"Green Mountains and Rock Ribs" Stories and pictures arranged by Keith Warren Jennison Durrell Publications Distributed by: The Stephen Greene Press Fessenden Road Brattleboro, Vermont 05301 pages 68-73, "story" 18 A young stranger came up to the store one day and said it looked like it was going to rain. One of the men said, "Nope, won't rain." "Well those thunderheads are sure building up." "Nope, won't rain." "I didn't mean to start an argument, I just said it looks like it's going to rain." One of the men asked, "What's your name?" "Ed Perkins." "Any relation to Jeff Perkins in Enosburg?" "He's my grandfather." "Any relation to George Perkins in Hardwick?" "He's my uncle." "How about Ned Perkins in Newport?" "He's my father." "Maybe it will rain." The above is unedited except for format. I wouldn't vouch for the genealogical information contained therein, though <grin>. Darrell Darrell A. Hi, cousins and others: I am about to post a series of messages, more or less in NEHGS Register format, which together will be the current state of my PERKINS research. I am interested in any additions, documentation, and especially *corrections* that you may have to offer. Not all sources are entered yet. You will note the lack of citations to the standard published PERKINS genealogy, even though it constitutes the major part of my sources for the earliest generations. You will also note, probably not cheerfully, the incredible verbosity of my report format (especially place names). I'm in the process of moving from Ultimate Family Tree to The Master Genealogist, and frankly don't have the energy to do the editing necessary to make things more readable. Dates given as "circa" have some basis. Dates given as "est." are just that, and may be off by as much as 20 years in extreme cases. The place consistently referred to as "Enfield, Hartford County, Connecticut" was part of Massachusetts until the mid-1700's. And now you have six limbs <grin>. Darrell Darrell A. I posted to this list long ago, dropped out, and have returned, still on a mission! I am looking for information on James Perkins and his wife Susan Downs, both supposedly of Rochester, NH. They were probably born around 1799-1800. They had a son, Thomas, b. 1834. Family legend has it that Thomas was a full-blooded Indian, which would mean James and Susan were also. The closest evidence I have found is the death certificate of Thomas' son Charles, stating that Thomas was born in Old Town, Maine, which is the home of the Penobscot Indian nation. However, I have 2 other records saying he was born in Rome, Maine and Lebanon, Maine. Checks with all 3 towns have turned up nothing on Thomas or his parents. I recently received an e-mail from a woman in South Dakota, saying there is a James Perkins in her husband's ancestry, born about 1838 somewhere in Maine, also allegedly an Indian. Don't know if there's any connection, but could be. I'm open to any and all suggestions, and WELCOME and information you might have!! Thanks, Lynda
In answer to the question below, I'm just beginning my search and have very little to go on. Both my parents are deceased. This couple lived in South Hadley or South Hadley Falls, MA until about 1918 at which time they moved to Saratoga Springs, NY. Bertha died about 1922 and George married her sister May Humphrey. (ggdad)William M. Perkins m. Mary A Blanton I have ordered a birth record for my dad hoping this will reveal more detailed information. However, it has been about 3 months. I'm sort of at a stand still! I've also visited my local FHC and ordered census records. Hopefully I'll be able to move forward with this investigation soon. Thought some of you might want to read this first hand accounting originally posted to The Civil War Newsletter *************** A Word from the USS Cole and Those That Go "In Harm's Way!!" I just got an e-mail from a good friend of mine who flys SH-60B's off the USS Hawes. I thought you might like to read it. "It wasn't until a few days ago though, that we started doing something that I feel may be the first thing I've seen in my short Naval career that has truly made a difference. Right now we're supporting the USS COLE and her crew in Aden. When the attack occurred we were a day away. Just by luck we happened to be on our way out of the Gulf and headed towards the Suez and could get here in a relatively short amount of time. I know what you all have seen on CNN, because we have seen it too. I just want you all to know that what you see doesn't even scratch the surface. I'm not going to get into it for obvious reasons. But I will tell you that right now there are 250+ sailors just a few miles away living in hell on Earth. I'm sitting in a nice air conditioned state room, they're sleeping out on the decks at night. You can't even imagine the conditions they're living in, and yet they are still fighting 24 hours a day to save their ship and free the bodies of those still trapped and send them home. As bad as it is, they're doing an incredible job. The very fact that these people are still functioning is beyond my comprehension. Whatever you imagine as the worst, multiply it by ten and you might get there. Today I was tasked to photo rig the ship and surrounding area. It looked so much worse than I had imagined, unbelievable really, with debris and disarray everywhere, the ship listing, the hole in her side. I wish I had the power to relay to you all of what I have seen, but words just won't do it. I do want to tell you the first thing that jumped out at me - the Stars and Stripes flying. I can't tell you how that made me feel...even in this God forsaken hell hole our flag was more beautiful than words can describe. Then I started to notice the mass of activity going on below, scores of people working non-stop in 90 plus degree weather to save this ship. They're doing it with almost no electrical power and they're sleeping (when they can sleep) outside on the decks because they can't stand the smell or the heat or the darkness inside. They only want to eat what we bring them because they're all scared of eating something brought by the local vendors. Even with all that, the USS COLE, and her crew, is sending a message guys, and it's that even acts of cowardice and hate can do nothing to the spirit and pride of the United States. I have never been so proud of what I do, or of the men and women that I serve with as I was today. There are sixteen confirmed dead sailors who put it on the line for all of us, and some of them are still trapped here. Please take a minute to pray for their families and say a word of thanks for their sacrifice - one made so that we can live the lives that we do. All of you that serve with me, thank you. All of you that have loved ones that serve, thank you." Please feel free to pass this on to those you think will appreciate it. V/R ********************* 'nough said. Bill

It doesn't interest me what you do for a living. I want to know what you ache for, and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart's longing. It doesn't interest me how old you are. I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool for love, for your dreams, for the adventure of being alive. It doesn't interest me what planets are squaring your moon. I want to know if you have touched the center of your own sorrow, if you have been opened by life's betrayals or have become shriveled and closed from fear of further pain! I want to know if you can sit with pain, mine or your own, without moving to hide it or fade it or fix it. I want to know if you can be with joy, mine or your own; if you can dance with wildness and let the ecstasy fill you to the tips of your fingers and toes without cautioning us to be careful, be realistic, or to remember the limitations of being human. It doesn't interest me if the the story you're telling me is true. I want to know if you can disappoint another to be true to yourself; if you can bear the accusation of betrayal and not betray your own soul. I want to know if you can be faithful and therefore be trustworthy. I want to know if you can see beauty even when it is not pretty every day, and if can source your life from God's presence. I want to know if you can live with failure, yours and mine, and still stand on the edge of a lake and shout to the silver of the full moon, "Yes!" It doesn't interest me to know where you live or own much money you have. I want to know if you can get up after the night of grief and despair, weary and bruised the bone, and do what needs to be done for the children. It doesn't interest me who you are, how you came to be here. I want to know if you will stand in the center of the fire with me and not shrink back. It doesn't interest me where or what or with whom you have studied. I want to know what sustains you from the inside when all else falls away. I want to know if you can be alone with yourself, and if you truly like the company you keep in the empty moments.
