    3. While we are re-introducing, I'll put my line back out there. David seems to be a common Perkins name in NC back then...we are probably cousins somewhere. This is my direct line, not showing siblings. David Perkins, d 1733 NC, m Mary Walberton (he first shows up as a witness to a will in Albermarle, NC, 1690) James Perkins, d 1760 NC, m Margaret David Perkins, b 1733 Beaufort County, NC, d 1797, Pitt County, NC, m Elizabeth Ross Lemuel Perkins, b 1782 Pitt County, NC, d 1854, Pacolous, NC, m Elizabeth Grimes William H. Perkins, b 1820, Pitt County, NC, d aft 1880, m Mary Louise Crandall (or Crandell) Lemuel Enoch Perkins, b 1850, Pitt County, NC, d 1927 Taylor County, TX, m Julia Ann Neighbours John Emmett Perkins, b 1884, Hamilton County, TX, d 1928 Taylor County, TX, m Nettie Ilena Pannell Coleman Jackson "Jack" Perkins, b 1913, Taylor County, TX, d 1988, Napa California, m Matalie Parker Jack is my grandfather. The David Perkins who was born 1733 went to Hillborough for the ratification convention in 1788, so apparently travel between Orange county and Beaufort/Pitt county was not too unusual. 3. Lynda: Correct. It would show the King Y DNA if you test a King male for Y DNA. If you test mtDNA it will lead to the mother of Mildred Horton. Do a pedigree chart to see the relationships. 2 Donald King 1Robert King 6 Leon Brownell 3 Lois Brownell 7 Mildred Horton So, for Y DNA it is 1, 2, 4, 8, etc., and for mtDNA it is 1, 3, 7, 15, etc. SCPerkins On 4/10/06, L King <l.king42@verizon.net> wrote: > Hi Steve, > > In this line (below), testing the latest generation (King) would probably > not show a link to Perkins, am I right? > > Thomas Perkins (b, 1834, d. 1881) m. 3. Karleene: Some of your autosomal, atDNA, and some of your X DNA, came from your mother's father, so you do have "Perkins" genes. At this point we can't be sure of which genes came from him. Personally, I think all males should test their Y DNA from their father and their mtDNA from their mother. In a few years I expect we will start testing X DNA and other autosomal DNA to get a more complete picture of our genetic inheritance. So it is much less useful -- in fact almost completely useless -- for studies based on a surname, such as PERKINS. That is because it is *always lost* in the descent from father to child. The information which can be developed from mtDNA is therefore very different from yDNA, which tracks from father to son (never to a daughter). Darrell Darrell A. 2. I know Steve has more knowledge of this than I do but I am a Perkins daughter. My DNA does not reflect the Perkins line - it goes through each of the female line such as: my parents are George Perkins and Mrytle Valiquet my mtdna (which I have had tested) then goes to Viola Bates Susan Morrison Mary Ellen Forqueran Susannah Miller (born about 1794 in Bedford county, VA That is as far back as I have the female line but mine tested bact to the very first people who inhabited the British Isles and of the seven daughters of Eve (a very good book to read) I come from Ursula. It is very interesting. Jackie

    3. Karleene: Everyone gets their mtDNA from their mother. Men and women can be tested for mtDNA and see if their female ancestry is the same or different. As an example, Edward Perkins married Elizabeth Butcher in new Haven CT in 1641. Their male children had his Y DNA, her mtDNA, and autosomal DNA from both. Their female children had her mtDNA and atDNA from both of them. To find out what her mtDNA was, we need to test several people who can trace their female ancestry directly back to Elizabeth. So Perkins females will have their Mother's mtDNA only. It can be traced, but it will not tell us about the Perkins surname which is tied to the Y DNA of males. It may be possible in the future to learn something about the atDNA of both parents. This area is still being researched and will also work with the X chromosome as well as with the non-sex chromosomes. I hope that answers your question. 2. Ok I will try it again. Do you realize we now have three matching my John Perkins but Arwood and Mary (Perkins) Williams whose brother did the sample died in a car accident in mid January - that was a big loss to me. Jackie

    2. I gave blood to this way back when the LDS church was collecting samples - I was told if I already did that all I would have to do is register on line with them and they would send me information. I registered and received nothing. Should I do it again? Jackie

    3. Jackie: Right now, Sorenson only has the Y DNA database online. So only male results can be searched for. They promise to have results for mtDNA up later. When they do, we have to search the database for names of people on the pedigree chart we gave them to find our results or the results of the person you are interested in. At this time, I recommend everone participate in the Sorenson tests since they are free. If you want results in a month or so, then you have to go to one of the testing labs and pay. See my blog: http://jgg-online.blogspot.com for details on the test companies. Steven C.
