    1. [PERKINS] genealogical software and commercial data sources
    2. Hi Pam you wrote to reply off line but this is a topic that comes up every year and it is beneficial for all considering the purchase or upgrade. I personally benefited when I changed programs by a couple of days of conversations that went on. In a message dated 01-02-03 13:03:01 EST, you write: I am about to purchace a new genealogy program, as I am unhappy with the one I have. I would like everyones input as to their best pick of programs. Please respond to me off list, as I do not wish to start a big discussion on the list. I will post the results to the list. Also, has anyone purchased the set of Census Index CD Bundle from Family Tree maker 1607-1880? Is this purchase worth it? <<<<<<<<<<< I myself decided on Family Tree Maker some years ago. I have not upgraded it. I purchased the cheapest package as I was advised that the CD's were incomplete, unsourced, and generally not worth the cost. The difference in the packages at that time was the number of cd's that they included, not the program itself. I have been very happy with the software, though there are a few things that I would like for it to do now that I am more experienced and am organizing my data in different ways. I was also advised at that time that most of the better programs would do nicely, they just had a few different options that might or might not be of use to me. There were a few programs that some people were very dissatisfied with. (I do not remember which ones they were) I was also advised not to submit my research to any of the commercial firms as they would publish it in with all the other data and make a profit on my efforts. They would sell good research in with plagerised copying of bad data making their product technically all but worthless, in fact worse than worthless as some would pass on that bad data as researched thus furthering the dissemination of bad data. I hope others will supply the names of the programs that they use that they like. I will be passing on the comments to the PERKINS and RUGGLES lists for the edification of those subscribers. Bill
