Listers, We Perkins have to remember that due to the nature of the name...Son of Peter...or little Son of Peter...it is quite likely that there are multiple originations as well as subsequent adoptions of the surname. My searches have "petered" out in 1690 with David Perkins being mentioned as a witness to a will. His grandson, David (rather active during the revolution), is allegedly the father of my 4th great grandfather, Lemuel Perkins. The earliest Perkins record I have found is a ship manifest record of Francis Perkins and son, Francis Perkins on the 1607 supply ship to Jamestown, but I do not believe any of that line lived, if the record is even accurate. I have not found a link between my Perkins line and the Ipswitch line, which supposedly dates to 1630. The Ipswitch Perkins' are fairly well documented. I did find another migration around 1634, but haven't found any details concerning it. Anyway, no more intense than my search has been, I have uncovered three different migrations of Perkins' and there are doubtless more. Perhaps the DNA project is the only sure way to nail it down. Patricia, Kevin, For several generations in North Carolina, my Perkins' ancestors were slave holders, and a few fought on the side of the South during the war of congressional agression (formerly known as the war of northern agression). The possibility of either: a) mulatto children or b) freed slaves adopting the Perkins surname is very real. My roots come from Kentucky. What city, have no clue. Gfathers name was Delmar Earl "Duke" Perkins. Wife was Ethel Perkins (maiden name unknown). His son, my father was, Ronald Lee Perkins born in 1934. His other children were Betty Louise Perkins, born between 1926-1930,(Died around the age of 19 due to a train colliding with her car in South central LA, CA) and Jack Perkins, born in 1926 (whereabouts unknown) Jack was somewhat very good with interior design and from what I was told when I was young was that her had a Male special friend. They all moved from Kentucky in 1936 to South central LA, CA. that is as far back I know. I can not find anything through this Perkins_List. Anyone have any ideas? The answer to that is NO - - and the answer about the question of Joshua "Old Jock" Perkins's ancestry has been, and is still being debated. Using the PERKINS DNA there is one direct descendant of Old Jock who has been tested, and he is not from Richard; however, the question of his race, or racial origins, still remains unclear A number of his family were identified as mulatto - - and some laid claim to Portuguese. Your James appears to be of the right age to possibly be the brother to my David (the one born 1733). I know nothing particular about this James, but it is a possibility. This particular David is the one who was a delegate to the constitutional ratification convention in 1788. He holds the dubious distinction of being the only one in favor of the constitution prior to the addition of the bill of rights. He also helped run the overland supply to Boston during the British harbor blockade. By biographical information on David is: David served on a committee to aid the people of Boston in the Boston Blockade in 1777 he was the Justice of the Peace who presided over Counts Court He is listed on the roster of soldiers from North Carolina in the Revolution as being a Sergt in Mills Co enlisting 6 Feb 1782 In 1788 he was on the committee to go to Hillsboro to consider the adoption of the United States Constitution that-had been brought up in Philadelphia in 1787 at the Constitutional Convention. On the first census of NC in 1790 he was listed in the Newbern District of Pitt Co. with 1 male under 16, 2 over 16 2 females and 9 slaves. [corrected: 1 male over 16, 2 under 16] Birth & death dates taken from Dar Patriot Index There are many land grants recorded in Pitt Co for David from 1782 until 1800 and other land listings as early as 1771. Mary, I show James as died in Beaufort County, NC, 1760 and his father David (wife was Mary Walburton) as died 1733 Bath County, NC. However, I show James as having sons David (b. 1733), James, Jonathan and Edmund (or Edward). I have no dates or places with the other sons. It is likely that the founders of Bath County, Kentucky were probably from Bath County, NC, (and the founders of Bath County NC were probably from Bath, England, or the children of persons therefrom) but I have no specific information. The piece of information that I have on James (taken from the research of a now deceased cousin of mine) is: There are several land grants of 200 acres each listed for James Perkins dated1746 to 1749 all in Beaufort Co. NC. In Dec court of 1750 there is a sell of 100 acres in behalf of John Mews on the north side of Bay River on the west side of Vandemore's creek for James Perkins to Jacob Jones being 1/2 of the 200 acre grant received 13 October 1749.In his will dated March 26, 1760 he wills his land to his wife Margaret to use and enjoy in her natural lifetime so long as she remains a widow. When her children David James Jonathan and Edmund become of age she is to have an equal part with them 'I also will that my children shall be put to school an educated so as to read properly ye English tongue and write a legible hand and it may be lawful for my executors hereafter to sell of my personal estate such things as they think rest proper for the benefit of my children to pay the expense of their learning': His executors were named his wife Margaret, his brother Jonathan, and James Latham. Martie, My roots are North Carolina as well. I have traced mine reliably to Lemuel Perkins, born 2 Feb, 1782 in Pitt County. Less reliably, I have his father as David Perkins, born 1733 in Beaufort County. I have David's father as James Perkins, died 1760 in Beaufort County. James' father was apparently another David, who Died in 1733. The first record of this David is as a witness to Lawrence Cruise's will on January 13, 1690 in Albemarle Co. I am looking for information of Perkins who descended from Richard and Clarissa Perkins who lived in Wayne Co. NY in 1850/60. Richard was born @ 1805 in NY. They had children, Ira, Mary, Benjamin and other's. The only one I was able to track was Benjamin who ended up marrying a widow named Sarah who had two children. They lived in Wayne co. NY. Any help on this line of Perlins would be greatly appreciated. Warm Regards, June

Hi, I am in search of Jeff Perkins who married Myrtle Thompson. Jeff was born in Kentucky, about 1874 and Myrtle was born in Kentucky, about 1891. I don't know where they were wed, but I do know they raised their children in Adaire County. My maternal grandmother is one of their children. Her name is Nora L. Perkins Gilbert. Jeff could be simply Jeff, Jefferey, or even Jefferson. In the 1920 Census, he is just listed as Jeff. Please, any information on Jeff Perkins and Myrtle Thompson is appreciated. Thanks so much.
