Hello List, In case there are others on the list like myself, who have not seen the following site before, I thought that I would mention it. At www.theshipslist.com under the passenger lists there is a record of emigrants from Perthshire to New York 1803. There are also lists of emigrants on ships from Glasgow to St John 1815/16 which contain a number of passengers from Perthshire. I am sure that each immigrant (or maybe ships passenger) had to furnish biographical information - I don't think that in 1851 just anyone could walk into Court and request citizenship without furnishing background info. Before 1906, there was very little background information on Naturalization papers. They had to have 2 citizens as witnesses to their good character. They also had to have a 5 year period between filling their "declaration of intention" and the final papers. Ann

Dear Listers, After many years of searching I discovered that my grandfather had lived for many years in Glasgow. He died there in 1999. I received information from people who knew him by sending a letter to the local newspaper. Some of the received information puzzles me and maybe somebody on the list can enlighten me to the ins and outs of the Scottish legal system. I was told that my grandfather could not have a gravestone because no next of kin could be contacetd or identified. Is this statement correct? The other matter is that a person with the Stenhouse surname claiming to be my grandfather's cousin, claimed the remains of my grandfathers estate. (He did not buy a gravestone). The solicitor who handled my grandfathers estate said that he could not let me have the name of the person who claimed the remains of the estate. It just so happens that I have copies of pages from a family bible. It states there that my grandfathers only uncle died before he got married and therefore could not have had any children of his own. This means that a cousin with the Stenhouse surname could not have existed. Or am I wrong? Could any listers please advise me on the matters above. Thank you, Best Wishes, From, Michael in Norway. ------------------------------------------------- WebMail fra Tele2 http://www.tele2.no -------------------------------------------------

Guild website at www.one-name.org, you can search for the surname that members are researching and if you join for 12 pounds you get an email address to communicate with others who share your research with others. it also puts other email and web pages if you have them. their publications are full of interesting suggestions and a surname distribution map comes with membership. they have conferences but i can't attend since most are in the uk. BUT SOME OF YOU might be luckier? http://www.one-name.org/sems.html search for free for your surname...there could me a nut like me who collects all records for a surname. it ismore than likely that mine is a nut tree to start with. mary.schacht@one-name.org mary powrie schacht digging out from ice and snow in OREGON (oregon hazlnut)
