Hi list: While in Perth in November I got to look at the 1901 census for Kinnoull, Municipal Burgh of Perth, Third Burgh Ward of Perth . Is there anyone on list that connects with this family? Alexander, John, Charles, and William are all names of siblings of Alexander Robertson. The other family names are not although he had an aunt named Helen.who also married a James Robertson who might have been a brother to his own father John Robertson. His father John was also a coachman and James Robertson was a Seaman or Whaler. Trying to find more on my family and hitting brick walls. Alexander gave the information on his fathers death in Perth in 1896 and was living at that time at No.3 Burnbank Terrace too. Always Hopeful. Kaye

Many thanks, Les! And a Happy Christmas to all! As for it being "white", most of the central and eastern parts of the U.S.A. and Canada are having a "real" winter. I live in northern California. Today has been unseasonably warm at about 65 degrees Fahrenheit (20 degrees Celsius, more or less), which dampens some of our hopes for a "white Christmas". Yet my locality is quite unlike the California of the public imagination---we really DO get frost and snow on occasion---and so I'm in the spirit of the season, if not in the reality of it. Warmest greetings of the season! First, a Very Happy Christmas to all! I have been doing quite a lot of research at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk . The resources and the archival images are fantastic. The main archival search engine for events prior to 1855 is the Parish Registers. However, the website does not identify each parish with a county. Could someone here please post which parishes correspond with Perthshire? Or is there some way to look this up? Maybe Scotland's People has this information elsewhere on their website, but I have not found it. I can easily see that this would be one of the most valuable tools in our research. And on this topic, many of us have ancestral families who may have lived in nearby Fife and Stirling, so knowing the parishes associated with these counties would also be invaluable. Thanks in advance. ---Bob (Robert Drummond) Robertson Napa Valley, California
Hello Margo My maternal grandparents came from Glasgow and I remember as a child listening in amazment to my grandmother telling my sister and me how they had to attend school on Christmas day. However they did not have school on New Years day. From what I gather it was just an ordinary working day in the 1890's. Dear Mail List: Many years ago I was very pleased to discover that an ancestor, Alexander Dun, who was born about 1722, had been ordained in the Church of Scotland in 1747, married Elizabeth Rankine in 1754, and was the Minister at Bendochy until his death in 1784. There were five children, one (William) marrying Frances Renwick in 1782, and another (Ann) marrying Robert Henderson in 1779. It is also probable that a third child (Elizabeth) married Robert Low. However, I cannot find any definite reference to Alexander`s birth - and almost nothing during his ministry, except as he baptised the many children of Ann and Robert in Dundee. Can anyone help please? - and meanwhile, a happy Christmas to all. Regards, Loftus Dun
[Reply to your Robertson message] Kaye--- Merry Christmas! Have you got a Thomas ROBERTSON in your Robertson line, m. 29 Aug 1818 in Scone, Perths., to a Margaret AITKIN? That's my family line. Scottish archives online show only two children from this marriage: Robert, b. Forteviot 1826 (my g-grandfather), and Janet, b. Forteviot 1830 (no issue). I have a hunch that some other wee Robertsons may have been born between 1818 and 1826. Few people, at least in the 19th century, waited eight years for their first-born! Also, I would love to know where this Thomas Robertson came from. Archives in Scone and Forteviot are mute. I imagine he was born about 1795, give or take. But where? And, since Aitkin is a less common surname, might I find some resources in and around Scone for her family? Where does this branch of Aitkin originate? Their son Robert married into a Drummond family from Muthill, and I won't bore you; I have all that and the subsequent Drummond, and Comrie relatives from Comrie, well documented. See Ancestry World Trees, under Robert Robertson, b. 1826 Forteviot. I'm specifically looking for Thomas Robertson and Margaret Aitkin (my g-g grandparents) in or around Scone in 1818. Do you or does anyone have some clues? Many thanks in advance, and again, a very Happy Christmas to all! ---Bob (Robert Drummond) Robertson Napa Valley, California

I am working on a book of Scottish holiday traditions for my family, especially my 80 year old mother and 85 year old father. Both of them seem to dwell on their lives in Scotland, which we left in the early 1960's. I know you are all probably tired of writing about things you do for Christmas, but I'm wondering if you could share with me some unusual traditions you might have. For instance, I took pictures of my ancestors and cut them out. I then cut balls from card stock (stiff paper) and glued the picture to the cardstock, which was red or green. On the back I wrote a little something about each family member, such as where they were born etc and then punched a hole in the top and strung ribbon through it. I then hung them on our Xmas tree. Do any of you have any ideas or unique things you've done. I hope all of you are staying healthy and enjoying the holiday season. Margo - Atlanta
Thanks to everyone who commented on the name 'Murray' as a woman's first name. It is so unusual that I do wonder where it came from. I know that Murray McIntyre's mother was Elizabeth MacFarlane but there could very well be a Murray surname somewhere in there as well. I guess I shouldn't be so surprised considering that my name is Daryl and I am not a man! Maybe this runs in the family tree! Daryl L Frame Manitoba

Ann MACDONALD married Donald CRERAR (son of Donald Crerar & Jane) 11 August 1865, King Place, Perth. Donald was living at 10 Foundry Lane, Perth and Ann at South Street at the time of their marriage . They had several children in Perth, then more in Dundee - this family is of particular interest, since their son George (1890 Dundee) has the middle name D'ALL, my main line of research and I am trying to find the connection with my family. Hi Chris These are all printed and published books which are available in large academic libraries and the National Libraries including the British Library. The Medical Register and Medical Directory were, and still are, annual volumes listing all doctors with British licences to practise; they have been published since the middle of the C19. Earlier editions often gave summary CVs of individual doctors too; modern privacy laws seem to have put the lid on that. The Medical Directory for Scotland came later and lasted for a shorter period; it may not have been an annual, but more of an occasional, and is found in fewer libraries. Large medical libraries will have complete sets of the British Medical Journal but, as I say, I am not sure when it began printing regular lists of medical obituaries. Most of the ancient Scottish universities have published list of C19 and earlier graduates; these are now out of print but again are usually available for reference in academic and national libraries. In the C18 and early C19, students often went to university very young, commonly at the age of 11 or 12 (for Arts students) or 15 or 16 (for medical students), so your William could have been the one who graduated at Edinburgh MD 1813 - but that is pure supposition. William and Henderson, after all, are common Scottish names. Hope this helps.
