Does anyone know what Stanley PER was like in c1800? I am trying to surmount a brick wall, and any background information might help. The brick wall follows ... My 3rd. Gt. grandmother Catherine MCLAREN was born Stanley PER c1808, daughter of William MCLAREN, distillery worker, and Catherine MCINTYRE. My 3rd. Gt. grandfather, Robert DUNBAR was born in England abt Nov 1807, the son of Robert DUNBAR, soldier (regiment unknown), and Isabella DIAMOND. If anyone recognises the names, or can suggest how to research 1800's Stanley, know of a distillery at Stanley c1808, or suggest the likelihood of as military establishment close to Stanley, or find the needle in a haystack of a Scottish regiment in England in 1807 - whew! please help. Al -- I have a fairly complete DEWAR family line connection back into Perthshire, but almost all of what I know is in Canada. There is one family that came to Canada in 1818 from Comrie area and I have had some trouble getting much info on them back on the old sod. Therefore with low expectations, I pass on this snippet of family tree and, should anything ring a bell with you, I'd love to hear it! This is the DEWAR family that were the hereditary keepers of the Coigerach or Quigrich and brought it to Canada in 1818 and sold it back (good Scots) to the Society of Antiquaries, National Museum of Scotland in 1876. Hello List, I found a marriage today for John STEWART and Katherine STEWART January 1790 in Fowlis Wester. John was of this parish and Katherine was of the parish of Don? (Dull) Our Duncan STEWART born about 1800 gives Crieff and Fortingall as birth places on 2 different census. On his death certifcate in Alloa the parents are given as John Stewart and Catherine -------. We do not know if this indicates her name was Stewart or the informant did not know. On the 1841 census Duncan is living in Crieff. Does anyone have Stewarts from Fowlis Wester who may recognize these Stewarts?? We can go no further until we can prove Duncan's parents. Thank you. Hi Holly, One of the names I am researching is BRYDIE in the Auchterarder/Blackford area. I have been in contact with another researcher who believes we are researching the same family, but no conclusive proof at this stage. In her line she has Margaret Brydie bap. 7 August 1754 Blairsaik(?), Blackford, PER; she married 10 December 1775 James HERDMAN (of Trinity Gask) in Blackford, PER. They are both buried in Trinity Gask churchyard where the MI says James was a "farmer at Borestone, afterwards at Stony Fold where he died the 20th April 1803 aged 63". My correspondent lists the known children as follows : i) Un-named female infant chr. 17 Nov 1776 (Elspet?) ii) Catherine chr. 9 Jun 1782 Trinity Gask; m. c1799 Stirling(?) William LAING iii) James chr. 23 May 1784 iv) Andrew chr. 21 May 1786 v) un-named infant chr. 31 Oct 1790 vi) Ann chr. 27 Mar 1796 The above mentioned MI also says that "three of their children are interred here two of whom died in early life and Elisabeth who died in the beginning of January 1808 aged 19 Also Janet who was interred at Perth January 1837 and Margaret at Edinburgh on 20th January 1848" The reverse of the MI says : James Herdman Junr who died 11th Feb 1861 aged 76 also Andrew Herdman who died 7th April 1861 aged 71 Anne Herdman died Jan ?? aged 22 years Isabell Herdman died ?? ?? aged 86 years Because this is not my family, I cannot confirm the research nor can I add anything more. It doesn't seem to tie in to your Herdman family at this stage but you may wish to keep it on file in case of a later connection. Hi Jane My gggrandmother, Mary Wilkie, married John Watterson 11 Dec 1826 at Perth, and in 1841 emigrated to New Zealand with their family and Mary's mother, Elizabeth Wilkie, widow of James Wilkie. Mary's brother, George Wilkie, married Ann Taylor 20 May 1825 in East Church Parish of Perth. They also emigrated to New Zealand in the early 1840s. After Ann's death, George went to Newburgh, Fife, SCT, and married Jane Wallace on 20 July 1863. Do you think there is any connection with your Wilkie and Taylor families? Hi all I'm researching the HERDMAN family, originally from Dunning and later Rattray. The earliest couple I've been able to identify were William HERDMAN, who married