    1. [PERTH] Margaret Marten and George McLeish - Nether Fordun Farm, Auchterarder.
    2. Bob and Brenda McLeish
    3. Below are two entries re the marriage of Margaret and George. The first one refers to £2.5s Scots collected and also £1.4s.... Can someone clarify for me please would this money have been paid by the Bride's parents? or the groom? How would the amount have been reached?- it seems a lot of money for 1732. I must admit I did not think to search for other marriage entries to compare amounts paid. Also curious about the banns - which says they were married on 17th Nov... was this an announcement of the wedding date or would the date have been entered after the marriage? "George McLeish and Maragret Marten both of this Parish. Listed to be proclaimed in order of marriage and this being ordered and regularly done they were married on the seventeenth of November seventeen hundred and thirty two years." NB: Margaret was the daughter of Andrew Marten and Elizabeth Friskin married in Tibbermore 7th March 1708. George was the son of John McLeish and Isabel McEwan (born about 1680). Margaret is buried in St MacKessog's Church Cemetery, Auchterarder.

    1. [PERTH] Alexander Dun of Bendochy
    2. Loftus Dun
    3. My ancestor, Alexander Dun was ordained in the Church of Scotland in Dundee in 1747, married Elizabeth Rankine in 1754, was minister at Bendochy for many years, dying in 1784. One of his daughters, Ann (born 1759), married Robert Henderson, a doctor in Coupar Angus, in 1779, and died in Dundee in 1809 after bearing thirteen children. One of those Henderson children, Elizabeth (born 1786), married Peter Arkley of Dunninald near Montrose, and they had five children before Peter died. The Dunninald mansion is still there. Alexander`s eldest son, William had two sons, William and Charles Denis. William (the younger) settled in Australia in 1821, and I am descended from him and Maria, his wife. I have been seeking information about Alexander, both whilst at Bendochy and especially earlier in regard to his birth and ancestry. Can anybody help, please? Loftus Dun

    2. Hello Listers Many thanks to all the Listers who responded to my recent query about possible sources for my Great-Grandfather John LOUGHRIDGE's reputed service in the Black Watch. I've tried to remember reply to each individually but if I've missed anyone, please accept my apologies and heartfelt thanks. I don't care what they say - I think the Internet is WONDERFUL! 3. Dingwall is a well-known name in Auckland, New Zealand. There is a large Dingwall Building. The Dingwall who came here was well off and I think was generous with his money for charity. If anyone is interested, I should say you would be able to find out more on a search engine. Google always seems to be efficient. Iris of Auckland, New Zealand

    1. [PERTH] Looking for Colin Campbell
    2. Mike Cuming
    3. Colin Campbell was born at Boghall farm, Balbeggie, Perthshire 28 November 1935. He attended school at Balbeggie but moved ,with his family, to Glasgow in March 1944 aged eight. We have found no trace of him beyond that date. It is likely the family moved back to the Perthshire area after the war as Colin's mother died in Rattray in 1990. Colin would now be aged 68 and could still be alive or have family living in Scotland. Any information might help us progress this frustrating family tree. Mike Cuming in Hamilton New Zealand

    2. chris/kaylene nicoll
    3. Looking for any information on Alexander and his family. He married Margaret BROWN on 30th June 1823 in Perth (I believe her family was from Dundee). I know they had one daughter Christina Wemyss YOUNG b. 18th April 1824. Alexander was inn keeper of the Thane Fife Inn (28 South Street) 1842, 1843 - 1844, then the Commercial Inn (8 South Street) 1845 -1846. When Christina married she and her husband Robert NICOL(L) lived in South and High Street. They had 4 children (1 set of twins) between 1843 - 1848 who all died before they were three years old. Can anyone help with which cemetery they may be buried in and maybe why they died so young. Many thanks Kaylene

    3. Ian wrote: <snip> > Fowlis Easter was in Perthshire in 1861, and in Angus in 2003?! Ian, The following, from GENUKI, might be of interest. "The county of Perth had four detached parts, viz.: (a.) The parishes of Culross and Tulliallan, adjoining the counties of Fife and Kinross; (b.) Part of the parish of Kippen, surrounded by the county of Stirling; and (c.) and (d.)Two detached parts of the parish of Caputh, each surrounded by the county of Forfar. It contained two detached parts of other counties, viz., part of the county of Forfar, consisting of a detached part of the parish of Kettins, and part of the county of Stirling, consisting of part of the parish of Logie. There were twelve parishes situated partly in the county of Perth and partly in other counties, viz., Abernethy, Alloa, Alyth, Arngask, Caputh, Coupar Angus, Forgandenny, Fossoway & Tulliebole, Kippen, Lecropt, Liff, Benvie & Invergowrie, and Logie. It was also found necessary to deal with the parish of Fowlis-Easter, which is for certain purposes united to the Forfarshire parish of Lundie. Taken from 'Scottish County & Parish Boundary Changes 1891' " I have people in Arnprior, Kippen and most records have it in Stirlingshire but some have it in Perthshire. This delayed me for a long time in finding where the family came from! All I initially had to go on was an 1851 Glasgow census record which listed a birthplace as an illegible word starting with 'A', Perthshire. Judy

Specifying birth year reduced these (and the system now seems to allow for age variation to account for early or late birthday in year of birth and early or late date of death in year of death). But still too many hits. Not thinking I specified county as Angus. 4 possible, one in Fowlis Easter! Alexander McKay died 21 Aug 1861 aged 1 year and 4 months in Fowlis Easter. Christina was the daughter of James PATERSON and Mary McNEILL, and was born in Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire, in 1849. She married James SMITH, son of William SMITH and Sarah WARDROP, at Wishaw, Lanarkshire, in 1875. 1. [PERTH] Black Watch - 1880's
    2. Hello I am new to this list and hope that you will forgive a posting possibly at the margin of list interest, (except that I believe that "The Black Watch" is almost synonymous with "Perthshire"!) I am trying to establish if my grandfather John LOUGHRIDGE did indeed (as family tradition has it) served in the Black Watch in the 1880's. This is supported to some extent by the information in the 1911 Census for Belfast that John's son William was born in 1886/7 in Malta. I have established from a regimental history that the 1st Battalion did serve in Malta from 1886 to 1889. I can find no record of John in the Scottish BMD records, so I rather think he may have been an Ulsterman. Does anyone know how likely it would have been for a non-Scot to have enlisted in the Black Watch which I believe traditionally recruited from Perthshire? Secondly, I would be grateful if someone could point me to a source of information on the Regiment in the 1880s. I have tried several times on Google to track down such a source but I always seem to end up with sites that want me to have a day out to the Black Watch Museum, book accommodation nearby or else has links which don't seem to access anything. Is there by chance any laddie (or even lady!) out there who knows about these things? ;-) Brian Loughridge in a gleek Coventry night.

    3. Hi, Does anyone recognise this family? They connect by marriage to my STEWART relations. I just found Christian FISHER living next to my STEWART family at Lionach in 1851 - with a bunch of maiden aunts. I know that there were a multitude of STEWARTS in this area, but this is becoming quite a set of coincidences. One slight problem - although I'm sure it's the right family - is that Janet STEWART would have been 47y at the birth of her last child! Maybe there was a later unbaptised Janet?
