I have printed 4 books, this the Perkins, being my 5 th. , it doesn't look like FTM does this very well, I STILL WANT A HARD COPY, >> I make and print out all sorts of "books" with Family Tree Maker. You can tailor the book option any way you wish. I made some small "booketts" (my name for them) when my daughter, granddaughter, Rachel and I visited New England - I included just the information on the ancestors who had lived there. I used the Book option with the Title "Rachel's New England Ancestors" and included a Descendancy Chart for each New England ancestors surname beginning with John Perkins who arrived in 1630 and ending with the most recent one still living there which was Rev. George Kames Perkins, born in 1808. I included a separate chapter for the Littlefields. I also included the notes for each ancestor and addded an introduction and an index. It turned out great and was just the right length to read in the car as we were driving from Manchest, NH to Ogunquit, Maine, etc. I find the book option very flexible. I also use the Outline Descendancy Charts in Family Tree Maker when I am going to a library and don't want to take along a lot of data. I just print out the descendancy chart for the surname, beginning with the earliest up to the latest ancestor I'm researching plus the notes and an perhaps an ancestral chart and I find I have a very useful tool to refer to while I'm at the library. I did this one summer when I visited Virginia and later New England and I could separate the data that way so I could take just what I needed to each library. Next week I am starting a course on FTM at a local community college which will be taught by a local professional genealogist. If you will send me your questions, I will ask her and post the answers. 1. [PERKINS] PERKINS BROS. Store Chain, TX
    2. Hi all, Who were the Perkins Brothers? I am still looking for the brothers who owned, or any information about a chain of stores called "Perkin's Brothers Dry Goods" in TX. The name may have varied a bit as the years went by: "Perkin's Brothers", "Perkin's", "Perkin's Bros. Company" and "Perkin's Bros. Department Store". Kindly, a gentleman in Hunt County, TX sent me a list of related newspaper headlines. From those there appear to have been stores in Dallas, Greenville, Corpus Christi, Lone Oak, and I know there was one in Sulper Springs because my Grandmother and Grandfather worked in that one around 1910. There were also mentions of locations in "several cities". I suspect the stores began sometime in the latter 1800's. It appears the Greenville store was open into the 70's. Why? Minnie Ann PERKINS b. May 9, 1854 was my Great Great Grandmother, and she was a sibling of the Perkins Brothers. (I've been calling them the mystery brothers lately.) Little is known to me of Minnie Ann's whereabouts. What I d o know follows: On June 27, 1869 Minnie Ann Perkins m. George B. PEOPLES b. (?) d. October 3, 1874. It seems he was shot by an unknown person. I believe they may have had three or four children at the time. One was my Great Grandmother, Georgia PEOPLES who married Frank Byrdlow CASSIDY. They had seven children, the first being my Grandfather, Eugene Herbert CASSIDY b. 1889 in Windom, TX. (Later the family lived in Denison, TX) Back to Minnie Ann: On September 24, 1879 (somewhere in TX) she married Andrew GAMBILL. Sometime much later he died and a caption appeared in an unidentified paper: "Minnie Ann GAMBILL is hale, hearty and may marry again." Of course my hope is by identifying who the Perkins Brothers were, they might lead me to the other siblings, parents and location of Minnie Ann. (Then and now) Would appreciate hearing from anyone familiar with this line or these stores. Happy to share any info I have with other researchers. 2. Good Morning Doc G. (just can not be serious this early in the am, been up since 5) I have no PERKINS in this country/colonies at the time of Kings Mtn but I know that the PERKINS list is doing a project on Rev War PERKINS veterans, one for Loyalists and one for them others. My RUGGLES were probably all in New England at the time of that conflict and Gen Timothy, his three sons, and one Nephew were probably the only Loyalists. should you come across any mention of either surname in your readings, I would like very much to know the source of that information. I would like to pass on the info to the respective list. I do enjoy your postings and have learned a great deal from reading you. 3. I have been using Family Tree Maker since version 1 and now up to 8. I bought Generations Grand Suite 8 last year becuase it is supposed to be better at charting. I never could get used to the interface. I