    2. Rhonda Windsor
    3. Hi all, I was wondering whether anyone has the 1841 census index or the 1851 census index and could possibly do a surname search for me. The surname that I am interested in is GENTLE, GENTLES or GENTLEMAN. Any instance of these surnames would be welcome. I know that the one branch of the family was in Cargill in 1790's, and I think that one son was found in Woodside village in 1841. At some time, another son moved to Dundee. Thank you for your time. 3. Hi Karen Isn't it about time that you gave them their communion token back?! Auchterarder South United Presbyterian Church. Two of mine were married there in 1860 by minister George Jacque. The Rev Jacque wrote the following book, which I've yet to read but sounds interesting: Database: National Library of Scotland -- Main Catalogue Main author: Pastor. Title: Tales and sketches of Scottish life, with poems / by pastor [i.e. George Jacque]. Imprint: Edinburgh : J. Hogg, 1850. Format: Book Pagination: 250 p. ; 8vo. NLS note: THIS IS A TEMPORARY CATALOGUE 1 RETROCONVERTED RECORD Name added entry: Jacque, George. From SCAN: http://195.153.34.3/scan/ Auchterarder Relief Church was established in 1777 when members of Blackford Church petitioned the Relief Presbytery of Glasgow for sermon. The church was probably opened in 1780 at which time the congregation became known as Auchterarder Relief Church. In 1847 the Relief Church amalgamated with the United Secession Church to form the United Presbyterian Church. The congregation became Auchterarder South United Presbyterian Church in the Presbytery of Perth. In 1900 following the union of the Free Church with the United Presbyterian Church the charge became Auchterarder South United Free Church. In 1913 the church was united with Auchterarder Trinity to form Auchterarder West United Free Church. The South church was retained as a place of worship. In 1929 the United Free Church joined the Church of Scotland and the charge became Auchterarder West Church of Scotland, Presbytery of Auchterarder. In 1954 the congregation was united with Auchterarder St Andrew's as Auchterarder St Andrew's and West. In 1983 Auchterarder Parish Church was formed by the union of Auchterarder St Andrew's and West and Auchterarder Barony Church. all the best Gavin. ----- Original Message ----- From: "ksteel" <ksteel@optonline.net> To: <PERTHSHIRE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, November 04, 2003 9:58 PM Subject: [PERTH] Auchterarder SUP church > Hello List! > I've have a communion token for the Auchterarder SUP church. 3. Hi Listers, I am really interested in the above surnames from Moulin Parish - in particular anyone who has descendants of the following marriages: 1.. Donald FORBES = Ann CAMERON at Mouline - both of this Parish - February 2nd 1784 2.. Donald MCGREGOR = Janet CAMERON - have not located this marriage but they are given as the parents of Mary McGREGOR [widow of John FORBES] who died at Balmald, Parish of Kirkmichael on March 25th 1865 - both Mary and John are buried in the Moulin Churchyard. 3.. John FORBES, baptised August 30th 1795 in Deiwnotand?, Parish Of Moulin - any ideas what the correct spelling of Deiwnotand? might be? 4.. Margaret FORBES, sister of John above, baptised August 29, 1792 in Cammoch - whereabouts is Cammoch? TIA Gaye Ruru, Rotorua, New Zealand.

