Hi I was looking at the 1901 census for Moulin this morning and notes a ? Scotland as proprietor of Scotland's Hotel. I'll have another look tomorrow and check it out properly. In Colin Liddell's book "Heritage of a Highland District" he says that Scotland's Hotel was formerly the Star Inn established in 1845. John Scotland took it over in 1880. It is the oldest larger hotel in Pitlochry. Hope this is of interest Kay ----- Original Message ----- From: "ksteel" <ksteel@optonline.net> To: <PERTHSHIRE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, August 16, 2004 8:03 PM Subject: Scotland's Hotel, Pitlochry > Hello Listers! > I was wondering if anyone on the list might be familiar with the Scotland's Hotel in Pitlochry? Karen, Here he is in 1881, so it was in existence by then. He however was not a local. Pitlochry grew from a timy hamlet into a flourishing town during the latter half of the 19th century, attracting in people from all over. From the children's ages, I guess he arrived in (and possibly established the hotel) in the 1870s. Perth & Kinross Archives and/or Local Studies at the A K Bell Library in Perth may have information. Hi Karen, I don't have any info on the hotel but John SCOTLAND was nephew to John CRAM, husband to Agnes ALEXANDER, sister to Jean Seaton Blair ALEXANDER, my wife's gg-grandmother. Hello All Some time back I enquired whether anyone had had contact recently with a Robert Wilkie who was on this list some time back.No replies were received and I assume he is no longer with us. The reason was that he had advised me that he and his wife had been to their library and had established that the parents of my David CLARK/Margaret TAYLOR m Findogask 18 July 1823 were :- 1)Alexander CLARK and Lillias MILLER - (David Christened 05/04/1801 in Fowlis Easter). 2)Thomas TAYLOR and Helen KINNIS - (Margaret Christened 20/07/1799 in Moneydie). The Wilkies claimed an interest in this Taylor connection). This advice I accepted as I had no reason to doubt it although I struggled to make any further progress.A constant irritant in my mind was that in 1867 one of my g.grandfather's siblings was named Margaret SHARP Clark.Furthermore the first child of the above couple from Findogask was born in Auchterarder 23 /08/1823. In March this year I spent some time at "scotlandspeople" site and found a Margaret TAYLOR b.13 Feb. 1803 to John Taylor and Isabel SHARP in Auchterarder. Following on this discovery a lot(lets say all) of relevant information from censuses/naming patterns/known facts geled together. HOWEVER,if item "2)" above is incorrect as I believe it is,the validity of the first item is also dubious and I have thus not determined with certainty who David's parents were.Looks like another day at "scotlandspeople" unless anyone has other advice. Douglas
Hello Listers! I was wondering if anyone on the list might be familiar with the Scotland's Hotel in Pitlochry? I've recently discovered that one of my ancestors, John Scotland, was the hotel's proprietor until his death in 1900. I'd like to find out a bit about the history of the place particularly as it relates to the Scotland family. I found a web site for the hotel and emailed to ask about its history but no one on the staff could help with any historic information. I'm hoping there might be someone on the list might know about the place or might be able to point me in the right direction as far as where to look or to whom to write for more information. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated! Bye for now, Karen ksteel@optonline.net www.geocities.com/ksteel.geo My Genealogy Homepage "A room without books is like a body without a soul."-Cicero

Perth's population rocketed during the 18th century, from about 9,000 in 1755 to nearly 20,000 in 1793, so the old parish church of St John's was severely overcrowded, despite being split into three congregations. During the construction of St Paul's, iron rings were found in the stone walls of the Lade, showing where barges had been moored in earlier times. Nowadays, most of Perth's population lives in the suburbs, and St Paul's has become redundant. The last service was held in 1986, but the building still dominates the High Street with its octagonal nave." and more including a map and photograph. ___________________________________________________ Alphalink WebMail - http://webmail.alphalink.com.au
I've also found another Jannet McROBBIE, christened 18 August 1771 in Nigg, Kincardine; daughter of John McROBBIE and Ann CAMPBELL. I suppose she is a second choice for "my" Janet, who married Thomas SOUTAR in Perth in 1807. Very perplexing. Both Janets were marginally able to have a child in 1813, being 48 and 42 respectively. I never knew my ancestor even had a second wife (both were named Janet) until recently, when I found his will on Scottish Documents. Anyone who can suggest a way to narrow down the candidates, please let me know! Sheila in Missouri

Sheila in Missouri, I have a record of unknown origin that has John McRobbie marrying Janet Millar and siring Margaret1750, James1752, John1754, Mary1757, Alexander1760. Your Janet1765 may be a later child? Her children's names fit the family. Thanks for the intriguing find! Regards, Robert in PA -----Original Message----- From: Donald [mailto:esquipi@sofnet.com] Sent: Wednesday, August 11, 2004 4:36 PM To: PERTHSHIRE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [PERTH] Taylor and McRobbie I have recently found a Janet MacROBIE (McRobbie, etc) on my line. Thomas SOUTAR, a merchant in Perth, married Janet MacROBIE in 1807 (his second marriage; first was Janet WHYTE). They had: James, 1808; John, 1811; Alexander, 1813. I think Janet MacROBIE was born in 1765, daughter of John McROBIE and Jannet MILLAR. A bit old, but still possible. Is anyone else researching this family? Does anyone have any information on the posible ancestry of the following persons, who I have traced back to through an old bible entry Duncan Taylor, married Janet McRobbie on the 3rd of March 1775, in Blackford, Perthshire. Duncan had an elder brother John Taylor, who was born around 1737. They had 10 children, the eldest being a Daniel Taylor, born on the 7th of January 1776. Thanks, Robert