Margaret HERDMAN (maiden name same as her married name) in Dunning in 1713. Their son William (born 1724) was a farmer and brewer in Dunning. William married Christian DUNN / DUN on 23 December 1757 at Auchterarder and their eldest son, also named William, was born in Dunning in 1760. This William HERDMAN became the minister of Rattray. He married quite late in life to Sophia WALKER in 1820: he was 59 and she 34. Sophia was the daughter of the Rev. Andrew WALKER, minister of Collessie, Fife, and Sophia DUDDINGSTON. William and Sophia had four sons, and his will includes a line where he expresses his gratitude for her ability to "bring forth four sons" to follow him: 1) Rev. William HERDMAN (1821-1878), minister of Rattray after his father. William married firstly Ann FYFFE, by whom he had a son, William Robert Fyffe HERDMAN, who became the parish clerk in Rattray, but was found drowned in the River Ericht near the Bridge of Craighall on 28 November 1875. Rev. William married secondly Isabella CROCKETT, by whom he had a son Robert Newton HERDMAN. Robert Newton HERDMAN married Maude L. MACFARLANE in Edinburgh in 1884 and died in Moulin, Perthshire in 1919. I haven't any further details. 2) Rev. Andrew Walker HERDMAN (1822-1894), also minister of Rattray, presumably after his brother's death in 1878. He married Elizabeth CLOSE of London and spent many years in Canada, where his children were born. Known children were: Rev. James Chalmers HERDMAN (minister of Knox Presbyterian Church in Calgary, Alberta), Elisabeth R., Mary S., John Robert and Edward Gordon, all born in Canada. There may have been other children. After Andrew Walker HERDMAN's death, his widow lived in St John, New Brunswick, and later Belleville, Ontario, where she died on 21 February 1897. 3) Rev. James Chalmers HERDMAN (1825-1899), minister of St Mary's, Melrose, Roxburgh. He was named for his uncle James CHALMERS of Grangemount, Sheriff-Substitute of Perthshire and husband of Christian DUDDINGSTON. James married Mary KNOX of London and they had at least one daughter, Mary Sarah Sophia. James was a minister for a time in Calcutta, where his daughter married Rev. Alexander FERRIER, with whom she had three daughters before her death in 1894. 4) Robert HERDMAN (1828-1888), portrait artist and art historian. He originally set out to study divinity but found he was too busy making sketches of his tutors to continue. He married Emma Catherine ABBOTT and settled in Edinburgh, where they had a family of four sons. Rev. William HERDMAN died in Rattray on 23 September 1838, after which his widow and sons moved to St Andrews, Fife, where Sophia WALKER died on 11 September 1848. William HERDMAN's will nominated the Rev. Alexander WILSON, minister of Dunning, as an executor; Alexander WILSON was the son of William's sister Janet HERDMAN and her husband James WILSON. I have a fair amount of information about Robert HERDMAN the artist, but would be very interested to learn more about him or any of his family. The HERDMAN family tree is on-line at: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~hollyweb/herdman.htm Kind regards Holly McKenzie

Whoops - in my posting earlier today I gave James Anderson as born Tomnagrew about 1875 instead of 1785. Only 90 years earlier ! Dave Smith
Re posting interests. Following back on Andersons resident in Perth and previously Little Dunkeld (western part of parish). James Anderson born Tomnagrew about 1875 who later in life was a spirit dealer in Perth and finally a house factor. Died 12th March 1873 in Perth. Married to Jean Stewart and then Janet Campbell. James parents were Donald Anderson and unknown Dowan. Known to be in Tomnagrew untill 1815 when he married Jean Stewart of Perth. James had a son born Perth December 7th 1827 (my line) He may be the James born to Donald Anderson and Catherine Cowan in June 1786 at Amubree (Amulree) His father may be the Donald Anderson born Bailecragan August 1760 who married Catherine Cowan March 20th 1785 There are so many Andersons in Little Dunkeld and the OPR is confusing and seems contradictory in this period. Interested to make contact with others who have Andersons in Little Dunkeld 1700 -1850 and have made sense of the families there. David Smith
