Do you have any record of the following persons? Alexander (or James - some confusion here) McLaren, born before 1750 in Callander; married 17 Dec 1768 in Kilmadock to Elizabeth (or Janet - more confusion) Ferguson, also born in Callander before 1750. Only one known child: James McLaren born 9 Sep 1779 in Callander, married in Ontario, Canada (or possibly in USA) between 1810 and 1818 to Mary McNabb (born in Islay in 1794). 2. I have bent little fingers i.e. overlappping the ring fingers on both hands my eldest daughter has the the same but hers are also bent towards the palm and have been since birth, she is now 26yrs old. She has the classic Celtic colouring of Tishan hair and pale skin. I and my three children have all all discovered that we have extremely small thumbs, reaching just above the knuckle. My g.g.grandfather came from the Perth area, he was a John Kennedy, a shepherd and i have hit on a rather common name with no leads. Barbara

    3. Hi Malcolm I spotted a couple of possible connections among your interests. I have: David KENNEDY bapt 3 Feb 1809, Dull; 1851 Census says born Crieff, though 1861 has Dull. His parents were David KENNEDY and Elizabeth RUTHERFORD. David (son)'s wife was Ann CAMPBELL bapt 10 Aug 1806 Fowlis Wester, daughter of Archibald CAMPBELL and Barbara CAMPBELL; again, 1851 Census says born Crieff, but later ones say Fowlis Wester. When Archibald and Barbara married in 1792, he was of Fortingall and she was of Logierait, although Ann's marriage entry (1828) describes Archibald as a farmer (deceased) of Monzie. David and Ann married in 1828 in Edinburgh, and I know of 9 children. The first five were born in Crieff, and the other four in Cambusnethan LKS. David died in 1875, and after that Ann lived with her daughter Barbara in Muthill until her death in 1885. Barbara was the second wife of Duncan CAMPBELL, a blacksmith in Bennybeg, Muthill. I'd be interested to hear if this connects. 3. Hi, I have a request but unfortunately I don't have any fixed information about where the family were living in 1851... I am looking for: William PATON - he married in 1831 so presume he would be at least 40yrs of age and no idea where he was born Elizabeth/Betty (nee POWRIE) his wife I believe may be 54yrs of age - which is perhaps a guide for Williams age and born Perthshire or Kettins, Forfarshire? Issue that I know of: Alexander PATON - born 1831 Elizabeth - born Dec 1832 James - born May 1835 Isabella Low(e) born May 1837 and perhaps a son William The children were all christened in Collace (1st two) and St Martin for James and Isabella. Sorry that I haven't got particularly good information to go on.... Many thanks, in anticipation Pam ----- Original Message ----- From: Jim Small <jesmall@neb.rr.com> To: <PERTHSHIRE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, May 02, 2004 12:37 AM Subject: Re: [PERTH] 1851 Census Indices held > heather j WILLIAMS wrote: > > >I have the following 1851 Perthshire 1851 Census Indices and will do look-ups: - > > > >Clunie > >Longforgan (His son, William, was christened on 04 Apr 1819 at Long Gorgan?) > > > > > > I would welcome any information regarding > > Patrick Peter SMALL > b: 30 Jan 1782 in Clunie, Perthshire, Scotland > d: 28 Dec 1866 in Mill Hill Farm, Perthshire, Scotland > > Thank you! > Jim Small > http://www.angelfire.com/ia/smallclan > > > ==== PERTHSHIRE Mailing List ==== > -------------------------------------------------- > Remember to change the subject line to reflect > YOUR message to the list. > http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/SCT/PERTHSHIRE.html > -------------------------------------------------- > >

    3. Ken, The Mc and Mac variations are just a myth! Purely down to how good someone was at spelling in an age when most people with such names were Gaelic speakers let alone able to read and write in English and once a family adopted one spelling or the other, they just stuck to it. You will often see the same person with both spellings and others at varying times in his/her life. The correct spelling of any name is always that used by the Clan chief or head of family if not a clan but there are no hard and fast rules. Cheers Mark John M.
