Good morning: Thanks for throwing your line out to the group. I connect through Elizabeth the daughter of Constantine who was the son of Nicholas. I have very little direct documentation, only several good sources, all the rest are tertiary. What is your documentation for dates and relationships? I'll be happy to e-mail you my files if you wish, and again THANKS! Kevin: This list is for all Perkins any where in the world. Please post your line and hopefully, there is someone else on the list also interested in Perkins in England and Wales. For most American Perkins, we do not really know where our families are from in Britain. We need you and other persons there to post info. We also need you to take the DNA tests, but that is a different topic. While most posts are USA oriented, in most cases, we are all searcing for our origins in Britain. We need those of you there to post your lines. If you still want to unsubscribe, look at the message you got when you joined the list for the unsubscribe instructions. Regards, Steven C. Looking for more information on John Perkins born 1811-1815 in either New York or Indiana. He married Elizabeth Lee or Loe, she born Aug 14, 1818 in Ohio and died before 1880 possibly in Michigan. Known issue is Isaac H., Harriett, Cinderella, Chapman/Caleb, Ester, Milton, Asbreen, Hampton, and Oliver. Most of the issue known to be born in Madison Co., Indiana. According to the 1870 Antwerp Twp, Van Buren Co., Michigan census John and family were living there. So apparently this was when Elizabeth died. The 1860 census shows John in Madison County, Indiana. According to Philip Perkins, in an email, it is possible that after Elizabeth died John married Elizabeth's widowed sister Nancy. Anyone have further info on John and Elizabeth or John's parents? has there been a DNA study on Edward?
OK, now I see Paula's message. Have you looked at the Parkins and Perkins Y DNA site? http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Parkins-Perkins/ When you do scroll down to the R1a section, there you will see entries for Edward Perkins of New Haven, my direct ancestor. We do not match the John and Abraham Perkins families. At this point we have tested descendants of one of Edward Perkins 3 sons, John, because we have not yet been able to find descendants of David or Jonathan to test. Because of this and the fact that we test very close to the DNA signature of the Chiefs of the McDonalds, we can't be certain that the current results are those for Edward. Also, Paula's book notes the probability that Edward is a son of William Perkins and a half-brother of Rev Capt William Perkins of Topsfield, Massachussetts. We need a Perkins descendant of Rev William to test to check this theory. So, anyone meet those conditions? Let me know and we will get you tested. Regards, Steven C. Each child gets two kinds of DNA. One comes only from the mother. That is mitochondrial DNA, abbreviated mtDNA. The other kind of DNA is in the chromosomes. Each child gets half of its chromosomes from each parent, one of each kind from each parent forming pairs. The chromosomes in the pair which determines sex can be X or Y. If a child has one of each, it is a male; if it has two X, it is a female. Currently, the most attention in DNA genealogy is paid to the chromosomal DNA found in the Y chromosome. This is often abbreviated yDNA. Male children always get the Y chromosome from their fathers, and female children do not have one. The effect of all this is as follows: 1. yDNA is used to trace male-line descent, *only*. No female has a Y chromosome, and so the test is never done on females. Any female in a line breaks the yDNA chain. 2. mtDNA is used to trace female-line descent. It is *almost* the exact mirror image of yDNA, with the exception that it can be used to trace a male's female ancestry (i.e., the most recent person in the line can be male; from there back, females only). In the culture in which the PERKINS surname arose, the name is passed from father to children and given up by daughters at marriage. There is therefore a great deal of interest among surname-oriented genealogists in the yDNA tests and little interest in the mtDNA. However, there is no other reason why mtDNA should not get equal billing. In fact, female-only lines are more reliably accurate due to the nature of biology and human behavior; it is just that the documentation, until recently, has been much worse -- and there is that surname thing. We can expect a LOT of developments in this field in the very near future. Darrell Darrell A. Have you done the DNA study? It would be interesting because your names are some of mine and one of my John Perkins' brothers of uncles went to NC area in the 1700's. Jackie-Perkins-Horton
I am not tying in to any lines right now. When I get back beyond 1800 it might be different. I am a female and do not have a male to help with the DNA. Thank you.
