    1. Re: [PERTH] Ferguson/McIntyre
    2. In my ancestry, I have a John Stewart who married ? Ferguson (don't know the 1st name). Both had died before Nov 1878. To them was born a son, James Stewart, in 1805 or 1806 at Dowally, Perthshire. On August 20, 1829 at Caputh, James married Isobel Keay (b 1800, Caputh). To them were born 6 children, the eldest of which was Janet Fenwick Stewart born on February 12, 1830 at Caputh. Janet is my great grandmother. I'd love to hear from anyone who may be related to any of the above. 2. In my family I have a William Stewart married to a Catherine Scrimgeour. Who on March 27, 1796 had a son, Donald Stewart, at Logierait in Perthshire. Donald married Jean/Jane McNaughton (b 1792 at Dowally) on September 11, 1823 at Dowally. To them were born 6 children. The eldest was John Alexander Stewart, who was born on February 14, 1824. John is my great grandfather. I wonder at some point if our families are connected. I'll look forward to hearing from you. Hi John, I can't add much to your friend's family but I found the following on the microfiche " McKirdy Index to Deaths in the Statutory Registers 1855-1875 : Kinross-shire" Janet KIRK, died aged 65 (the sister of Mary Kirk who married Alexander Penny) Spouse : Alexander NICOL, farmer Father : John KIRK, labourer, deceased Mother : Mary BAIN, deceased Parish : Orwell Entry No. : 0033 Year : 1868 LDS Film No. : 0363258 and this is her husband : Alexander NICOL, farmer, died aged 73 Widower of Janet KIRK Father : William NICOL, farmer, deceased Mother : Magdaline MONCREIFF, deceased Parish : Orwell Entry No. : 0001 Year : 1869 LDS Film No. : 0384141 Informant : John NICOL, son of Alexander NICOL and here is a daughter of the above couple : Mary NICOL, died aged 50 Spouse : Andrew STARK, railway porter Father : Alexander NICOL, farmer, deceased Mother : Janet KIRK, deceased Parish : Kinross Entry No. : 0022 Year : 1872 LDS Film No. : 0300318 I think there are some STARK children if you would like them, but they may be too far removed from the PENNY line to be of interest at this time. There are no entries on the fiche at all for the name PENNY although there are a few for the variant spelling PENNIE, but none of these are in Fossoway. 3. Atholl, Unfortunately the 1881 census, which I have here on CD, does not give proper place names for the households in the parish of Dowally. I know who was living and farming at Dalcapon in 1881. This was Donald Ferguson & family (his mother was a Butter, hence my interest). Their entry is simply given the address "Farmhouse". However, from a somewhat faulty memory, at the time you are researching I seem to recall that the parish boundary ran through the centre of Stanley, the northern part of the village being in Auchtergaven Parish and the southern half in Redgorton Parish. Hope this helps ! 3. Hello Barb A few of my "Penny" relatives were also born in Miltons Bog and the only reference to it is part of Auchterarder to the right on the map at old maps, just Milton. If you go to Perthshire, Auchterarder and then enlarge the image Milton was by the Mill Leach so might be classed as a bog! http://www.old-maps.co.uk

    3. One problem you are going to find with this family is that Alexander and two of his siblings appear in baptism records as PEDDIE - as does the marriage of his father, also Alexander, to Helen Coventry. The remainder of Alexander's siblings are baptised as PENNIE All this takes place in Tulliallan Both PEDDIE and PENNY ar not uncommon in the immediate area As yet I have not attempted to trace all lines of descent to see what form evolved If most lines evolved as PENNY then we must accept that - it may have gone in BOTH directions !! 1. Milton's Bog, Auchterarder?
    2. Barb Foelsch
    3. I have an old family Bible where family births, deaths, etc. are recorded. My grandfather's great-grandmother (easier to say that way than to figure out how many "greats" she is to me!) is recorded as having been born in 1835 in Milton's Bog, Auchterarder. That is also where her father records his place of residence when he first received the Bible a few years before that. Does anyone know what Milton's Bog is? Is it a hamlet, or a farm? Any help would be greatly appreciated! (I know her baptism was recorded in Dunblane if that helps at all.) Her name is Jean/Jane MacFarlane, her father is William MacFarlane and mother Isabella Ferguson. The family immigrated to Delaware County, New York USA sometime around 1840 (they were in NY state for the 1840 census) and Isabella died sometime around 1840 as well. I have more details if anyone thinks they have links to this family. Thank you! _________________________________________________________________ Check out MSN PC Safety & Security to help ensure your PC is protected and safe. http://specials.msn.com/msn/security.asp

    1. Monumental Inscriptions Lookup
    2. I've been reading this forum with interest since the subject of monumental inscriptions came up. My great-grandfather, Robert Robertson, b. 1826 in Forteviot, leased Middle Third Farm, on Tullebardine Road, at the edge of Auchterarder/Blackford, from about 1861 on. We know he died in a farming accident sometime between 1883 and 1886, but I have been unable to locate a death certificate in Scottish archives (www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk). I have photos of him, of the farm, and even his original marriage certificate in my possession. He appears in the 1881 census for Middle Third. After his death, his widow Elizabeth Drummond and their children emigrated to the US and Canada. I believe he is buried in either Blackford or Auchterarder cemeteries (although there's a slight chance he may have been buried in Forteviot or Edinburgh). The monument, if found, will likely give the date of his death. Can I look this up on online archives? Is there someone who can do the lookup for me? It would clear up one of the big mysteries in our family. Thanks! ---Bob (Robert Drummond) Robertson Napa Valley, California

    1. Re: [PERTH] John Robertson from Killin area/Tomocrocher
    2. jim, i bought 2 CDs of Scottish history from SCRAN and I learned that because of mechanization in the mid 1850s, on farms fewer men were men were needed...and the scots didn't own their land they rented. as lease length grew shorter, and it was risky to put any profits into improvements if you didn't own the land, but if you could loose the land with any failed harvest, or illness/family hardship/lowland clearances...... Each time a son wanted to marry he would have to look for land to rent but none near his parent was available and their land couldn't be subdivided hand loom weavers were forced out by power looms (mechanization) better to emigrate to a place like Canada....where they could own lands and old skills were needed..... mechanization was needed only in the coastal cities in the U.S., South Africa and Australia so skilled workers went there and others headed for the frontier regions. The CDs taught me more about living conditions in an hour than several books on history...I highly recomend them. Killin is very pretty, my great grandmother Annie McPhail was born there... I bought a nice book on the village history while there http://www.scran.ac.uk/ Mary
