Perkins. ... I was told her first name may have >been Mary but that does'nt help much. ... I don't know if this is going to be of any help, but I have a Cato A. Perkins listed who was born 1858, a son of Jacob Perkins and Mary Jane "Polly" Maricle. Cato was born in LA and died in Montgomery Co, TX. Mary was born 1819 in LA and reportedly died after 1910, also in Montgomery Co. Other children of Jacob and Mary were Jesse F., Isaac J., Sarah Ann, Joshua, Laura, and Dick Perkins. These Perkinses descend from a family which moved from SC to St Landry Parish, LA and settled in what is now Calcasieu Parish, LA in the early 1800s. Some of them remained in LA, but others moved into TX. Jacob had an uncle and a brother named Cader, which may really have been Cater, a dialect pronunciation of Cato. There was a Cato family in the area of SC where these Perkinses came from and some of their descendants spell the surname Cater. One of the Catos was married to a Perkins, and it may be that the first name Cato/Cader comes from that family's surname. In any event, it is not a common name, and it is most curious that you also have a Cato in your Perkins family. There's a number of differences in the data to be accounted for, but if you find reason to believe that the 2 1858 Catos are the same person, get in contact with me by private e-mail and I'll tell you more.
