Hi Chris William Henderson should be listed in the Medical Register, Medical Directory and Medical Directory for Scotland of the day, and they should all identfy the body that granted his degree or licence. I don't know when the British Medical Journal began publishing obituaries of doctors, but that too is a possibility. You don't say how old WH was at his death. Edinburgh University (for instance) lists three possible William Hendersons among its medical graduates: they graduated in 1813, 1822 and 1831 respectively, but your man might have graduated at Glasgow, or Aberdeen, or St Andrews, or south of the Border, or in Dublin, or have trained at one of the Royal Colleges and bypassed the universities altogether. Hope this helps. Hi again, I am also keen to find out about the Reverend Andrew Anderson of the United Free Presbyterian Church in Perth, in the mid to late 19th Century. Has anyone come cross this individual in their research, and where would I find out more about him? Thanks again, Chris Paton
Hi there, I've just obtained a copy of the will of my great great great great great uncle, Dr William Henderson of Perth, who died at his home of Rose Terrace in 1870. He originally came from Kinclaven, and in his will, left a beneficiary fund for poor gentleman over the age of 60 residing in Perth, called Henderson's Mortification, which still exists to this day. The will is an amazing document, and is so detailed that it has confirmed my ancestry a further two generations back, to the mid 1700s. I am keen to find out more about Dr Henderson, and was wondering if anybody out there had relatives who had had dealings with him? I've come across one story on the internet which states that he performed a caesarian on a 30 year old lady in Perth in 1820, one of the first times the procedure had been performed in Scotland by a professional doctor. Unfortunately the lady giving birth did not survive, but the daughter did, and was christened Caesar Anna! Also, how would I go about finding where Henderson would have trained up to become a physician? I am intending to checjk for an obituary on him in the Perth papers at the AK Bell in Perth in the next few days, but what other resources would be worth checking? Many thanks in anticipation, Chris Paton
Dear Perth Listers, I would like to obtain information about the GRAHAM family which departed Pershshire for Banbride in County Down, Ireland, in the mid to late 1700s (see below). I would also appreciate information about sources of information on parish, probate and other records of birth, death, marriage, wills, landholding, etc. available for Perthshire. Thank you for your attention. Roy Keys Montreal |-2. My gr-gr-gr grandmother's name was Murray McIntyre (b Kilmadock) which seems rather unusual to me. Does anyone know if Murray would be pronounced differently from the male first name or the surname. Does anyone else have a female Murray in their tree? A grand-daughter in Ontario was also called Murray. Daryl
Dear Gavin, I very much appreciate all the information you have forwarded to me It is going to take me time to 'git mae heid roond it' but boy it does give me a way forward or is that backwards. What I need to find is my William's father George Grahame living somewhere in the Parish of Auchtergaven. I have a very stubborn streak, and if I take after my grgrgrgrandfather then he would have definitely gone, when he was old enough, to seek out his biological father. I have always felt that his father brought his illegitimate family from outside the East Lothian area to have them christened. What time frame is your James Graham that had an adulterous affair? My George has died by 1845 according to the marriage of his ill daughter... daughter of the Late George Graham I will mull over all the other information you kindly sent me off line I really need to look at the marriage cert for William Graham and Elizabeth Robertson in Auchtergaven 1843. from family oral history a lot is making sense since I read your information Sheena PS I too was born many moons ago in Edinburgh, married and live in Broughty Ferry.
Hello, Having tracked most of my Maconochie lines, I am now really stuck on just one: Edward Maconochie - born 10 June 1845 at Rhynd, Perthshire, youngest child of James Maconochie and Bethia Gowans Edward married Jean McLean on 23 June 1865 in Dundee and they had 2 children in Dundee: Edward McLean Maconochie (16 June 1865-1867) and Peter McLean Maconochie (born 14 April 1867). This is the last I can find about the family - they don't appear in the 1880/1881 census for anywhere in the UK, Canada or the US (that I can find!) Does this ring a bell with anyone? No associations with other families have been discovered either, unless the Laing or Kerr. So, knowing well where Stanley and Moneydie are located, Auchtergaven is easy. A9 north out of Perth, before you get to Little Dunkeld). So much on the 'net that I will have fun learning all I can via "Google"! - L.D.R.
Many thanks to Kathleen, Mary and Tony. especially, as I should admit I live in Broughty Ferry my husband and friends all went to school at Glenalmond we all knew we knew Auchtergaven not one of us could place the place. We all plead the age thing, being in our 70's a useful excuse at times. It was so sad to read of the devastating fire in the church at Bankfoot. We intend to visit there this weekend aches and groans permitting Sheena nee Grahame
Good Evening, having spent at least two years trying to find the father of William Grahame in the East Lothian area, I have a glimmer of a clue. he married a Elisabeth Robertson. The only marriage I can find for this time frame is 1843 in Auchtergaven a place I cannot find on my map. However, I am not certain that this is 'my' William as he returns to Melrose where their daughter Janet Graham is born 1847. Why would someone, not born in East Lothian just christened in Ormiston 1833 in adultery so says the cert! go to Auchtergaven. he is on the Haddington 1841 census still with his mother no father recorded thanks, Sheena nee Grahame
