It really did seem like the stopping point for any one coming into Texas. And it is so very pretty there. Did you know Eisenhower was born there? Margie, Did you get the Texas census? I didn't want to leave you out. Mary
Oh yeah. I worked in Denison for about a year. I only live a county away. Very pretty area is right. I think Fannin County is even prettier. Love going there to do genealogy. Red River, Lamar and Fannin Counties were all barge stops along the Red River and were some of the earliest non-Mexican settlements in the state. A recent book about Red River County is called "Gateway to Texas" if that tells you how important they were. I don't know about Fannin and Red River but Lamar has an excellent Genealogical Society if you need help. The County Clerks office at Bonham in Fannin County is wonderful. They have no problem letting you look up records. Infact, both my great-grandparents and my great-great-grandparents failed to pick up their original marriage certificate. The women at Bonham found them in their storage and gave both of them to me free of charge. So anyone having access to this court house and ancestors from this area, it is well worth the trip to Bonham.
