    1. MCNAUGHTONS.
    2. Pauline P
    3. Hi Everyone, I notice there has been a few exchanges on the name MCNAUGHTON recently. I wonder if anyone recognises my JAMES MCNAUGHTON. I haven't been able to trace his birth but he was born around 1791 in Perth. I have no idea who his parents and/or siblings were but I do know quite a lot about his life. He enlisted in Edinburgh with the Black Watch in 1812 - he was a volunteer from the Royal Perthshire Militia - and his place of birth was given as Perth. His trade was cordwainer. He was a soldier in the 73rd Regiment when he married a MARY GIBSON in Edinburgh in 1813. Mary's father was a JOHN GIBSON, occupation Writer in Perth. I have quite a bit of information on his army career and he was discharged in 1833 with his intended place of residence being Edinburgh. James and Mary had six children that I am aware of - JOHN born 1818 Perth. WILLIAM born 1821. JAMES (my ancestor) born app. 1821 in Aberdeen going by census returns - no sign of this birth certificate yet. I assume his father must have been posted to the Aberdeenshire area at the time of his birth? MARY ANN MCNAUGHTON app. 1828 Edinburgh. ALEXANDER app 1831 Edinburgh. DONALD app 1837 Edinburgh. My soldier JAMES must have died sometimes between his discharge from the Black Watch in 1833 and the 1851 Census Edinburgh as this shows Mary a widow aged 56 living with her daughter Mary Ann and sons Alexander and Donald. I have searched to no available for JAMES' death and I feel that I am at a dead end as I don't know where to try next. Does anyone out there recognise my JAMES MCNAUGHTON? Or does anyone know where I can trace the records of the Royal Perthshire Militia? Or does anyone recognise MARY GIBSON. So many questions! Thank you for taking the time to read this. Best wishes, Pauline in Berkshire.

    3. hello, Does anyone have access to the OPR for Kinnoull covering the year 1824? 3. Hello The "Bible" for anyone researching in Breadalbane area "In Famed Breadalbane" tells us ; "McNaceard alias Sinclair. The Gaelic word ceard means artificer. Macaceard is the son of the artificer, or of the tinkler. As time went on the association of the the name with "tinker" was not acceptable and Tinkler was changed to Sinkler and then Sinclair The sinclairs latterly claimed a Caithness origin through the first Earl of Breadalbane's association with that county. This claim is not confirmed by the tracing of the name in Breadalbane 1622 Donald Dow Meknacard, Camuschurich. 1698 Duncan, Mill of Finlarig, 1769, Donald Rhyncuilg, John Stroncomrie, Hugh Tomgarrow. 1834 four householders of the name Sinclair in the Kenmore District" Hope you find this of interest Kay ----- Original Message ----- From: "Trish Lewis" <trishlewis@accesswave.ca> To: <PERTHSHIRE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, October 03, 2004 11:58 AM Subject: SINCLAIRS of Taymouth Area > Hello everyone. > > I'm looking for the family of a Duncan SINCLAIR whose headstone says he was > born 1750, a native of Taymouth Breadalbane. 2. Dave wrote in looking for Bells in different locations. choose Gb place... for village or parish, street option for the larger cities (for Dundee, etc) http://www.multimap.com/ http://www.streetmap.co.uk/ http://www.old-maps.co.uk/ http://www.nls.uk/digitallibrary/map/index.html really old maps at National Library of Scotland which you can order copies of I ordered a copy of a map of Dundee with parish boundaries from the Wellgate library in Dundee. The ordnance maps purchased from Tay Valley FHS have really helped me locate all the little farms, mills and parish churches. I found photos for most churches and villages on SCRAN or RCAHMS. PHOTOPOLIS has neat photos of Dundee but they are on SCRAN too. Gazeteer give general information on parishes http://www.geo.ed.ac.uk/scotgaz/gaztitle.html Before census in 1851, Scotland did Statistical Accounts which don't give surnames (so don't expect to get genealogical info) but gives general inforation about the economic conditions in that parish.1791-1799, and 1845. 300 or so questions were sent to the parish minister so their detail depend on his competeness. They often say how many of a particular profession (8 blacksmiths, 4 shoemakers) and what was the main reason keeping people poor...(short leases, power mills, comments about the morals of the young- wearing ear rings, drinking..... some thing never change) http://stat-acc-scot.edina.ac.uk/stat-acc-scot/stat-acc-scot.asp?session-id=03326b8ac6f9a42f8f5506d059cea41d;action=search Mary in Oregon

