    1. Caledonian Challenge 2004 (or Highland Madness & Midges)
    2. Dear fellow listers, Last June I completed 32 miles of this event, and am hoping to complete the challenge this year, in a charity walk for the Scottish Community Foundation, who organise the funding of social projects in Scotland. Walking from Fort William down to Ardlui on Loch Lomond, I will attempt to complete 54 miles of the West Highland Way, a long distance footpath via Glen Nevis, Glencoe and Rannoch Moor See the walk web site at www.caledonianchallenge.co.uk/ and the charity site www.scottishcomfound.org.uk for more details I wondered if any of you with family connections to Scotland would be willing to sponsor me for this very worthwhile cause. Hoping you can do something to help - if so please contact me off-list to arrange. 3. Hi, A list of Charge of the Light Brigade casualties can be found at http://www.capefam.freeserve.co.uk/lightbrig.htm but no Lt. Col. Robertson. Lt. Col. is a reasonably senior rank commonly in command of a regiment. Casualties and regimental histories would certainly record careers of such, somewhewe! There is a Crimea War Research Society at http://www.crimeanwar.org/ which might help. > > --- CEHAUGHEE@aol.com wrote: > > Hello List: Can anyone help me find a listing of > > officers from Scottish > > regiments in the Crimean War? I have copied their latest online newsletter below as a for-instance. It might be worth looking to see if your Robertson features in any army records shortly before the Crimea. 2. Hello List: I wanted to thank all who have come forth with places to go for the Crimean War and especially for the Charge of the Light Brigade. I now know that there was not a Lt. Col. Robertson in that charge at least that died. I will continue to look for other officers who died in other battles of the Crimean War. I am not at all convinced of this story that my brother has told me. This story all revolves around a grandfathers clock that my grandfather had that was supposedly Lt. Col.'s clock that was his uncles. Oh the questions one could ask if we had been doing genealogy all those years ago. Thanks again and I will keep on it. Kaye

    3. I m looking for any descendants of my gggrandparents, John Watterson, probably bap 14 April 1803 at Dovecoteland, Perth, and Mary Wilkie born c1807. Mary's father was James Wilkie, weaver of Shuttlefield, SCT., who married 11 Dec 1826 Elizabeth Johnston, dau of John Johnston, shipsmaster of Shuttlefield. John Watterson's parents were probably James Watterson and Isobel Kirk. Other children recorded to this couple were Robert, bap 24 March 1793 in Wellshill Isobel bap 8 March 1795 in Dovecoteland James bap 29 Oct 1797 in Dovecoteland George bap 23 Feb 1800 in Few. I cannot find the name of Elizabeth Johnston's mother. Her father was said to trade with Spain and some say he may have married a Spanish woman. My gt uncle had a portrait of a Spanish woman hanging in his hall in the early 1900s but I cannot find out who she was. John and Mary Watterson and their children emigrated to New Zealand, arriving there 17 March 1841 on the "Lady Nugent". In New Zealand John signed a document with one T by mistake so registered his name as Waterson, sometimes spelt with two Ts. I would be very interested to hear from anyone with any information re this family. Iris from Auckland, New Zealand

    3. Recently joined, posting my first message. Have checked the List Archives and don't find a suitable subject for Alexander CAIRNS, who died aboard the Titanic when it sank April 15, 1912. He was a servant in First Class. A family story said my Grandmother, Agnes BRYDEN was engaged to a man named 'Alex' who died when the Titanic sank. I always thought this to be only that.....a family story. Recently, I've received a picture of this man and understand a postcard exists that he sent to Agnes. My Aunt is now trying to find this postcard which she safely tucked away for safekeeping. I want to see the Postmark for a date and see if he signed his full name. They were both residing in Scotland in 1912. While she's looking for the card, I thought I'd ask this List if anyone knows of this Alexander CAIRNS or other family. He was born Alexander Milne CAIRNS on April 19, 1883 in Kinfauns, Perthshire, Scotland to Wm CAIRNS & Margaret MILNE. Books published on the Titanic say the Alexander CAIRNS who died was the son of a Wm and a Margaret and that his middle initial was indeed M, and that he was 28 at his death. So far, so good. Have used the IGI to find siblings of Alexander, seems there were quite a few ! If current family can be found, they should know of the Titanic death, that's hardly a story to be kept a secret. The Archives of this list don't mention the word Titanic in any year. Anyone know of a way I can further look for this family ? Hopefully newspaper accounts would have mentioned a native lad who died on the infamous ship. Is anyone on this List a local to Perthshire ? 1. Rev. John Rodger Revisited - was Re: [PERTH] RODGERS family in Peathills, Perthshire
    2. L. D. Rodger
    3. Hello again, Rose! Your message re-kindled an interest in that branch of the family, not having previously resolved what you seek. I do know that the Rodger home of Peathills is one of many farmed by the Rodger family of Strathearn. While located in the geo-political parish of Crieff, it is actually in the religious parish of Monzie whence I descend. Assembling the genealogy of the Strathearn Rodger, I have a "spaghetti factory" of paperwork strewn about the house! It appears, and remember just that, it only appears, that Rev. John Rodger was born as John Rogie, christened 25 Dec 1737 in Crieff, actually Monzie. The son of Patrick Rogie and Rachel Sharp, John's siblings were Patrick, c. 21 Sep 1935, William c. 12 Jun 1748, Jean (alias Jane) c. 12 Aug 1750, and Grisel c. 16 Dec. 1753. As for his marriage to Elizabeth Blackwood, some confusion comes from some of the Rodger name marrying Elizabeth Blackwell. But dates do not match and there is not obvious record of John and Elizabeth Blackwood. I suspect they could easily have married aboard ship to the U.S. or prior to departure. While it may seem difficult to accept a minister of the church to be married in other than a religious house, exceptions could be considered when you ponder the situations of each of the couple. There is a possibility William married an Ogilvy, another family long associated with the Rodger of Strathearn. Also that Jane, alias Jean, married David Crawford, another long associated family. This is off the top of my head, though. Now for William living in Crieff, this could well have been the town of Crieff as Alexander and William had homes beside each other in 1822. And ... Isabel married James McAinsh 17 May 1772 in Crieff. But I am not certain whether this is in the Village, or in the geo-political parish. As an aside, the Reformation took the better part of one hundred years to get into the Highlands and thus the Roman Catholic Church still maintained a hold into the 1800's. If not openly, secretively. This as evidenced by signifying the death of a parishioner in the church records by following their name with a cross, a practice still used within, as far as I know, the Roman Catholic Church. From this comes a variant of our Rodger family as Rogert and Rodgert which are known family members less the cross, or "t". This cross was transcribed as a "t" following the name by those doing the work of the LDS IGI. - Or so I strongly believe. Anyway. Put that one in as another variant to look for when you try to assemble any of the Rodger lines. Other variants exist but are dependent on the period in history you are searching. Some not even close to the name! With that, I hope this helps a little. Let me know, - and if you can offer any more which you think would be of use to the Clan. If the letter you refer to has been viewed by yourself, we surely would love to add a copy of it to the records of the Clan. One last, - I believe there is one other branch of the family descended of the Strathearn Rodger. One Barbara Sturrock if memory (only, and little of that!), serves me. I can dig it out and offer more if you have the interest. I believe she was related to Rev. John. Then again, maybe it was you and I have the old correspondence confused. Just too old! With that, d o n e!
