, Logierait, Methven, and the rest. I was also interested to note the story of the couple that were whisked away to Sutherland for no apparent reason. In 1802, my 3x great grandmother Janet McCallum from Glenquaich 1877 married (2nd/cousin?) James McCallum at Monzie and they farmed in Ross-shire. I might never have believed that this was my couple, had the minister not been obliging enough to record that James was from Ross-shire while Janet was OTP in Monzie. They raised their children near Dingwall and gave Amulree and Breadalbane as their place of birth. In 1841, their son, my 2x great grandfather Duncan McCallum born 1810 Ross-shire was found with his auntie back in Wester Fendoch and somewhere in Crieff in 1851. Cattle dealers. But then he married a lassie from Lochussie in Ross-shire and whisked her off to Sutherland as well! Fair enough, these people were farmers and cattle dealers, so unsurprising that they were mobile - but I did wonder what took them to such unlikely spots as Conon Bridge near Dingwall - and Melvich in Sutherland, on the coast about as far north as you can go on mainland Scotland... Until I read Haldane's Drove Roads of Scotland and realised that all these places, and Amulree might seem obscure to me here in the low and wetlands of Mainland Europe - but they are the all-important junctions and tryst points on the drove roads! Looking at the map, I realize that Lairg in Sutherland where your couple went falls in this category too.... On the through road from the north and west. Your relations may not have been cattle people, but since everything had to pass these points, there are no end of reasons why they might have gone there from Perthshire to find employment of some sort. The area known as Glenturret lies in the Parish of Monzievaird and Strowan ( pronounced mony –vaird ) which is to the north and west of Crieff Parish . Loch Turret and the Glen lay in the lands on the Murrays of Ochtertyre . I have just transcribed the Rent Roll of the Estate for the 1865 which I intend posting on my web site shortly . Glenturret comprised a number of small farms and latterly was given over to sheep . Farms included the Hosh , Ballochalloch , House of Burn and on the periphery the Quoigs ( pronounced Quiggs !! ) The Turret Burn flows from Loch Turret down through what is MacRosty Park in Crieff and joins the Earn at Lady Mary’s Walk . The Turret distillery ( now the Famous Grouse Experience ) claims to be the oldest distillery in Scotland . The Loch provided Crieff with its water courtesy of the Murrays for generations and the Murray Fountain in James Square Crieff was erected as a token of thanks to the family . The Loch was dammed in the 1950s and a number of habitations disappeared particularly the shooting lodge of Rhuad Mhor . 3. George, The family name McDiarmid is closely aligned with the name Campbell and as such there were hundreds and hundreds of them in and around Loch Tay. Why the Marquis of Breadalbane hissell was a Campbell and owned all the land on both sides of Loch Tay going west to Crianlarich and east to Aberfeldy and South over the Sma;Glen. His lands there abutted the Murray lands of Ochtertyre. On the north side of the loch this included Tyndrum where it abutted Campbell lands from Inverary, Crianlarich, Lix Toll, Killin and then Lawers, Machuim, Fortingall and Kenmore to Dull and Weem. On the south side of the loch it encompassed Ardeonaig and and Altalnaig (abutting Drummond land along the sky line to the south) down to Aberfeldy swinging south over toward Moness eventually meeting at Amulree and then returning over Glen Quaich to Kenmore. The Fourth marquis cleared out the Amulree area in 1834 with many poor souls ending up in Hopetown, now Ontario, Canada. It pleases me no end that the last surviving wretch of this family ended up playing the bagpipes in the London underground for pennies! On Scaring Some Water-Fowl In Loch-Turit Why, ye tenants of the lake, For me your wat'ry haunt forsake? Tell me, fellow-creatures, why At my presence thus you fly? Why disturb your social joys, Parent, filial, kindred ties?-- Common friend to you and me, Nature's gifts to all are free: Peaceful keep your dimpling wave, Busy feed, or wanton lave; Or, beneath the sheltering rock, Bide the surging billow's shock. Conscious, blushing for our race, Soon, too soon, your fears I trace, Man, your proud, usurping foe, Would be lord of all below: Plumes himself in freedom's pride, Tyrant stern to all beside. The eagle, from the cliffy brow, Marking you his prey below, In his breast no pity dwells, Strong necessity compels: But Man, to whom alone is giv'n A ray direct from pitying Heav'n, Glories in his heart humane-- And creatures for his pleasure slain! In these savage, liquid plains, Only known to wand'ring swains, Where the mossy riv'let strays, Far from human haunts and ways; All on Nature you depend, And life's poor season peaceful spend. Or, if man's superior might Dare invade your native right, On the lofty ether borne, Man with all his pow'rs you scorn; Swiftly seek, on clanging wings, Other lakes and other springs; And the foe you cannot brave, Scorn at least to be his slave. [The end] Robert Burns's poem: On Scaring Some Water-Fowl In Loch-Turit You may wish to have a look at www.highlandstrathearn for some background information on some of the area. By way of explanation, the bride of the marriage record which prompted my question was Lucy McDiarmid, who married a resident of Laggan in the Parish of Kilmonivaig in 1812, following which happy event the couple immediately settled in the Parish of Lairg, Sutherlandshire, where neither had any connections, as near as I can tell. With all this moving about, I'm trying to learn whether the McDiarmids had any connection to Glenturret. 3. Thanks to Colin and Peter for catching my error regarding Glen Turret being in the parish of Monzie(vaird) rather than Crieff. I knew the boundary line for the two parishes was somewhere nearby in that area, but I was mistaken as to which side of that line Glen Turret was on. I'm more familiar with the parish boundaries to the west of Crieff. Ryk frae Canada

    3. Dear Listers, Many thanks to all for the interesting replies to my query regarding the parish wherein Glenturret is located. I know that some of the McDiarmid family were from Fortingall. No prepositions appear in the actual record of marriage, so there is no indication that the bride was "of" Glenturret or merely "in" Glenturret. Moran taing a' rithist a h-uile duine. George

    3. Glen Turret lies in Monzievaird (now Monzie) Parish just outside the town of Crieff. One of my great uncles was killed in a lightning strike in the Turret Burn before it was dammed creating Loch Turret. The old Murray hunting lodge lies submerged beneath the surface. of Loch Turret. Loch Turret is the source of fresh water to Crieff. Burns, whilst at of the Murrays at Ochtertyre House, wrote his beautiful poem to water fowl along its banks. I will be staying very close to it next week! :-) Peter On 9/20/2010 3:01 AM, perthshire-request@rootsweb.com wrote: > > Today's Topics: > > 1. Location of Glenturret (George F. Sanborn Jr.) > 2. 2. Somewhat belated response to George regarding Glenturret ! 3. Gu Seoras Og Glenturret is in Crieff parish and is located about 4 miles northwest of the town of Crieff. There's a very nice distillery named after the glen which is located about a mile north of the town of Crieff at the foot of the glen. You can see the exact location here: http://www.multimap.com/s/Oa2BlXYn (Make sure you click on "OS Map" to see the detailed map. If the marriage record is a parish marriage record and it states that the bride was "of Glenturret" then it would definitely be referring to a farmstead and her parents would be the owners of it. If they were tenants there then she would have been described as "in" Glenturret. "Of" implies ownership. I don't see a farmstead named Glenturret on the current OS map above, so I would presume the former farmstead is now extinct. If you check one of the old 19th century maps here: http://maps.nls.uk/index.html you may be able to find the exact location. Who knows, perhaps it may be on the site of the current distillery?