    3. Hello everyone. I'm looking for the family of a Duncan SINCLAIR whose headstone says he was born 1750, a native of Taymouth Breadalbane. He comes from a long line of Scottish Gardeners who seem to end up as Head Gardeners at estates and castles. Duncan was the Head Gardener for George BAILLIE of Jerviswood at the Mellerstaine Estate in Berwick for many years. Previous to that we believe he may have been a gardener at the Polmaise estate in Stirling. Duncan's sons John and George also gardeners. John was at the Newnham Paddox to the 7th Earl of Denbigh in Warwickshire, England, and George first at the Gordon Estate in Scotland and then at the Woburn Abbey in Bedford where he is famous for performing some experimental work which was quoted by DARWIN in his book. Duncan had a brother Archibald who was born about 1761 and married in Perth a Mary CREE. He was a gardener at the Bonnington Estate in Lanarkshire. We know Duncan and Archibald's fathers name is NOT Duncan, because in my Duncan's will he mentions an Uncle Duncan. Has anyone come across any of these names? I'm leaning towards a John SINCLAIR and Jane McTAVISH as possible parents, but not sure. Thank you Trish LEWIS Nova Scotia Canada

    3. Hi, Peggy, Thanks for the data on your McNaughtons. I don't see where mine mesh, but they well may do so somewhere in the mists of time. My Catharine (Kathrine, etc.) was baptised 19 March 1777, born Milton Eonan to John McNaughtan and Elisabeth (Elspeth, etc.) McNaughtan, who married 17 January 1762 in Weem parish. The surname spellings varied from MacNachtan to McNachtane. John seems to have been a farmer and miller, depending on where he was in Glenlyon when the various children were born. From the naming patterns, John's parents may have been Robert and Catherine, and Elisabeth's parents may have been Christian and John. However, I haven't found them. I will hold on to your tree in case I come across anything that connects. Sometimes when you look at something long enough, a flash of insight jumps out at you. Sheila in Missouri

    1. William McINTOSH and Susan McBEATH
    2. Catherine M Shaw
    3. Does anyone 'own' William McIntosh and Susan McBeath? This couple married in 1839 in Blair Atholl. They had at least 9 children, I think: Archibald 1841, Margaret 1843, Barbara 1845, William 1847, Janet 1850, Alexander 1854, Susan 1856, Duncan 1858, Donald 1865. Susan McBeath/McIntosh died in 1873 at Blair Atholl, and William re-married in 1880 (Isabella Conachie). William died aged 66 in 1886. He was described as the Guide to the Pass of Killiecrankie. His parents were named as Peter McIntosh and Margaret Sinclair. I cannot find his birth (OPR or IGI). His parents may have married in Edinburgh in 1815 (the only match I could find). It is highly likely that their daughter Barbara McIntosh accompanied my gg grandparents to New Zealand in 1859. She was described as a 'niece', but this cannot be strictly accurate. She could be a great-niece, though. Does anyone match with this family? Thanks. Cathie Shaw

    1. Re: [PERTH] marriage registration
    2. Hi List Tom Paul writes : >I think my great-great-grandfather, Rupert PAUL married Ann TAYLOR in 1843 > in Muthill. There is another Rupert PAUL/Ann TAYLOR marriage 11 days later > in Barony, Lanark. Did couples register their marriage in both the bride's > and groom's parish? Where bride and groom came from separate Parishes the marriage was usually Proclaimed (the Scots equivalent of Banns) in both Parishes and the marriage usually took place in the Brides Parish. This still applies in these enlightened times; as for my own marriage back in 1974. The only way to check for sure, pre 1855, is to have a look at the actual OPR entries. Of course, if you know where they both came, from you could make an educated guess. Of course he/she could have been "working" in Glaschu at the time. 1. Re: [PERTH] Question about marriage registration
    2. DavidM. Stirling
    3. What you are probably seeing is proclamations of marriage in two Parishes, because the couple did not live in the same Parish. The LDS did not distinguish between marriages and listing, procalamtions and pledging, hence the two entries. As aesult, the IGI is only a rough an inaccurate guide which should be checked against the orig transcribed record in the OPR's. Probably neither is a marriage date. Dave Stirling
