The family ran the post office in Meigle. Alan arrived in New York City on 25.6.1805 on the Caledonia from Glasgow and was going to stay with his brother, Donald (b 1882, Meigle) in Jersey City. He returned to Scotland but arrived again in NYC on 21.6.1915 on the Tuscania from Glasgow this time to stay with his brother at 149 Center Street, NY, NY. It's what happened to him after this which is of interest to me. Hi list, One addition to the list that I would suggest is another Hugh Wallis site that has some useful features. If you are lucky enough to find a relative with a middle name there is an index for that. While that index is not fully integrated with the Batch Number site in that you cannot toggle back and forth from one to the other it does help pinpoint individuals. Try http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/. Guy, For maps you might try entering "old-maps.uk" into google. Then select County Gazeteer which appears in hypertext embedded in the paragraph. Then follow the directions. However, before you do that you might want to use the parish locator at http://www.genuki.org.uk/big. On the bottom of the screen is a map of Great Britain and Ireland; click on Scotland. When that page opens you will find "parish locator" in hypertext. Click on that. Type in the names of the parish. The site will give distance and bearing to neighbouring parishes. You can expand the radius of your search. Thank you Kay, and also Mary, Joan, Les and Joanne who also responded to my query. The June 1821 birth seems a good possibility, which I had originally discounted as all but the 1851 census seemed to suggest that she was born 1820 or earlier. Interestingly, the Familysearch entry you found , from an LDS member, has Grissel as the spelling, 'Chapeltown' and the parents as Alexander and Elisabeth. There is another Familysearch entry, from a systematic recording of the parish register, which has at the same dates no mention of Chapeltown, the spelling Girsel, and the parents Alexr. and Eliz. Two LDS members have also entered Grace as born in Glasgow 1819 - presumably guesswork because that was where her husband's banns entry appeared on an early IGI version, before the Neilston marriage entry appeared in later IGI. I haven't noticed mention before on this list of http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/CountyPerth.htm which will get you into the Familysearch Scotland pages with a reference number to trawl the entries in one parish at a time. Does anyone have any suggestion how I could locate any birth/baptism information for my great-great-grandmother Grace STEWART, born about 1818/1821? In both 1851 and 1861 censuses she gave her place of birth as Blair Atholl. In 1871 and 1881 she was in England and simply gave 'Scotland'. Her ages in these four censuses were 29, 43(not very readable), 50 and 61. She died age 63 in November 1883, in Jarrow, Durham. She married Alexander JOHNMAN, b Dunning about 1812, in Grahamston, Neilston, Renfrewshire 16th October 1840, when she was resident there, and Alexander in Glasgow. Children were called Andrew, Mary, Jessie, Elizabeth and Alexander. Andrew and Mary were her husband's parents, so traditional Scots naming pattern might suggest hers were Jessie and Alexander. The only possible records found so far are a long way from Blair Atholl. Jeff --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). Hello Listers, I am researching the family of John Dingwall, who lived at Strelitz, Cargill in Perthshire. I have been told that Strelitz was an army town, and that the 71st Regiment may have been stationed there. Does anyone have information on the 71st Regiment and its movements between 1700 - 1810? I have been told that John Dingwall was a drum major in the regiment. Many thanks ANNE

Hello, I don't think there is a FHG in Dunblane. The Archives at Stirling holds the Dunblane records, such as they are, and I have a feeling the Stirling FHG covers Dunblane, There is an interesting local history museum in Dunblane, opposite the Cathedral. The main Campbell family in Dunblane vicinity are the Campbells of Kilbryde Castle. They purchased this from John Stirling of Kilbryde, some time back, in 1661. There have been Campbells in the Dunblane OPR's from the 17th century. Dave Stirling
Dave Stirling: Just a note to say I appreciated your helpful comments to another curious member. My father's middle name was Campbell and his father William Smeaton of Perth (b. abt 1842) migrated to the U.S. Coincidentally I live on Port Stirling!
