    1. [PERTH] FW: McKirdy Scot Death Indexes
    2. Yvonne Bean
    3. Hi all, Just to let you know that Wayne McKirdy has just released the 1857 Death Index for Lanark. The McKirdy Scottish Death Index is an index of death certificates between the years 1855-1875. Because Lanark is so large, it is being done 1 year at a time. In case you have not used these indexes before - the index contains all the info on a death certificate EXCEPT 1. Day & month & time of death 2. Address of deceased 3. Cause of Death 4. Date & name of Registrar Extras - number & registration district of the certificate & LDS film number where the certificate can be found. This & the other indexes can be obtained from http://www.genealogy.org.nz/ Looking at the site, they have not as yet added the above item, but it can be ordered. The different McKirdy indexes for Scotland can only be bought here. Look in the "What's New" column on the left. I do not have any connection to Wayne McKirdy or this product; I'm just an avid user. 2. Andrew Douglas
    3. Not sure if that's helpful, but certainly fascinating. A scan of the Black's entry for Douglas would be great. Have to admit, I'm a bit of a book person, and this kind of book in particular. I'd be interested in the others you mention, on first names and gaelic place names (I have Watson's book on Celtic place names, which I bought when trying to find a place call Bailechastail (Balcastle) or Bailteapail (Chapelton as it was also known as) - it wasn't of use for this purpose and I found the place by a chance encounter with a leaflet which I found at the small Borenich burial ground - but its a fascinating book despite my gaelic not being up to much - one day I intend to read it all the way through :) In fact, just having a look at that leaflet (or a scan of it) suggests that the burial ground was once owned by the Douglas family of Strathtummel - although the monument books don't list any Douglas' as being mentioned on tomb stones - where do i get a list of who is burried there? Crikey - how did I not spot this before? As for the one name study guild - where do I find that (in fact, I'll google it in a minute). It sounds an interesting place to start what will probably become a wider study of the Douglas name (there is, in fact, a two volume history of the Douglas' which I have found very difficult to read - I only have the first volume - it's hard going). I also love maps :) I'll check out the other sites too - thank you for pointing them out. Regards, Andrew. 1. [PERTH] Whistling in the wind...
    2. Andrew Douglas
    3. I've cross-posted this email to two lists, in case anyone might have an answer. I have been quite successful in tracing my Douglas ancestors back, to a wedding in 1761 of a James Douglas and a Christian McGregore, in the parish of Dull, Perthshire. I was recently in Dundee visiting the Tay Valley Family History Society, and they suggested that this was probably as far back as I am going to get - and I agree with this, although it doesn't stop me looking. I guess my first question is this. Douglas is essentially a name associated with the Borders - so what were my Douglas' doing all the way up in Dull and Blair Atholl - how would they have got there? OK, I know the Douglas' were Earls of Angus and that, in the history of the Douglas', by this time not a lot was happening (most of the exciting Douglas history ending in the C17?) - and Scotland isn't such a large place for people to move around. (Have I answered my own question). Secondly, in the ancestors i am fairly happy about, the spelling is either Douglas or Douglass - and I am happy that this is not an issue. However, I have found that the James Douglas mentioned about had three children - John, Margaret and Hellen. Now, they were born in Blair Atholl parish, and in the general naming conventions of the time, I might assume that James' parents were John and Hellen. Now, in Dull, I can find a John Duglass married to Hellen Stewart, in Dull, 1734, with a James being born to them in 1735. How likely is this to be the folks i am looking for - as opposed to the four or five other Douglas candidates born in Dull/Logirait/other Rannoch parishes? And how likely is the spelling 'Duglass' going to be the same as Douglas or Douglass? (I am guessing this is mostly down to who is righting the entries at the time - but why some many different spellings of the same name - I guess most of these ancestors would be illiterate anyway). Lastly - there are other Douglas' in Dull at around this time. Likely hood of them being related? It is by no means a common name in the area (although appearing in sufficient numbers in Dull and surrounding parishes for it to be a handful). I think my subject title sums up where I am at at the moment, and, short of either a miracle or a time machine (how great would that be), I am sure that anything I find going back now is pure conjecture, but it would be an interesting exercise. Regards and thanks, Andrew. PS James Douglas and Christian McGregore or McGrigore lived in Strathtummel, in an area marked on the map as Borenich. Now, I now roughly where they lived and there is a small burial plot, but this doesn't appear to go back quite far enough. Given age and last child born 1772, they would be dead around 1790 to 1810 probably - where would they have likely been buried? I have checked various memorial books - are there any lists of deaths that i might look at that aren't associated with memorials? (Again, i know the answer here is no, but I'll ask just the same).

