PerkinsGroup Time: 3:18 P.M. Hi! Betty, All, LOL!!! Betty what a FACT!!!!! Thank You! for sharing. To good to pass up, I also must share. : ) Later Fran : ) --------------------- Forwarded message: From: baird01@sprynet.com To: litfreedom@aol.com Date: 97-06-21 14:54:45 EDT Hi Fran...thought that I would share this with the Baird genealogist. I found it while searching in Cass county Texas. Betty Dear ----, I have spent several years looking for family information and have, as of this week, decided that I am a descendent of the family branch called UNKNOWNS. I find kazillions with the names of my branches but my branches don't seem to attach to any trees in the known world. Therefore, I have concluded that there are three ways in which the UNKNOWNS originated: 1. We were sent to the colonies by the British government in the 1700's to spy. We so excelled in the art of blending in with the flora and fauna that no one knew we were here...even the British lost contact with us. 2. We were dropped off here by one of the space ships that some think visited our planet. Again, we were outstanding in the ability to blend in and so were never noticed. Somewhere down the line someone forgot to tell us that we are from another planet. I think the space ships some people report seeing and being captured by, are our true family and they are looking for us to take us home. 3. Immaculate conception...which explains itself. 4. I really don't exist. I am but a figment of someone's imagination but I don't know who that someone is. I am very frustrated as you can tell. Do you have a section in this area for us UNKNOWNs to apply to families for adoption so that we can attach our tiny branch buds and belong to some tree...any tree? Written by: Mary Ann Bartlett YOU KNOW YOU'RE AN ADDICTED GENEALOGIST ...when you brake for libraries. ...if you get locked in a library overnight and you never even notice. ...when you hyperventilate at the sight of an old cemetery. ...if you'd rather browse in a cemetery than a shopping mall. ...when you think every home should have a microfilm reader. ...if you'd rather read census schedules than a good book. ...when you know every town clerk in your state by name. ...if town clerks lock the dorrs when they see you coming. ...when you're more interested in what happened in 1697 than 1997. ...if you store your clothes uder the bed and your closet is carefully stacked with notebooks and journals. ...when Stewart, Taylor, and Rose are hosehold names, but you can't remember what you call your dog. ...if you can pinpoint Harrietsham, Hawkhurst, and Kent on a map of England, but can't locate Topeka, Kansas. ...when all your correspondence begins, "Dear Cousin," ...if you've traced every one of your ancestral lines back to Adam and Eve, have it all fully documented, and still don't want to quit. author unknown ------------------------------

I received your query via "rootsweb" regarding the Perkins family in VA in late 1700s. My Perkins ancestor, Robert Samuel Greene Perkins, according to the 1850 census of Yazoo Co., MS, was born in VA, and was 45 years old (b. 1805). He was killed and robbed at New Iberia, LA in 1862, while on a business trip. He was a lawyer, judge, and member of the MS Legislature, but I have been unsucessful in finding any record for him prior to his coming to Yazoo Co. With his multiple name, I am hoping that someone will find some clues for me to follow. He had a son named Charles. I have my records posted on a home page: http://www.geocities.com/BourbonStreet/4687 with an alphabetic search feature. RSG Perkins and his descendants can be found in the "Pepper" file. Thank you for mentioning the newsletter. And yes, we do indeed accept any material for the newsletter pertaining to the name PERKINS for free inclusion. You may either mail it or post it here, but please do include your snail mail address. Paula Perkins Mortensen, dba COMPU-CHART ------------------------------
I posted my line, and heard from Paula Mortensen, a name many may be familiar with. She descends from the immigrant John & Judith (Gater) Perkins. The question pertained to John(2) and Elizabeth Eveleth, and the source of her last name. No one has located a primary source document that verifies Elizabeth's maiden name. This note should clarify that, and point out that though we all try to get primary sources, it's not possible in all cases. Much we gather is from be secondary source. Technically, anything you get from another without a cited primary source, or a copy of it, is secondary. When it comes to proving, it's having the citation of the source to know it exists, or having a copy of it. I have copies of wills, but to tell you information from it without citing the book and page number, and location of the probate record it came from, is secondary sourced information. Eveleth comes from an LDS ancestral file. LDS files and IGI records are "very" secondary, and sometimes heresay. Elizabeth's maiden name has also been said to possibly be "Weatley" or "Wheatley". It's unproven either way with a primary source. Most people's software program allows one to make extensive notations about sources. I suggest to everyone, this, though time consuming, is invaluable. Six months later, someone will inquire where the date, or the name, ect was obtained, and you won't remember. Always qualify what's unproven. I think I just did. Happy hunting! Steve Perkins ------------------------------
Steve: I agree that there are many problems in the Ancestral File(by the way, I have the whole Family Search in my home as a field tester). However, if you go to the source persons that are listed you can usually communicate with them. If the address is not a good one, if you will write to that person, and leave the letter unaddressed but with their name on it, the Church will send it on to them so they have the option to return an answer to you. If there are family members that are living, the church will try to get a contact that they can forward it to if you ask them to in a letter that you enclose. In the IGI however the source is listed and you can check the original film with the document listed on the film. I have submitted a lot to the LDS church. The last update on the AF listed my last address and I called too late to have it changed. However people are still reaching me. They are trying hard to clean up the Ancestral File. If you see problems on it, it is up to you to sit down at a computer and make the changes at yourr local LDS Library. I don't know how many problems I have seen on it but I am seeing a lot of corrections and they are noted on the AF. They tell who changed and when the record was changed. It was the old records particularly that were entered on AF by volunteers that were the culprits. Now everyone has to submit on disk. So there are still problems if someone puts in the wrong material. Just thought I would put in my 2 cents worth. I agree I don't trust anyones records but my own. IF I get someone elses I use it as a guideline to check, unless they have good documentation.
