Lucille: mtDNA tests the maternal DNA everyone gets from their mother. So if you had the test, it would tell you the haplotype and the haplogroup of your mtDNA, your Mother's, her mother's etc. It is the equivalent of testing Y DNA in males, except that the mother's family name changes at each generation, It can be used to test if two people may be descended from the same GGG Grandmother by seeing if their mtDNA matches. We can not tell you the cost of tests on the Rootsweb lists. At this time I suggest that people have the mtDNA test done through the non-profit National Geographic Society's Genographic project. https://www5.nationalgeographic.com/genographic/ Both males and females have mtDNA and both can be tested. Hi Listers, I cannot join in on the DNA testing for Perkins. There are no male family members left, that I am aware of. My great grandfather was Jeff Perkins (born about 1874) KY and married to Myrtle Thompson (born abt. 1891). My grandmother, Nora L. Perkins was born in 1914, KY. She was raised in Adair County...Knifley, KY to be precise. Other children in the household include dna M (1913), Gussie (1917), Lara (abt. 1920), Leonard (abt. 1925), Oconal (abt. 1928), and Ansel (Ancel) 1930. All siblings of Nora are now deceased. Does anyone have a Jeff Perkins (could be Jeffery, Jefferson, etc) in their line? Thanks for any help. What is mtDNA testing and can anyone have it done? Where? How much does it cost? What can you find out with the results? Thanks to anyone who can answer this for me. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Steven C. Hello: Please go to your personal result web page and upload your results to YSearch. There is a link on the page to do so. Add the name, dates and location of your earliest know Parkins or Perkins ancestor. If you have had the mtDNA test, please do the same for your mtDNA results. The amount of info to reveal at YSearch or MitoSearch is up to you. You can also put this info on your Setup Preferences page. Since we do not post pedigrees of those tested, doing this will help others to determine if you may be related. You can see what his looks like at http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Parkins-Perkins Thanks, Steven C. Perkins
I'm still trying to trace John Perkins commonly known as Jack. He was born in Hereford in 1889 and his parents were John Perkins and Harriet Tyler. He married a French lady called Marie and they had a son who became a chef in London. The son may have been called John or Robert. Would love to hear from anyone who has information on Jack. He worked for a shoe company as a buyer, probably in East Anglia in England. He was still alive c1960. Regards Sue Perkins Rarangi, New Zealand

Any one researching a William Perkins who died before 1849 in or around Madison County, Tennessee? His wife Mary, (Goff?) later remarried and a partition was made with his children, Isham, Sophoria, Newton, and another I don't have my notes for. Truman Adkins Fieldale, Henry County, Virginia

Arthur Perkins b. abt 1882 Virginia I know this should be an easy one to find. The only one I see is in the 1900 Census, A W Perkins in Dinwiddie, Virginia, son of Dr Edward W Perkins and Fanny. Is this Arthur Perkins born abt 1882? Anyone know what the A W stands for? Your help would be appreciated. Carolee Diamond
You are right. Betty's Perkins dead ended in Warren Co. She never was able to go further back. She was so busy researching others that when she retired, her health didn't let her research her own. Now it's too late. Vascular Dementia takes a toll. Now when I bring her home for a few hours, she isn't even interested in her over 1000 book Genealogy library. Virginia, Bastardy Bonds: It means that that the woman probably became pregnant out of wedlock and someone had to post a bond so she would not be on welfare after the baby was born. The father, her mother, her father, several people to hide the real father (most common), a minister and/or she could even post it herself. It was Betty's most wanted book because it filled in many missing links. It was a huge endeavor as Betty spent many hours copying/sorting loose pieces of paper at the NC archives. A chore few Genealogists are willing to do. When we moved from Raleigh to Mount Airy, she had completed only 33 counties out of 100. No one has picked up where she left off because it is much more work than transcribing from a record or microfilm. Her books are now sold out. Copies can be purchased from Mountain Press. It is available free on Betty's web site. and, Apprentice: From Webster's dictionary apprentice is defined as a: one bound by indenture to serve another for a prescribed period with a view to learning an art or trade b : one who is learning by practical experience under skilled workers a trade, art, or calling The apprenticeship laws of North Carolina were inherited by Tennessee upon statehood in 1796. These laws, existing from 1762, applied to orphans primarily as follows: a.. Each year the names of all orphans who had no guardian or who were not previously bound were to be reported to the Orphan's Court b.. Where states were of insufficient means to support said orphans or illegitimate children, these children were bound as apprentices. These apprentices lasted until age 21 for the males and until age 16 for the females. c.. Masters of these apprentices were required to provide food, clothes, and housing and were required to ensure the apprentice be taught to read and write d.. At the conclusion of the indenture the master was required to pay the apprentice a sum either specified in law or in the apprenticeship bond e.. An apprenticeship could be cancelled if the apprentice was not taught as required or was mistreated. The apprentice could at that time be rebound to another master at the discretion of the court. Ill treated apprentices could prosecute and recover damages. f.. Copies of the apprentice bond were recorded and kept in the court clerk's office g.. Orphans were deemed to be any fatherless child. Tennessee law stipulated in 1825 that an child could also be deemed an orphan if the father abandoned the child or refused to support the child. Illegitimate children could be bound out without their mother's consent if the mother "disregarded their moral and mental culture and that she (i.e, the mother) kept a house of ill repute or lived in one". I understand, through our family history, one of the first into Greenbrier, Va. / WV was a John Perkins. Am looking for any information on John Perkins who was born 1817 in PA/WV. His oldest son was Robert A. Perkins and there is a Robert Perkins who married a Smith in Washington County, PA. I do not know if this is his parents but would like to either accept them or rule them out. Any information on them would be appreciated. William moved to Linn County, IA in the 1840's along with John. William died there in 1902. He said in a bio that he was born in Wheeling West Virginia. Has anyone info on this family who I believe is a brother to John. John also married a Forsythe (Christina) in Linn county about 1848. He then married Tirza Ide in Monroe county Michigan in 1855. Again any info would be appreciated. Jackie Perkins-Horton Silverdale, WA
