October 27, 2000 Contact: Guy Lamolinara (202) 707-9217 Interlibrary Loans Delivered Online New Service Tests Feasibility of Using the Internet to Fill Requests The Library of Congress is now filling interlibrary loan requests for small, fragile items by scanning the material and making the images available over the Internet. Under the new service, still in its early stages, the requesting library is alerted that, although the item is noncirculating, it will be available at a specific time as a digital image. These images can be viewed and copied from the Library's interlibrary loan Web site and from the online cataloging record. The service is intended to explore the practicality of scanning, storing and delivering materials as digital images within the time requirements of interlibrary loan clients. In its initial stage, the service will scan titles that are: in the public domain, noncirculating because of physical condition or age, able to be captured in a relatively small digital file, and have a cataloging record on the Web in which to place a link. The motto of the service is "Copy Once, Access Always." Items scanned so far include eyewitness accounts from the Civil War, a small volume of African American dialect poems and photographs, and a farcical account of a marriage ceremony at a racetrack. These and other examples of items requested by interlibrary loan clients can be seen at: www.loc.gov/rr/loan/digitaldocs.html. In the past, small items that were too fragile to circulate on interlibrary loan had to be photocopied. If the item was requested again, the same procedure had to be repeated. By scanning this material and linking the images to the cataloging record, the Library responds to the initial interlibrary loan request, helps to conserve the original item by eliminating the need for further photocopying and makes the digital copy widely accessible. In preparation for digital delivery, each item is reviewed and treated by conservation staff as necessary, then scanned and archived as a 300 ppi TIFF image by staff from the Library's Information Technology Services. The archived images are then converted to PDF format and stored as single-item files on a publicly accessible server. PDF was chosen as the format because of its ease of access and the ability to download and print the entire work as one file. A link to the PDF file is also added to the catalog record on the Web, substituting a mouse click for a loan request in the future and increasing the accessibility of the Library's collections to remote users everywhere. The new service began in earnest in mid-October with the delivery of a Revolutionary War broadside, a 19th century pamphlet on the Hawaiian reciprocity treaty, and an item on freemasonry -- all with deadlines. As it matures, the service's administrators will be evaluating the acceptability of digital images in lieu of photocopies and exploring how to integrate a digital scanning operation into routine document delivery services. Small items in the public domain currently make up less than 1 percent of items requested from the Library of Congress, or approximately 350 items per year at the current level of use. My Benjamin Perkins stayed in the same locality for over 40 years, in Lawrence Co. Arkansas. Was there before 1820 thru 1862 when he died there. He was born in 1784-6 in N.C. He and wife Jane Ferguson Perkins raised 8 children in Lawrence Co. Ark. His children are John C.W. Perkins m. Martha McCarroll & had family Frances Perkins m. James A. Howdy All, I am seeking help in locating a line of CROSS' who are attached to my "Lunney, Perkins, Dorchester and Van Schaick lines." Leonard A. Cross married Nellie E. Lunney in Hemlock, (Saginaw County), Michigan in 1901. He was a photographer from Midland County, Michigan . In 1909 they had a daughter GERTRUDE, who was named after Nellie's sister Gertrude (Lunney) Wendt." By 1910 the family had relocated to Seattle, Washington, probably following the lumber boom with the A.J. West Mill or something like that. They resided at "331 E. 57th Street, Seattle 99." The 1910 census indicated Leonard was a carpenter there. By 1920 I have traced them to Pomona (Los Angeles County), California, where I lost their trail once again. The 1920 census indicates they lived on Reservoir Street in Pomona, CA. Has anyone ever heard of this family or can anyone offer me any advice on where I might be able to pick up their trail again? Is there a marriage or death index for California? Can anyone from the Pomona, California area point me in the direction of any historical records or perhaps a "pioneer cemetery?" Hi All I began to answer some of the notes you sent my way after I posted "my Thanksgiving message/thoughts", but I stopped after a dozen or so as the first day there were over 100. All together I would guess that there were over 300 and even today I got about 25 more. It became necessary that if I was to say anything it would have to be to you collectively. So here it is....... I am so very glad that what I posted was just an echo of your sentiments and thoughts. It was very enjoyable to read what you all were doing or were going to do with your families. Seems like we all had plenty to eat and did so in the midst of family and friends. I even got a few of your favorite family recipies that I will have to give a try. Happy Thanksgiving All, Logs have been on the fire all week, we had 1.5-2" wet snow last Sunday. Down to 20 the last two mornings (here in the sunny South-NC) Hope everyone is doing well and their Turkey is in the oven (no comment). Ours just hit the heat and is larger than usual as our house is (as has been the case since I married Robin some 17 yrs ago) the meeting/eating place. Her parents, bro and sis with families--and my oldest son and family and my two other sons, Robin and myself, and lest we forget Molly-our four legged dau. Makes for a great though cozy get together. My parents live the winter in Fla and summers in Upstate NY (Gen T. RUGGLES haunts) my brothers are one in NJ-in civilization and the other on top of a mountain in Warner, NH. Besides Turkey with STUFFING, there are mashed potatoes with Perkins' gravy, butterbeans, collard greens, pork roast (the favorite of her grandfather SNIPES who passed away a year ago) cornbread, biscuits, PECAN pie, choclate chess pie, carrot cake, and all the other little things for the table. I miss my mom's Apple pie (I just do not like minced meat but everyone said hers was the best) and my grandmother Perkins cold baked navy beans. I have tried to duplicate their works but they never turned out the same. Maybe it was not the recipie but the company and the cooks that made the difference. I miss all those who I can no longer spend time with and the things that we used to do. I remember the good times and the not so good. I can still hear their voices and see their faces, I hope they were able to do all that they wanted to do in their lives.
