Karla: You wrote asking me more details about Israel PERKINS, and why I believe I have a candidate for his origin. Here's my answer. I'm sending it to the PERKINS-L@rootsweb.com list as well, for two reasons; somebody else might be interested, and somebody might notice errors! I think it a good chance that the person I have in my database as "Israel PERKINS Jr.," or more likely a possible son or grandson, might very well be your "Israel Perkins of Hampden Co, West Springfield, Mass 1830s-60s." Israel Jr. was born in 1757 in Enfield, Conn., and so would have been 73 in 1830 (and an improbable 103 in 1860). Since there was an Israel Junior, why not an Israel III? As long as you understand I have no SOURCE to support that. Enfield is less than 20 miles from Springfield, Mass. According to Allen's "History of Enfield," the town was very bad for agriculture, and a poor community. For example, in 1715 Thomas PERKINS tried to settle "The Swamp," but "was so much annoyed by the wild beasts" that he quit. I doubt we are discussing the depredations of squirrels and raccoons here. . . . Also, of Israel PERKINS Sr. and his 11 siblings, 1 died an infant, 1 died a child, and of the remaining 9 only 1 or possibly 2 are known to have died in Enfield. Of Israel PERKINS Jr. and his 8 siblings, *none* are known to have died in Enfield. Emigration from Enfield was constant, and at least one Israel PERKINS "removed to Massachusetts," although this was almost certainly Israel, Sr., and he probably returned to Enfield as in later life he was under the care of the town. I would suggest that he took his family out of Enfield, and returned for his final years. Good luck, and I hope the remainder of this message proves useful. Darrell A. Martin formerly of Springfield, Vermont currently in exile in Addison, Illinois darrellm@sprynet.com ----- This is best viewed using a monospaced font like Courier, with an on-screen line length of at least 55 characters ----- ========================== Research on Israel PERKINS -------------------------- Enfield, Suffield, and Woodstock, Mass. "seceded" and joined Conn. some time in 1750-1753. I will refer to this town simply as "Enfield." Do not confuse it with the later Enfield, Mass. which was one of the towns drowned by the Quabbin Reservoir. Almost all of what follows is taken from my analysis of all the PERKINS references I could find in "The History of Enfield, Connecticut," a three-volume combination of town history and vital records "compiled from all the public records of the town known to exist" by Francis Olcott Allen, published in 1900. I worked from the photoreprint in Chicago's Newberry Library. I have not seen the original records, nor do I know what, if any of them, still exist. This will be posted to duplicate lists, so please pardon the repeat: I need to contact the NY State Catholic Archdiocese to try and obtain whatever records I may be able to get on an Irish Catholic ancestor who was there in an unknown county in the late 1840's. I am hoping that someone on these lists may either live in NY and be able to get an address to me or belong to the NY listserve and post this query for me. Many thanks! I have been getting on line several times per day for the last month. I read every message and I wish to thank everyone who have submitted their tree here. I have too many (29,000) names to submit at this time. I may try individual trees later as the situation warrants. A little about myself: In the year 1637 Thomas Bradbury and Mary Perkins (daughter of John Perkins and Judith Gater) decided to marry. My father descended from William Bradbury, the 7th child of this union. My mother is a Perkins and she descended from Jacob Perkins (7th child of John Perkins and Judith Gater. My father, George Wiles Andre Bradbury and my mother Lillian Gertrude Perkins married in 1932 in Monroe, Maine. I am thankful to everyone between 1637 and now for my chance to be here. About eight years ago I decided to take on the task of recording all of the Perkins's and Bradbury's I could find. I didn't realise just what a job this would be. I now have almost 30,000 names in my database and no end in sight. If anyone wishes to have me look up a name, feel free to ask. I wish to thank personally Paula Perkins Mortensen, Editor of the Perkins Family Newsletter out of California. She has done the most to get me really interested in this very interesting business of geneology. Thanks again, to everyone. Albion John Bradbury Winter Haven, Florida

