Karen Beidelman ####################################################### MHI Photograph Database This database is a catalog of American Civil War (ACW) photographs from the Special Collections Branch of MHI. Usually, patrons are searching for ancestors, researching particular ACW regiments, or looking for examples of items worn or used by soldiers of the period. Ultimately, this database will reflect the full range of MHI's photograph collection, ranging from the periods of the Mexican War in the 1840s to recent operations such as those in Somalia and Bosnia. Also, as they are scanned, actual images will be made available through the database. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ NOTE: There are well over 27,000 image descriptions in this catalog and our gateway is not the most efficient in searching those descriptions. Please keep your queries short and to the point. Since every description has "Civil War" attached as a keyword, searching on "Civil War" will attempt to retrieve every record. Please be patient in your searching. If your search takes a very long time, you probably have entered search terms that are too broad and that match a large number of records. All the search terms are implicitly ORed together. This means that any record that contains any of the words in your query will be marked as a potential match for your query. Barring unique last names, it is probably best to start by just entering the ordinal number of the unit being sought. So, rather than enter "27th Michigan Volunteer Infantry" and wait for 5-10 minutes, only to get an error, it might be better to enter "27th" and then get 165 (as of 3 July 1997) records to browse. If you have technical difficulties with this database, please send your questions and/or comments to steinkel@carlisle-emh2.army.mil. Please do not send technical questions to Special Collections; they are not equipped to respond to such queries. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Please note also that this is only a catalog. We do not have photographs linked to the catalog entries. Duplicates of photos may be obtained by following these directions. Send a message to the MHI Special Collections Branch. This may be accomplished in several ways: e-mail to MHI-SC@CARLISLE-EMH2.ARMY.MIL postal mail to U.S. Army Military History Institute ATTN: Special Collections 22 Ashburn Drive Carlisle, PA 17013-5008 or call them directly at +1-717-245-3434 In the message, provide your postal address and the catalog number of the photograph you desire (the "RG" number). They will mail a photocopy of the photograph to you for your examination and approval, along with much more detailed instructions, which will include charges for the duplication of photos. Assuming that you want a copy of the photograph(s), you will then mail a check for the appropriate amount payable to "MHI Fund" and the copy will be furnished after a suitable number of weeks for processing. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Enter terms to find: Maximum number of records to retrieve at one time: ------------------------------------------------------------------------ USAMHI Special Collections Branch / MHI-SC@carlisle-emh2.army.mil / 6 September 1997 #######################################################
