    1. Peter PERKINS - most interesting Perkins
    2. Judging from the names in your Query (Warren and Crittendon in addition to the given name Peter), my suspicion is that you are speaking of a descendant of Peter Perkins of Henry County, Virginia - definately among the most interested Perkins. Peter Perkins descended from the Nicholas Perkins family of Henrico Co VA. He and his brothers, Nicholas and Constant, moved to the area of Virginia that is now Henry County about 1760/65 - then Pittsylvania County. Peter became a militia officer and county justice. During the Revolutionary War, his unit was called out to support General Green during the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. The battle ended in a draw with both sides claiming victory. The Americans withdrew as planned while a little farther north, the beginning of a trap was being set. As suspected, the British left Guilford and headed for the York River in Virginia where they expected to be reinforced and re-equipped. As you know, this was where they lost their largest Army of the Revolution and the war. After the Battle of Guilford Courthouse, Peter Perkins had the wounded transported to his house in Henry County. When space ran out there, they were transported to the homes of his brothers, Nicholas and Constant, and to that of a neighbor, William Harrison. Here the Perkins and their neighbors cared for the sick and wounded until they were able to leave. The home of Peter Perkins, "Berry Hill," is still standing in the hills of Henry County, VA. Peter Perkins also began an iron manufacturing business in Stokes County, North Carolina, across the border from his Virginia home. The old Moratock Furnace that he built is still standing beside the Dan River, a few miles from Danbury, the county seat of Stokes County. Peter Perkins, or his son, also Peter, may have moved to Stokes County. Good hunting . . . if this is your family, you will be pleased to learn about them. Joyce Browning Fairfax County, Virginia

    3. Will try this again, I understand the first time this post was garbled. Want proof John and Samuel PERKINS are indeed the father & grandfather of Joseph PERKINS. Joseph and Mary Pauline USSERY PERKINS had 3 daughters and 13 sons. JOHN PERKINS married MARY ANTHONY 21 February 1764 in Louisa Co., VA. Mary may have been the daughter of Luke Anthony. They had one known child, SAMUEL PERKINS, b. ca. 1764, VA; d. 27 September 1839, Madison Co., KY. SAMUEL PERKINS married his first wife, JEAN JOHNSON in Louisa Co., VA. Samuel was a Revolutionary War Soldier. He was married twice, second wife unknown. JEAN JOHNSON was the daughter of Richard Johnson of Virginia. Samuel and Jean Johnson PERKINS son, JOSEPH PERKINS, b. 27 November 1784, Virginia; d. 14 February 1847, Attala Co., MS. JOSEPH PERKINS (SAMUEL2, JOHN1) was born 27 November 1784 in Virginia, and died 14 February 1847 in Attala Co., MS. He married MARY PAULINE USSERY 12 July 1812 in Pulaski, Giles Co., TN, daughter of PETER USSERY and AMELIA JARVIS. Joseph was in the war of 1812 and served under Col. Lowry & Capt. Looney. Joseph was a Private, West TN Infantry. By 1821 he was among the first tax payers in the present day Lowndes County. In 1821 he paid taxes for one white poll and five slaves in the amount of $5.25. On August 22, 1825 Joseph bought 79.98 acres of land in the W1/2 of the NW 1/4 of Section 34, Township 17 South, Range 17 West. By 1827 he owned 160 acres of land in the same township and range. The land records in Lowndes County reveal Joseph was planning to move to Oktibbeha County on November 2, 1835 when he sold some of his land to William Kidd. He had completed his move by June 21, 1836 when he sold the remainder of his land to William Kidd. The deed of 1835 had Joseph's residence as Lowndes County and the deed of 1836 had his residence as Oktibbeha County. It appears three of his sons, Alfred 'Alf', Thomas and John moved to Oktibbeha County with Joseph in 1835 and his son William moved there in 1836. In 1837, Joseph Perkins built a horse operated grist mill a mile and a half east of Sessums stands, which served the immediate neighborhood. About 1838 Joseph established the first tanning yard in the county. It was not far from the grist mill. The Askew Crossing road passes north and south through the old site, and the right of way of the Mobile and Ohio Railroad.., Starkville branch, runs through the northern end of it. It was here Perkins bored a deep well, the first artesian well in Oktibbeha County. (Usry Bul #68 page 6). As a trade center, Agency, MS, (now abandoned) rivaled, perhaps exceeded Starkville in the middle 50's. It did not equal the county seat in number of stores, but surpassed it in value of trade. Some of the store keepers were JOHN USSERY PERKINS, Dr. J.B. PERKINS, Gordon Alston, Admiral Warren and Perkins and James. The physicians in Beat 5 during the period around 1858 were: C.W. Jordan, Joseph B. Perkins, E. R. Burt, and J.G. Carroll. Perkins was the son of Joseph Perkins, who began his medical practice in 1852 and continued actively in practice; he moved to Starkville in 1892. He died there in 1899. Carroll came from Carrollton, Alabama, in 1857 and practiced at the Choctaw Agency community until 1894 then he moved to Starkville where he died in 1902. While on a business trip to Attala County, MS in 1847 Joseph became ill and was in the first Baptist Hospital, Starkvile, MS where he died. He is buried in Oktibbeha County, MS. MARY PAULINE USSERY: Mary Pauline also referred to as May, and Joseph lived next to her brother, Richard Ussery at the time of the 1820 census. In 1840 they were living in Oktibbeha Co., MS where Joseph ran a tannery. JOSEPH PERKINS and MARY USSERY had 3 daughters and 13 sons. Three of the children died in infancy. Children of JOSEPH PERKINS and MARY USSERY are: 1. WILLIAM DIXON PERKINS, b. Abt. 1813, Giles Co., TN; d. Okitibbeha Co., MS. He married (1) MARY ANN WARD 19 December 1833 in Lowndes Co., MS, daughter of WILLIAM WARD. He married (2) ELIZABAETH TAGGART 22 September 1847 in Lowndes Co., MS. On 7 Jan. 1834, William bought 40.17 acres of land in the SW 1/4 of the SW 1//4 of Section 35, Township 16, Range 17 West. He sold the land two years later and moved to Oktibbeha county where he appeared in the 1850 census. William was one of the founders of the Starkville Baptist Church -July 28, 1839. Children of WILLIAM PERKINS and MARY WARD are: i. WILLIAM5 PERKINS, b. 1836. ii. ELIZABETH PERKINS, b. 1837. iii. FRANKLIN PERKINS, b. 1839. iv. JAMES PERKINS, b. 1842.
