    1. [PERTH] Nicholsons of Dunblane 1800s.
    2. Keith and Lilias Goddard
    3. William NICHOLSON was born in 1783 in Dunblane, Perthshire, Sct. to George NICHOLSON and Margaret BAILLIE. He was a soldier in the Argyll Fencibles 1798- 1800 then, while in Ireland, joined the Rifle Brigade, 2nd Batt. He served with that regiment till retirement as Barrack sergeant in 1824, seeing action in South America and The Penninsular War. He was evacuated after the Retreat from Corunna back to England then Ireland where he served the rest of his army career before returning to Scotland He married Elizabeth DEWAR about whom I know very little except that the family lived near Dublin and children were born there included Margaret, my Gt grandmother, b. 1828 and Robert Dilworth NICHOLSON b.1820. William retired as a Chelsea Pensioner to St. Ninians, Stirling. He died there in 1850. Elizabeth Dewar NICHOLSON died in 1859 in Bogside, Perth. I would be very interested to contact anyone researching this family. Lilias Goddard in Sydney, Australia.

    1. [PERTH] Re: William Miller WILSON (1826-1887)
    2. A. Cairnie
    3. I have just discovered a relative who was born at Limekilns, part of the parish of Dunfermline, and died at Powmill, Fassoway, Kinross. I understand this area was shared between Kinross and Perthshire, but his death certificate was from Kinross. He was a ship's captain and was married to Jane Baird. Any interest? Any monumental inscriptions? Alan Cairnie Perth, Ontario

    1. [PERTH] McQuatties in Blairgowrie
    2. david bethom
    3. Thanks for the information so far, I'll have to ask my mother but I think she remembers visiting Blairgowrie in the 1940's and there was a mention of a sweet shop. I'll also have a look on the link to the library. I've managed to get a few marriages from the Scots people website, but notice that the last census they do is 1871. Not knowing what records are available are there any earlier census's available. Dave

    1. [PERTH] Greenstyle Farm
    2. Hello List: I have finally learned that Greenstyle is not a village etc. but a farm in Strathdon. Is there anyone on list that can tell me how and where I can get information on this farm? My great grandfather, John Robertson was a coachman at this farm from maybe 1870 to 1880. There were five children born in Strathdon to this family and one died in 1874 there. The Family is found on the 1871 census. They are in Dundee in 1881. In the 1881 census several of the older children are no longer listed and would love to know if they have stayed on as employees of the Farm. Any help would be appreciated. Regards, Kaye Robertson Haughee

    1. [PERTH] Longforgan Pitfalls
    2. HI Ian, thanks for the information. Would you believe that someone who lives in a village does not know which Registration District it is in!!!!!! I bet 99.9% of the others don't know either! My excuse, we are in Perthshire, and have our own Registrar. When I read your email, it sent me scurrying to check my marriage certificate of all those years ago. Sure enough, Parish of Longforgan, Registration District 377, which is Dundee. Another excuse is the ongoing saga between Dundee and Perth as to who can claim Longforgan, for voting and Council Tax purposes!!!!! On a more serious note, there is a list of Parishes and Registrations on the GROS website. Regards, Dorothy (ashamed now to tell anyone she lives in Longforgan)

    1. [PERTH] re Longforgan Pitfall
    2. Ian Mackie
    3. Hi, Thanks to those who replied re Longforgan, Perthshire or Angus. I contacted scotlandspeople who replied as follows:- "It would not be wrong for Longforgan to be under either Dundee(Angus) or Perthshire. It is in the county of Perthshire geographically but in the Burgh of Dundee for registration purposes. Sorry this may cause difficulties. Best way is to search both if in doubt but it will be Angus/Dundee in most cases." Now we know Ian Melbourne

    1. [PERTH] Dunhill
    2. I have just received two Births for two of my grandfathers siblings and something added to where their parents were living when they were born. It has my great grandfather as age 23 of Dunhill and his wife Barbara Bell of 5 Mill Street, Perth. On the marriage certificate information that I had before it had the usual residence of John Robertson as Birnam, Dunkeld, His wife's address is still 5 Mill Street, Perth. Can someone help me with where Dunhill is? Thanks in advance Kaye