keep going back to family tree maker. I much perfer the data entry interface of FTM. It is easy for me to use and navigate. I have found the Family Finder search on the internet to be very very useful. I have found other researchers that were researching the same line I was researching this way. I believe any of the top software will work fine for you. Find one you like and stick with it. Also make sure it is being fully supported. I usually dont upgrade every time a new version comes out, But I do upgrade about every other year. 2. I , being new at computer genealogy, bought FTM , nothing else was available at the local stores. I have used FTM for about 3 months now and have most of my Perkins put in and have had no problems with the learning of, it has lots of bell and buttons. Having said that, I have one problem with FTM, when I looked at the book publishing it didn't seem to be very flexible. I have printed 4 books, this the Perkins, being my 5 th. , it doesn't look like FTM does this very well, I STILL WANT A HARD COPY, [ for those that don't have a computer]. Is there a program out there that does this? Maybe when I look at FTM closer and do a sample printing maybe it will be all right. Ha Ha , While I am at it, Is there a program out there that will burn to a CD, a Genealogy book that is self extracting ? [for those that have a computer] FTM is good for what it does, I like haveing all these notes, pictures, and names in one place, easy to use and easy to share with others on line. I just want more. bDott Perkins

    1. Re: [PERKINS] Re: Genealogy Programs
    2. Darrell A. Martin
    3. Hi, all: Here's my three cents worth. Inflation, you know. These are all programs I own and use regularly. Ultimate Family Tree (UFT) - an excellent program, all the bells and whistles, has now been abandoned by its publisher. You can still get it, often really cheaply, and there is a mailing list for support which has been pretty good, but keep in mind it will not be debugged or upgraded any further. The reports are extraordinary. The learning curve is steep. It is a 16-bit program. The Master Genealogist (TMG) - I just switched from UFT to TMG. TMG has an extraordinary, active, and responsive support mailing list on RootsWeb; the developer of the program participates from time to time. Like UFT, it has all the bells and whistles, but that also means a steep learning curve. Reports are very good, but not always as "pretty" as some other programs; but once you get to know TMG it can jump through flaming hoops. A new "add-on", Visual Chart Form, with which I am not familiar, promises to provide new possibilities in wall charting. Documentation of sources and research management are the best around; only UFT comes close. The program is showing some age, at version 4.0c, which is a 16-bit program; I think the interface is somewhat clunky looking, but to paraphrase Forrest Gump, "Pretty is as pretty does." Version 5 is scheduled for release "any time now" and is a 32-bit program. *THIS IS MY MAIN PROGRAM AS OF THE FIRST WEEK OF JANUARY 2001* Personal Ancestral File (PAF) - The program put out by the Mormons, whose contributions to genealogy are the stuff of legend. (No religious requirements to use it.) PAF is a free download, and for the price <grin> extremely capable. There are some problems with the newly released version 5, according to online comments I've read, but I haven't had any trouble with it, including a successful import of a monster quarter-million-individual GEDCOM. Maybe the bugs have already been fixed anyway, there are a lot of good programmers in Utah <big grin>. The reports, documentation of sources, and research management are adequate or better; the onscreen displays are better than either UFT or TMG, in my opinion, and navigation is excellent. Family Origins (FO) - Relatively inexpensive, published by the same people as those who put out Family Tree Maker; meaning it probably doesn't get anywhere near the marketing effort it deserves. An excellent choice for someone who wants a balance between just printing a family tree (it does much more than that), and running a genealogical business or publishing a well-documented book (TMG would be a better choice). It has roughly the same strengths and weaknesses as PAF, I think. Lastly, in my opinion, it makes absolutely no difference what "free CDs" come with the program. You will find almost all that stuff on line anyway. The ability to organize and output your own information are what counts, and I think TMG, PAF, or FO would all be good choices. TMG for the gung-ho, PAF for the budget-conscious, FO for a balance of ease of use and capabilities. Darrell Darrell A.
