Sarah - I have a relation up in Aberdeen who wrote such a letter for his descendants in 1904. You're very lucky - it's a great treasure! In Perthshire I have some DEWAR ancestors (who hide VERY well!) and I was wondering if Catherine detailed any of that ancestry as well. Mine were primarily in the area around Comrie / Killin. Hello Listers I would appreciate information regarding the location/name of any privately owned cemeteries in Perth. The family I am researching are not buried in any of the Perthshire Council graveyards. Does anyone know where I might find the (Lair records) for private graveyards? I believe these particular records are not kept at the Perth Cemetery Office. Best regards, Patricia.
Patrick and Perthshire Mailing List While on the McLAREN name, I thought I'd list my McLAREN connections here, as it is a while since I have put them forward. In 1865, Catherine McLAREN nee DEWAR (1789 - 1886) wrote down her ancestry for her grandson. [If only all branches of my family had done so!] Her notes state that her father-in-law was Duncan McLAREN from Strathbraan and that he married a Margaret FORBES. The probable marriage record reads: "Kettins, county of Forfar, OPR Marriages 1774, 3 Duncan McLaren and Margaret Forbes both in this parish were proclaimed pro Feb 20th, pro 2nd, February 27th pro 3rd March 6th and married March 10th." The couple had four children, Robert, Alexander, James and "Mrs McLAREN , Balbeggie" Robert married Catherine DEWAR - "Kinfauns, 1808 Feb 27th Robert McLAREN in this parish and Katherine DEWAR were married" And again from Catherine's 1865 notes - "Robert was born at Fernlands (St. Martins ph) about 1< m. from Balbeggie; died 29/8/64. [He] was foreman at Mr. WALKER's, near Collace; then at Montague (Balbeggie); then overseer on a farm near Broughty Ferry; then gardener at Lord GRAYs, Kinfauns Castle; then at Wester Talspeddie; Airntully; and East Mains of Rossie, near Montrose." Robert McLAREN's death record reads: Death certificate reads: Robert McLAREN , Farmer, (married to Catherine DEWAR); died Aug 29th, 1864; 1h.30m. P.M.; New Scone, Parish of Scone; male aged 85 years; father Duncan McLAREN, Farmer, (Deceased); mother Margaret McLAREN, MS FORBES (Deceased); cause of death, Disease of the heart, as certified by David H Stirling, MD; informant James McLAREN, son, Whitefield, Parish of Dron; registered August 31st, Gt Scone, William Keay, Registrar. And the gravestone in the old churchyard in Scone reads: To the memory of Robert McLAREN who died 29 Aug 1884 aged 85, and his wife Catherine DEWAR who died 25 Dec 1886 aged 97; also their daughter Elizabeth died 11 Oct 1863 aged 44; also their son Andrew McLAREN who died 21 Jan 1904 aged 94, also his wife Jane MILLER died 15 Oct 1888 aged 65, and Robert their only son who died at Melbourne 28 Jan 1935 aged 78; their daughters Elizabeth Anne died 11 Feb 1941 aged 81 and Isabella Mary died 5 Jun 1942 aged 89. Margaret I have the book "Pullars of Perth", not sure if you do. It states that John Pullar married Isabella Ower in April 1773, but does not go further back than that. IGI has a John Pullar married to an Isobel Oure at Scone, Perth 16/1/1773 - M 113944. If you get the marriage details from Scotlandspeople it may give you info on their parents or address, which may help. Regards Heather J
Margaret, This might be a specific baking firm, or a firm owned by a Mr Baker, but I am wondering whether it might instead be something to do with the Trades Guild (like London's Worshipful Company of Bakers) i.e. the Incorporation of the Bakers of Dundee. There is an interesting site about the Nine Incorporated Trades of Dundee at: http://www.standrewschurch.btinternet.co.uk/page12.html with the section on the Dundee Bakers (or Baxters) at: http://www.standrewschurch.btinternet.co.uk/page31.html Judy

Margaret, I assume we're talking about the family of Charles Pullar and Janet Scletter/Sclater here. I see from the IGI online that their children are recorded as - JOSEPH PULLAR c. 08 JUN 1803 Caputh ANDREW PULLAR c. 13 JAN 1805 Caputh ELSPIT PULLAR c. 16 OCT 1806 Caputh JOHN PULLAR b. 17 JUL 1808 c. 24 JUL 1808 Caputh JANET PULLAR b. 01 NOV 1810 c. 04 NOV 1810 Caputh WILLIAM PULLAR b. 17 MAR 1813 c. 21 MAR 1813 Caputh ELISABETH PULLAR b. 29 JAN 1818 c. 15 FEB 1818 Caputh There's a fair sized gap between William b. 1813 and Elizabeth b. 1818 that James would fit into very nicely, matching up with what the census says of him. My first thought is that there is no reason to think that James is not Charles's son. There are many reasons as to why his birth does not appear in the IGI. Have you checked the parish register for any sign of James? Another possibility could be that in the census it is actually another son misnamed as James who is listed there. The fact that James is mentioned in Charles's will suggests that he is likely to be a fairly close friend or relative. He could be a nephew. Although the fact that Charles doesn't specifically say James is his son doesn't mean anything in itself. I still think it likely that James is Charles's son. The only way to prove it is to get James's death certificate. See www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk for that. Hope this helps. I was able to confirm yesterday by viewing the Will of CHARLES PULLAR that he is indeed my gggrandfather. It was sooooooo exciting !!!!!!!!! In the Will, he referred to his son JOSEPH PULLAR, Farmer of Ladenford. Also his sons ANDREW, JOHN and WILLIAM Farmers in Ashton-in-Makerfield Lancashire. My new mystery now is JAMES. He is mentioned in the Will but not referred to as son.???? Hi, Nine wells is a name given to two locations. One in the Western side of Dundee in the Liff & Benvie, Forfarshire or Angus Parish. The Ninewells hospital is locate here today and is a tiny burgh of Dundee. The town just to the West is Invergowrie. Ninewells, Fife is an area between Abernethy and Newburgh. It is just over the line in Fife closer to Newburgh and up on a bluff looking over the River Tay. It really is a historical location of the McDuff Cross. This cross is gone to day destroyed during the Reformation, only the stone base and a few stones in a ring to protect it from farming tractors. Near it were wells, nine in all, that were part of the cross legend. There is a farm there today owned by the Bairds who also operate a B&B nwfarm@premier.co.uk. . It's name really does not indicate any village other than naming the location of the wells and site ot the cross, but one may have been born or living on the farm land there in the mid 1800's and used this name to locate it. Before about 1886 the Fife/Perth border was different in this area and you might have to look at censuses for both counties before then. Sláinte, John H.
