Does anyone have information on my GGGG Grandfather John Peddie, father of Elizabeth Peddie. Elizabeth was born in 1792 Little Dunkeld Parish. She married William Gow in 1827. Thank you, Larry Eder Larry leder2@charter.net
Are there any members of the Proudfoot family still residing in Methven today and if so, how can I get in touch with them? My g4gfather, Lawrence Proudfoot, was born there in 1743, married and was widowered there 3 times, came to New York City @ 1775 and married there in 1779. I am looking for any connections still living in Scotland - Thanks, Judy Schreiber Valdosta, GA, USA
Cumming, Steven or Stiven, Kinloch, Sword, Gorrie families from Little Dunkeld/Strath Bran to Methven/Crieff. Yes Sheila your mail is being received in New Zealand, any way. The above are my interests from 1750-1870, then Alexander Cumming came to NZ in about 1870. No-one seems to reply on this list!! I wonder why. Richard Poole (NZ) Mail from Sheila: I haven't received any mail either, nor has the query I sent out come here. Sheila in Missouri
Everyone - this particular list server at Rootsweb has been acting up. Actually, the mail shouldn't be 'lost', just delayed. Here is the latest 'word' on the server: Mail Lists: 2004-07-29 Additional list server in place, some lists still offline RootsWeb today brought on-line an additional mailing list server after an extensive testing phase. This server has had about half the mailing lists from our problematic list server moved onto it and is now fully operational. We will soon start to feed the backlogged mail through. The problematic list server will be undergoing a rebuild and then load testing, before the data and functionality are restored. Mail for these lists will continue to be held over until the server is functional. This may be a couple of days, the exact time period is currently unestablished. You can always check the archives to see if the post went through to the list, but some how you didn't get a copy. http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/PERTHSHIRE/ Things will perk up here soon enough. Last week I sent out a query to this list about places I couldn't find -- but now I've found them!!! (The query never seemed to get through, for some strange electronic reason.) At any rate, this is a cautionary tale for all researchers. My 4-great grandmother, Christian McGRIGOR, apparently lived "in Hallick" in Fortingall parish, when she married Archibald MENZIES in 1761. At least, that's what the official excerpt from GROS said some years ago. I never could find this mysterious place, though we finally thought the minister must have meant "Aulich," where there were indeed MacGregors. This past week I used Scotlandspeople and decided to go for Christian's marriage again. This time, I received a copy of the original handwritten page. And, yes, the place does look like "Hallick." But further down the same page, there's a marriage for another couple in what is obviously the same place. And THIS time the word comes out "Slattich." Ta-da!!!! The internet couldn't find this place anywhere, but my trusty Landranger map showed me "Slatich" in Glenlyon, just down the road from Innerwick, where all the family later lived. Only goes to show that the folks at GROS are just as fallible as the rest of us. Now, because of naming patterns, I think that maybe Christian McGrigor's parents must have been Duncan McGREGOR and Janet McLAURIN in Camserney, near where the River Lyon joins the River Tay. They had a daughter named Christian who was baptised 28 July 1736 in Dull parish. Is anyone else researching this family?? If so, I'd love to hear from you. Sheila in Missouri

Malcolm - yes, but not quite. That feels very close to my family. I have a pile of DEWAR and McNIE and some FERGUSON, STEWART and others who came from Perthshire to Ontario Canada in the time frame 1810-1825. They're all mixed up and inter-married till you can't tell your Archibald from your Alexander! I do not find in my data the exact families you refer to, but we're close. If you've "lost" some people in Perthshire, perhaps they jumped the pond? Regards - Glen C. Hello, My name is Lorraine and although I've been researching my family for years, I'm the new kid on the block when it comes to the name STODDART and the county of Perth. I THINK I've found my gggrandfather's family on the 1841 census for St. Cuthburts (Midlothian). 1841 St. Andrews - Civil Parish: St. Cuthburts 2 Drummond Street FRASER, Daniel M 40 Shoemaker Midlothian FRASER, Elizabeth F 30 Outside Census County (1841) FRASER, Mary F 12 Midlothian FRASER, Andrew M 10 Midlothian FRASER, Daniel M 7 Midlothian FRASER, James M 5 Midlothian FRASER, Christina F 2 Midlothian I don't know 100% that this is my family, but I'm becoming more certain. My gggrandfather's age fits perfectly and, if they rounded the adults ages up/down, then Daniel and Elizabeth's ages fit perfectly too. I THINK my ggggrandmother's maiden name was Elizabeth STODDART. I found a marriage between a Daniel FRASER and an Elizabeth STODDART on the 11th of June 1827 St. Cuthburts, Edinburgh. Daniel FRASER and Elizabeth STODDART definitely had a daughter Christina Thompson FRASER born 14 June 1839 died 31 July 1907. Elizabeth STODDARTs father was James STODDART. What I'm trying to find out is if this Elizabeth STODDART was born in Perth. My ggggrandmother, Elizabeth, said on the 1871 UK census that she was born in Perth. If anyone recognizes any of these names, I'd LOVE to hear from you. If anyone can help or point me in the right direction, so I can confirm this Elizabeth or an Elizabeth STODDART dau. of James STODDART was born in Perth I'd be most grateful. Thanks Much and Happy Hunting, Lorraine (A Brit living in Pennsylvania USA) I have the 1841 census for Duddingston & Portobello if I can be of any help to anyone. I also have the 1851 for England's Devon, Warwick and Norfolk Counties, along with the British VRI and 1881 census CDs.
Thank you for the details of the Ulster Covenanters. I also have found a lot of useful stuff which I might not otherwise have done. Dave Smith
Hello All The original of this letter was sent to Robert Wilkie who replied to me in Sept. 2000 regarding the above matter.Robert I have not seen you on the list lately but if you are or if anyone else knows where you are, please contact me. Douglas
Hi all, For all those with Protestant ancestors from Ulster, a list of all those who signed the Ulster Covenant in 1912 against the advent of Home Rule for Ireland can be found at http://www.proni.gov.uk/ulstercovenantsearch/index.asp . As well as the original signatures, the lists state where people signed the document and often lists their home addresses. It also includes signatories from Scotland, England and Canada. There were about half a million signatures collected, so it's not a bad census substitute - I've already found three great grandparents and one great great grandparent, and I've only been on it for two hours! Chris
Still in need of information on: George Gardiner m. Janet Borrowdale c.1880. son Martin in Australia by 1914.
