Samuel Moody "Dock" Perkins --------------------------------------------- Birth Date: About 1845 Birth Place: Marion Co., AL Death Date: 1939 Death Place: Fayette Co., AL Burial Place: Shady Grove Baptist Church Occupation: farmer/lay minister in Meth. church Religion: Methodist Notes: "Grandpa Dock" was a minister in addition to being a farmer. He was a "holiness" preacher and his great-granddaughter, Helen Perkins Davis Fallin, remembers him as a "foot-washer". He is in the records of the Alabama Methodist church as being appointed a lay minister to the Jasper circuit in nw Alabama. He is buried in the Shady Grove Baptist church cemetery outside Winfield, Al. So, maybe he preached whatever denomination needed him. Helen remembers him as a "hellfire and damnation" preacher, and one night, after hearing him preach, when she got home she was afraid to take off her shoes for fear the devil would snatch her through the cracks in the wooden floor. Spouse: Elizabeth A. Stanley Birth Date: 29 Mar 1848 Death Date: 29 Nov 1917 Death Place: Fayette Co., AL Burial Place: Shady Grove Baptist Church Occupation: on 1880 census listed as having "womb" disease; Religion: Methodist Spouse Medical: According to one census, she was listed as having "womb disease". Her granddaughter, Helen Perkins Davis Fallin, remembers her as being very quiet and introverted, shy. She never attended church, according to Helen, because she didn't like crowds. She didn't take up much time with her grandchildren, but she did spend time with Helen, who loved her greatly. Helen thinks that's why she paid more attention to her, because she knew Helen loved her so. Helen also said that "Mamaw Perkins" was "peculiar." She would dust things constantly. For instance, if she were sitting in your living room, as ya'll talked, she would be dusting your table and pictures, etc. with her apron. Was this "obsessive-compulsive" behavior, I wonder? Spouse Medical: Nancy LaVina "Viney" Chambless Perkins died of throat cancer. She basically starved to death (malnutrition) because she couldn't eat. At that time (1940's), I don't believe there was much you could do for cancer. She did enjoy tobacco, also.