Karla Mattila inquired about an "Israel PERKINS" in West Springfield, MA in the early-mid 1800's: Karla: As a possibility, I have an Israel PERKINS b. 16 Oct 1727 Enfield MA/CT, d. abt 1793 Enfield. He had a son Israel, Jr., b. 24 Sep 1757 also in Enfield. This town "seceded" from MA in the mid-1700's and joined CT, with one or more other towns. It is only 10-15 miles from Springfield, MA, on the east side of the Connecticut River. I don't have any further records of Israel, Jr., as my interest was in a sibling; the younger Israel apparently left Enfield before marrying or dying. If you are looking for an Israel PERKINS to be in W. Springfield in the 1860's, he is an unlikely (but just barely possible) candidate; but a nephew, for example, could easily have been named after him. If this looks interesting, I'll put together more info on the family of Israel, Sr. Darrell Darrell A. Martin formerly of Springfield, Vermont currently in exile in Addison, Illinois darrellm@sprynet.com
Abraham Perkins was born in Hilmorton Parish, England in 1603. (Hillmorton Parish Records) His father was Isaac, and mother Alice. Isaac, Jr. was half bro. to Abraham, as the first Alice died, and Isaac married another Alice. Last names are unknown, marriages are not in the Hillmorton Parish records. He married Mary Wyeth, d/o Humphrey and Susan (Pakeman) Wyeth, ca 1638. Their children were probably born in Hampton, NH, and that is probably where they were married. John Perkins, Sr. of Ipswich, MA was born 23 December 1583 in Hillmorton Parish. His parents were Henry Perkins and Elizabeth Sawbridge. (Hillmorton Parish Records.) Henry f/o John and Isaac f/o Abraham and Isaac were brothers. Thus making Abraham and Isaac cousins to John. Then the line goes Thomas and Alice (Kebble) Perkins, Henry Perkins, Thomas and Alys/Alice (possibly de Astley) Perkins, William Perkins, Thomas Perkins, William and Margaret (Collee) Perkins, John Perkins, Henry Perkins, Peter Morley alias Perkins and Agnes (Taylor). John Perkins, Jr. did have a son Abraham, but not the Abraham of Hampton. I have more, but too much to post here. I am currently putting together a book on six of the early Perkins colonists, and Abraham is one of them, so I have done considerable research on these New England lines. Paula

His wife DANKS< Prudence lived near the Perkins and named her son Israel Perkins Cummings, so we think this is a clue. Maybe it is a cousin or sister of hers that is married to him, but you know the census has no maiden names for women at that time. Any way, if you do run across more information on the Israel line decendency I would love to see it. Mange Takks Karla Halsan Mattila >

More on Abraham Perkins of Ipswich, MA, USA: Prepared by my father, Robert C. Perkins. Name: Abraham Perkins DOB: disputed. Either 1603 or 1611 (Anyone in England know for sure?) POB: ?, England DOD: 1683 POD: Hampton, NH, USA (only it wasn't USA then) Spouse: Mary Wise (see my post of earlier today) Marriage Date: ? Around 1635 Marriage Place: Most likely Ipswich, possibly Charlestown Or even maybe England Children: Luke David Emigration: to MA in 1630s Abraham, Isaac, and John Perkins came to MA as adults. Residences: Abraham and Isaac moved to Hampton, NH about 1640 and took adjacent lots near the edge of town. Many of the Perkins' of Maine (ME) and New Hampshire (NH) are descendants of the offspring of these two men. Married 1st Elizabeth Brown, (2 children). Second wife was Martha Howard, who bore several more children (number unknown). This David Perkins was a blacksmith and was associated with the iron works both in Saugus, MA and in Plymouth County, MA. I think this David (From whom we are descended) moved from the Beverly area to Plimpton, MA. 11. Abigail. Born 1655. Married ? 12. Timothy 2. Born 1657. Married ? 13. Sarah. Born 1659. Married ? 14. Humphrey 2. Born 1661. Married Martha Moulton, 11/16/1668, daughter of Lt. John Moulton. These children are listed and named in this order in the "Ancient Bible" that was Abraham Perkins' and which Bible is mentioned in the Genealogies of Southeastern Mass. See notes with Mary Wise for additional details about Abraham. Abraham's sons all figured favorably in the annals of Hampton and other towns in the area. Re: Abraham's age: The Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire (Libby, et al.) Says on page 541 that Abraham was 60 years old in 1663. That makes his birth in 1603 and not 1611 as stated in other sources. The latter date is the one calculated from the statement that he was 72 years old when he died in 1683. For this and other reasons, I believe that Abraham was born in 1603 and was 80 years old when he died. Abraham is the immigrant ancestor of our direct Perkins line although John appears in the ancestral lineage of my Grandmother, Clara E. Wilson, wife of Robert C. Perkins I. You will find this John Perkins in the Cummings line described by me elsewhere. Abraham's activities were not all of a civic nature in Hampton as he was also involved in trade as a partner in a "Water Mill" (probably a Grist Mill used to grind grain into flour) with a man, listed as a relative, named Henry Green. Also Abraham was a Clerk of the Market and had a license to " Still and sell liquor by the quart" See Genealogies of Southeastern Mass for further details on this family. See also microfilm #64165 of the 1892 "History of Ufton Court" by A. Mary Sharp. This microfilm is in the Library of Congress Genealogical Section in Washington, D.C. In the appendix of this document is mention of both Abraham and his son(?) Luke, born here, and of Abraham's brother Isaac, born in England in 1613. This information is on P. 258 of this document. There is more information about earlier people. The microfilm can be purchased from the Library of Congress. Current price unknown. Pope's Pioneers of Maine and New Hampshire, 1908, in Boston says that Abraham is the son of a John, the son of John Sr. No source is given and this is probably speculation. Maybe the problem lies in the similarity of names between the families. More Perkins' are described in Libby's et al Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire. Needless to say, he'd like to hear from anyone who can fill in the blanks.