    1. [PERTH] Robertson - Rannoch
    2. Minol Family
    3. Hello, Can anyone advise which parish I should be looking in for someone who is stated (on his headstone in 1906) to have been "of Rannoch, Scotland"? His name is James ROBERTSON and he was born in Auchtermuchty in 1830. He emigrated to Australia in late 1854 and I can find no trace of him in Scotland at all! I believe his parents died when he was about 2 and he was returned to family in Perthshire to be cared for. Hence, I suspect, the "of Rannoch", on his headstone. He had siblings Ann, Catherine, John, Elizabeth and Alexander. Parents were Alexander and Elizabeth (nee CHURCHILL) Any advice would be very gratefully received. I am hoping that the 1841 or 1851 Census records may be able to help me solve this mystery, but I need to be sure I'm looking in the right place. 2. Margaret, I'm a bit behind on my e-mail, so I don't know if you had any replies. I have no connection to the Pullar's, but I did find something which may be of interest, and help put you in the right direction. http://www.perthshirediary.com/html/day0919.html This tells some of the history of the Pullar's business, and gives several names. The company was started by John Pullar in 1824. I believe his wife may have been Mary Walker, but without resorting to ScotlandsPeople I can't prove that. One word of warning: Dundee has a famous forebear, one Adam Duncan, an Admiral, who gave the city of Dundee Camperdown Park. My great grandmother was called Margaret Duncan, and I was told quite some time ago that my Duncan ancestors were related to Admiral Duncan. I have been able to prove that they were NOT. Apparently almost every family in Dundee called Duncan perpertuates this myth, and Duncan is a very common name. Pullar on the other hand is not.... Good Luck Doreen Cuthbert

    1. [PERTH] ANDERSON
    2. Following back on Andersons in the Little Dunkeld area. Interested in making contact with anyone who is following Andersons back from 1800 and before, especially on the western side of this Parish. The OPR seem some thing of a nightmare and trying to make sense of the families most difficult. My line. James Anderson born Tomnagrew about 1785 who later in life was a spirit dealer in Perth and died 12th March 1873. Married to Jean Stewart and then Janet Campbell. Parents Donald Anderson and unknown Dowan. Known to be in Tomnagrew in 1815 Possibly the James born to Donald Anderson and Catherine Cowan June 1786 at Arnubree (Amulree ). Donald Anderson - Perhaps Donald born 29th August 1760 Bailiecragan with a marriage to Cathrine Cowan March 20th 1885 So many Andersons and possibilities and seeming conrtadictions in the OPR. 1. [PERTH] OT: a quote (I think!)
    2. Ursula
    3. Good afternoon to you all (on this blindingly bright, snowy day....) I've just been talking to a regular customer of mine in the library about family history (as he caught me sitting at the desk reading the latest issue of Family Tree <g>) and he was telling me about his research into his family. Anyway the long and short of it is, he has a number of letters written to his g-grandfather by his sister and she often includes the phrase "Bonnie man of a nar" sometimes with a second phrase "with your hands of white". This appears as though it might be a quote of some kind as it doesn't appear to make any sense in the context of the letters. However, neither he nor I, even with all the resources of a county library albeit one in East Anglia, can find it. Does anyone recognise it from anywhere? Does it pertain to some local Scottish folktale or legend? Is it a gaelic phrase? I'd be grateful for any suggestions of what it might mean or where else I could look Ta!
