    3. What is mtDNA testing and can anyone have it done? Where? How much does it cost? What can you find out with the results? Thanks to anyone who can answer this for me. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Steven C. 3. Lucille: mtDNA tests the maternal DNA everyone gets from their mother. So if you had the test, it would tell you the haplotype and the haplogroup of your mtDNA, your Mother's, her mother's etc. It is the equivalent of testing Y DNA in males, except that the mother's family name changes at each generation, It can be used to test if two people may be descended from the same GGG Grandmother by seeing if their mtDNA matches. We can not tell you the cost of tests on the Rootsweb lists. At this time I suggest that people have the mtDNA test done through the non-profit National Geographic Society's Genographic project. https://www5.nationalgeographic.com/genographic/ Both males and females have mtDNA and both can be tested.