    2. Ian Mackie
    3. Hi Nancy, My great grandfather John Mackie died at Trottick farm in the parish of Longforgan in 1868 and is buried in the churchyard at Abernyte. The church and graves are on the road leading east from the village, not the antique center! I have a booklet of MIs but no Irvine therein. "The present church bears the date 1673 on the West gable but it was renovated in 1736 and altered to its present cruciform shape in 1837." A google image search for Abernyte found mainly the antique center but also www.abernyte.org and http://www.inchture.com/Abernyte.html and www.kinnaird.net/perthmap.htm The Statistical Account of Scotland at http://stat-acc-scot.edina.ac.uk/stat-acc-scot/stat-acc-scot.asp has parish details 1791-1799 and 1845. For maps including the 1 to 25000 series use http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/getamap/ I have photographs of the church which I could scan for you. The MI booklet mentions another booklet "Olden Days in Abernyte- A Short History of a Small Perthshire Parish" The Tay Valley Family History Society http://www.tayvalleyfhs.org.uk/index.html lists P751 Abernyte, portrait of a Perthshire Village £2.50 which may or may not be the same thing. 3. Hi Gavin, Thank you for the inscriptions for the Gentles that you found. Jemima GENTLE was the great granddaughter of the David GENTLE and Christian MARTIN that I am looking for. Her husband James St Clair Haliburton was the registrar for the Cargill district until his death. I have copy of his death certificate, and his signature is on the entry above his death entry. His death was registered by the Assistant Registrar William McGREGOR. The Crictchton entry needs investigating. I am unaware of that surname at this stage. Can you send me copies of the photographs relevant to me. Thanks again, Gavin. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gavin Ramsay" <gavin@errol100.freeserve.co.uk> To: <PERTHSHIRE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, November 02, 2003 3:52 AM Subject: [PERTH] Cargill again > Hi All > > Earlier in the week I promised that I'd have a trip to Cargill for list members with relatives from there. Well, Cargill was looking lovely this morning. It is a beautiful sheltered spot, down off the main Perth-Blairgowrie road in a quiet area beside the river Tay. The graveyard has a very small ruin of an old church while the newer church a little way up the hill has been converted to residential use. 3. Until Civil Registration or thereabouts, the area round Kinloch Rannoch was part of the large parish of Fortingall so BDM's were included in Fortingall instead of being as they are now. Kinloch Rannoch is a parish in its own right these days. Judith Stichbury in NZ

    3. Hi All, especially Carolyn I've just been looking through yesterday's pictures and noticed that I missed a CRAIG memorial. Not your David CRAIK, but a John who would have been born in 1805, and from Burrelton (as 'Burreltan'). I wonder if I missed other Craigs in the cemetery? I may go back one day, but not for a while. Judy previously suggested that the 1841 and 1851 censuses may clear thing up for you - if you can't get access to them and no-one else steps in, give me a couple of weeks and I may find them for you. Here is the inscription: In memory of John Craig who died at Burreltan 15 July 1876 aged 71, also his wife Mary McFarlane who died 8 July 1891 aged 82 years, and their family John who died 7 Jan 1910 aged 58, James who died 16 Dec 1912 aged 70, Mary 27th Nov 1924 aged 71. cheers Gavin.

    1. [PERTH] Query Re: Canadian Churches for Scottish Emigrants
    2. In trying to complete links of my family back to their Scottish roots, I recently found the following marriage registration. >From microfilm MS248, Reel 1, Home District, "Marriage Registers of Canada West", page 231: Register of Marriages in communion with Knox's Church, Toronto, CW: "Andw McLaren & Helen Cameron / Bachelor & Spinster / both residing Towns. of Caledon / date of M: Jany 1 1851 / by License / Witnesses Alexr McLaren & James McLellan" Brothers Andrew and Alexander were born in Ontario. Their father was born in Perthshire, Scotland and their mother was born in Islay, Scotland. Helen was born in an unknown location in Scotland. Can anyone with knowledge of Ontario churches in mid 1800s can shed some light on this record? Specifically Since the bride, groom, at least one witness, and the parents of the groom were all residents of the Township of Caledon (at least 50 miles from Toronto), why would the wedding have been conducted in Toronto? Or does this entry signify only that there was some connection with Knox's? There was a church in the area (the famous "white church" was on the property adjacent to the properties owned by the two brothers and all the persons listed in this registration are buried there), but did Knox's have some sway over the Caledon area? What denomination was Knox's? (the McLarens are usually recorded as being Baptist) Any thoughts or advice welcome ..... Unless specifically stated otherwise in this message, there is no intentional attachment on this e-mail transmission. Ken Harrison North Vancouver, Canada

    3. If anyone in NZ comes up with information about James Menzies MacDonald I can tell them a bit about Lassintullich. My ancestors the DUFF family are buried at the Lassintullich cemetery which is almost opposite Lassintullich House where family members worked c1890-1905. sincerely, Judith Stichbury NZ
