Hello List members, "Edmonstone Chronicles, Royal Knights and Scottish Kings" by US author, Joan La Grone, has just been published. This is a Scottish History as it pertains to the Edmonstone Knights who served the Scottish Kings (including Robert the Bruce and all of the Stewarts) from 1063 to 1745. The Battle of Sheriffmuir is covered in detail including the names of many of the prominent Perthshire Jacobites who fought under the Earl of Mar.. Sir James Edmonstone, ancestor of the author, carried the Royal Stewart Standard in this battle. The book will be of interest to anyone with a connection to Scotland. For more information, see www.JoanWheelerLa Grone.com or send an e-mail to met2000@frii.com.

Does anyone live within an easy distance of the Kinnaird Church? One of my photos inside the church didn't turn out, and I haven't had much luck in getting back to get it re-taken. It is of the Roll of Honour just inside the door, I need one over-all photo and close-ups of the Powrie entries. I would be happy to pay for all costs including mailing, gas and reasonable time compensation. The church keyholder lives opposite the church. This is one of the last photos I'm missing of my Scottish research. Mary in Oregon
With apologies for posting this simultaneously on several Lists ... I'm hoping someone on a Scottish List will have access to the necessary data. I am looking for a birth which is supposed to have taken place about 1870 or 1871 in Tenessee, according to data in the 1881 British Census. The information I have is: Surname: MILLER Child: Agnes Father: Alexander born Wick, Caithness, Scotland Mother: unknown Place: unknown Date: 1870/1871 If anyone can find this birth I would appreciate any details. With thanks in advance .... Ken Harrison North Vancouver, Canada Unless specifically stated otherwise in this message, there is no intentional attachment on this e-mail transmission.
Hello all, I am on the trail of James GOWANS, son of James Gowans and Margaret McInroy Moir. He was born in 1874 in Perth, appears in the 1881 census with his parents in Dovecotland and thereafter disappears until his death on the Western Front in 1918 and his subsequent burial in Kirkton of Mailer burial ground in Aberdalgie. I cannot find him on either the 1891 or 1901 census for Scotland but I have found an entry on the 1901 census for England that might be him. The only problem is, it is as a stoker aboard HMS Illustrious then stationed at Malta! The entry lists him as being 25 last birthday and being born in Perth - both details would be right for my James - and I cannot find any other James Gowans born in Perth at abou the same time, so I think it is probably him. Which gets me to my query.... are there likely to be any navy records for that period that cover ordinary ratings as opposed to officers and would they give me any details that might corroborate what I suspect? Thanks, Ursula --------------------------------- ALL-NEW Yahoo! Messenger - all new features - even more fun!

An old (1927) handwritten family history lists my ggg-gf, JAMES TAITT, as being "born in Perth, Scotland and was one of a fairly numerous family. The male members of which were scattered over the world in search of fortune and advneture. His sister Ann Taitt wrote a letter to him in 1804 (lost)." I do not know if this information is accurate although most other info in the long document is. Taitt has been spelled with 2 "t"'s since at least the early 1800's. Can anyone help me find him linked to Perth records? I searched a little in Orkney records (without success) since he had a 20-year career in the fur trading business--I have an 1801 XY Company (Canadian fur trade--maybe starting in the Red River area) contract for him, so he left Scotland some time before then. He was the Wintering Clerk, Superintendent of Trades, Gaoler, etc at Fort William (NWCo) until 1821 when the Company merged with the HBCo (the Fort has no more information on James' roots either). Canadian history books say to "not confuse him with James Tate, HBCo servent whose journal describes John Mowat's arrest for the murder of NWCo clerk Aeneas Mcdonnell at Eagle Lake in 1809." Since he never became a partner in the Companies like my Scottish Highland ancestors, I've guessed that he did not come from there. I also could not find the name in Wigtownshire where another fur company ancestor (ship captain) came from. James Taitt died in Chatham, Argenteuil County, Quebec in September 1826 "at about the age of 50". I read a note somewhere else that indicated maybe he was closer to 60 when he died. Therefore, he would have been born ~1766-1776. Any guidance that would help me to identify the area of Scotland this Scottish forbearer of mine came from would be GREATLY appreciated. I'd love to learn more about him, his families and the area of Scotland of my TAITT roots! Would like to join a FHS, but don't know which one.......... Kind regards, Carol Hassemer Madison, WI USA
The server where the Scotland Gen Perth Query Board resides crashed and then was hacked. The powers that be are reloading all the software on a new server and restoring the websites. It will back up and running as soon as possible, but just when that will be is totally unknown. It is not a speedy process to set up the server and restore all the data. All I can tell you is that someone is working on it and when it is completed I will let you all know. Until then you can save your queries, post on the list, or post on the board at Ancestry. I know how frustrating it is to not know if someone has responded to your query, or to not be able to respond. Unfortunately there is nothing to be done until the server is reconstructed. Hello Heather Ref to your posting in April to do look ups including Dunkeld. Do you still have the census indices? If so could I ask if you could check Andersons in Little Dunkeld, in particular the Amulree/Tomnagrew area.I am following back on the Andersons from the OPR but the records are confusing and contradictory and difficult to read. The family I know is that of a James Anderson born about 1786 to a Donald Anderson and unknown Dowan - could be a birth to Donald and Catherine Cowan June 1786. The couple also had Jannet in1790 and John in 1789. In 1815 James was at Tomnagrew. Seem to be about four households there of varying sizes. Any Andersons in this area would be of interestas they may link to earlier generations. Thank you Dave Smith
